Rooney to the Chelsea will happen IMO. I think G. Neville's comments on this situation are spot on though, in that if we do sell to Chelsea, we will have a major player lined up. So if he does go to the Chavs, then I wouldn't be too worried and would expect a player of high caliber coming in to fill the void.

RVP had a year to go on his contract and was refusing to sign a new deal whereas Rooney still has two years on his contract, I think we will be in a similar situation with Rooney next year and just like Arsenal we will be forced to sell Rooney to the club of his choice.

Aye - but next year is next year, and not now. The question is whether Rooney will pull himself together and do a decent job for us. If the answer is yes - then I'm fine with that. If he still wants to move to Chelsea next summer, so be it. Moyes will have other options by then, other targets in sight - the whole situation will be different.

I have a feeling United had been planning to replace Rooney since last year. Unfortunately a number of rich boys are now in the market for top talents, and we just cannot compete in terms of transfer fees, salary and probably lifestyle.

I just don't understand how. Do you think there was truth in the old Falcao rumours? It just doesn't make any sense. We were never likely to win a battle for a player like that, plus Fergie had known for months he was retiring.

Theoretically, Kagawa is a Rooney replacement, but sadly, his first season didn't go according to plan. That said, I don't believe it's a like for like replacement because Kagawa can only play as a number 10 and not a number 9.

Agree with your earlier point about Ronaldo not letting his standards drop, btw.

I can't think who that replacement would be though. There's barely any class forwards left on the market.

I think we were nearing a deal for Lewandowski, until Bayern turned his head, Amir.

I'm no lawyer but I negotiate the terms of legislation governing entertainment contract law in a highly litigious state. If one party, either an athlete or a musician or actor, to a lawful contract refuses to perform pursuant to the terms of the contract he or she is in breach of that contract and liable for damages.

I have to assume it's not that different in the UK.

If Roo refuses to play or obviously tanks it when he does play he's got much bigger problems than mere monetary damages to United.

We hold all the cards, but we have to keep a stiff cock.

Man, you are a funny guy.

He's not much of a replacement either. A top player, of course, but you can't play him and RVP together. That's the issue with Rooney. It takes a very special kind of player to replace him. Not just a striker, as good as he might be.

We have a class forward and as we only play with one up top, I think we are ok in that department. What we would need to replace him would be an attacking player that can assist, score, link up etc. Whether that is on the wing, attacking midfield or up front doesn't matter IMO.

I don't think we need a striker. RvP, Hernandez and Welbeck will suffice. We need a player who will score 10/15 goals and provide similar number of assists. A player of the calibre of Mata would be perfect.

We should go for Lamela, he's brilliant and would be able to play right, left and in the centre as just behind RvP.

One thing in our favour is Chelsea are yet to submit an offer worthy of a player of Rooney's stature. I'd be angry and confused about that...despite the fact you don't open with your best offer. But starting at £20m for Rooney is laughable.

But you can't underestimate his value. The numbers suggest we have been a much better team with Rooney, and I imagine for the forseeable future we'll see that. It's going to be a massive task to change our whole style of play, because he's has been a key part for such a long time.

I don't care what anyone thinks about money not being the issue, Chelsea have to overpay to sign a top player from a title rival. £20m is miles off. £30m is cold. With English tax he should command a fee too a title rival of at least £50m. Wages are not our problem. Agents fees are not our problem. You have to pay big for big names and so far, Chelsea aren't showing a genuine desire to sign a player who is still regarded highly as a footballer at Manchester United.

Maybe United had planned RvP playing the Rooney role?

They paid £50m for Torres. If they think he is worth it, they will offer near enough the same amount. Why would you be 'angry and confused' what another club is offering for Rooney?

I don't think he has the mobility, at least not the one Rooney had. As if our midfield situation isn't bad enough, playing a withdrawn striker without the right physical attributes would be a problem.

I don't think RVP would struggle with the mobility, I think he's more comfortable going around the pitch than Rooney currently is but I don't think we signed him with the view to take Rooney's number 10 role, it's something he might step back in to as he gets older but right now he's the best number 9 in the league and I think he was bought for that reason.

I thought the context of angry and confused would make sense to anyone who read/heard it coming from Rooney. Obviously not.

I'm not angry or confused. However, in a tongue in cheek sort of way I meant perhaps Wayne should be considering how serious Chelsea's interest is because its been a while now and they haven't made an offer close to being good enough; especially if he's frustrated that United are rejecting offers.

I have full confidence in a strike trio of RvP, Chicharito and Welbeck.

If we sell Rooney to Chelsea, we must have a dogs bollocks midfielder signing for us first.

