In an explosive new interview, Wayne Rooney has claimed that Manchester United promised to let him leave the club if Liverpool did not qualify for the Champions League last season. Rooney's comments come after Luis Suarez similarly claimed that Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said he could leave the club if they finished outside the top four in the Premier League last season.
"Between now and the last time I demanded a transfer, I have given absolutely everything to Manchester United," Rooney told the Weekly Reader, the student newspaper at his 4-year-old son Kai's school. "Last season, the club told me that if Liverpool didn't finish in the top four, I could leave. They said David Moyes would honor the agreement. And then Liverpool finished seventh — they didn't even qualify for the Europa League — while we won the title. I just want Man United to keep their word."
Rooney made his second transfer request in three years near the end of last season and, like Luis Suarez, has been reportedly been considering a written demand to push through a move before the transfer window closes at the end of the month. Also like Suarez and Tottenham's Gareth Bale, Rooney has pulled out of his club's preseason schedule by claiming to have picked up an injury.
"My contract also has a clause that says if Jose Mourinho repeats my name three times in front of a camera, I can play for him," Rooney said. "I'm not doing this to hurt Man United. It's not like I'm asking for a move to a local rival. London is like 200 miles away. It's only fair. I have the backing of the PFA, NBA and QVC. I know exactly how Luis Suarez feels. Except for the cannibal stuff."
When asked for comment, Man United manager David Moyes said, "This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. There were no promises made. I will be taking strong and decisive action against his head."

not sure if this is totally made up....

:( We're doomed. Rooney the bestest player the humanity has ever seen will demolish us and score at-least 200 goals in process for Chelsea next season. I think that there isn't a reason to even participate in the competition, it's all over.

And to people who think that if Chelsea signs a top striker (Rooney) they will dominate the league for years, answer me how the hell they managed to win only 3 leagues where they had a better striker than Rooney (Drogba) for 8 seasons and a much better team than now?

Oh, I don't think anyone reckons he'll bag 200. Given his immense fitness issues (I mean, the man can barely drag his near-dead carcass down to the nearest shop to get a pack of fags) he surely won't reach more than 100. Nothing to worry about, all things said and done. Let him go on a free and give Coleen some gas money for the drive down.

:wenger: if anything they are arguably on the same level. Completely different styles of player though.

Anyone buy into Tony Adams' assertion that Rooney wouldn't be able to handle the lifestyle in London?

Returning to the argument that Rooney's departure wouldn't weaken us providing that he is replaced, who could we replace him with at this stage?

The only direct replacement I can think of on the market is the one guy none of us want anywhere near the club: Suarez.

If we were to replace him indirectly then I imagine Bale would be near the top of a wishlist but that is a non-starter now as far as I'm concerned.

Outside of that it seems Fabregas is our top target but that deal is being pursued independently of the Rooney situation. Regardless, it still seems unlikely to go ahead.

When you