Yeah I don't think Rooney has to be necessarily be replaced by someone like for like, but a player of top quality would need to come in, in either attack or midfield. Ideally before anything with Rooney gets finalized.

The less Chelsea pay United, the more they pay the bald ogre. He will be delighted at the low bids. He will try to force his way out if he wants to go.

still say a fired up committed rooney is better than anything we can sign. He's proved it time and time again. I for one wish he would just knuckle down, stay and be a part of this new era.

If Rooney believes in himself so much that he doesn't have to "prove" himself (as he's allegedly said), he must surely understand along with Chelsea that a fairly average rate of £20-30m is miles off?

He's no mathematician, but he can't be that stupid?

In some ways, I take that as a reason as to why he's not saying anything. Him and his corrupt team must know that United aren't going to sell unless it suits them, especially if they don't have the fortitude to submit a transfer request.

What about taking some of Chelsea's younger players as part of the deal? De Bruyne, Ake and Chalobah all look like talented lads.

any transfer request will happen a few days before the window shuts...agents play these games. It forces the hand of the player and capitulates the penalties for doing so, but in the long run the benefits outweight the losses in the end.....just so typical of today's financial game.

Good post, been saying this all along as he is our best player- but now after he broke his silence with that sly dig suggests to me that perhaps he does want out or alternatively the club want him out.

I'm starting to doubt all this hamstring and shoulder injury talk now I think this was all a smokescreen to prevent the public stand off like what is happening with Suarez.

Personally like the majority of utd fans I want this sorted quickly so we can focus on what is a very tough start in the league.

yeah I think he wants out now...which is why I believe he will put in a transfer request in the last week of the window. He's an idiot if he does. Sure he might go to Chelsea and win the league..but it will never ever fell the same as when he did it with united. A one off win like that never has the same feeling or sense of achievement as it does when you have been with a club and group of players for a long time and become part of the history. Chelsea fans will never warm to him the way we did.

I am sick of him and his attitude. Quite happy to sell him as long as it is on our terms. Meaning, abroad.

How many youth players have they brought through recently? I'm not saying we've been prolific in that area recently either but I don't want any of their cast-offs.

We can't sell him to Chelsea but if the worst happens, we better make them bust the bank. None of that part exchange shite or installments. Huge amounts of cash up front.

You're making the mistake of projecting what you think, on how Rooney thinks. Rooney is an Everton fan and probably see's Chelsea in the same way as he see's United. Just another big club. He is not going feel any different whether he wins trophies at United or Chelsea.

I'm just sick and tired of reading posts that would have us bend over and let Rooney place his shaft inside us.

Would you be more sick if he led Chelsea to the title?

Either way we will probably get shafted.

If we can't sell him abroad, personally think we should just have him train and play with the reserves all season. Hell i'd be happy for the club to let him run down his final two season whilst in the reserves.

Michael Owen on Rooney in the DT today: "Wayne wants to play all the time. We all love football but he's on a different level. - - - - I dont think he can bear the thought of not being the main man and not playing all the time. He wants to be loved, the first name on the team sheet."

That's the crux of it all really and it all started when he was dropped for the Real Madrid game. He didn't stop to think WHY he had been dropped, he immediately phoned Coleen and she tweeted her disgust even before we kicked off. He's been seething ever since and Jose M has stirred it up further since getting the Chelsea job.

In fact I wouldn't put it past Jose M deliberately unsettling an opponent's player and having no real intention of signing him. Hence the ridiculously low offer.

Will the Glazers be happy to take the hit though? Between £50M and £70M in transfer fees and wages.

It makes sense as a supporter who cannot bear the idea of seeing a very valuable asset wear a Chelsea shirt, possibly score against us, and win a trophy we are gunning for. If he started to pull any Suarez-type shit about being "lied to" or anything, then I'd love to see him sit out 2 seasons and be released on a free lacking 2 years worth of match fitness, but from a business point of view, I can't see our management ever doing that, considering what he's supposedly worth and what he gets paid.

Rooney himself accepted Van Persie was our talisman last season so this idea that he has to be the main man seems a bit off. He was subbed off in Moscow when Ronaldo was at his peak too and I didn't hear much moaning after we won the 2008 Champions League.

This is not about being the main man its about money. Had Rooney performed half as well last season as he did the season before we wouldn't be having this discussion. The real issue, as that article from the Indy said, is that Rooney wants to be treated specially but isn't willing to work for it. On the one hand Rooney's got Chelski willing to give him a massive five year deal taking him into his 30s and on the other he's got us saying prove you've got the work ethic and we'll talk about it. He's taking the easy way out and spinning like a wheel on an F1 car to make out he's the victim.
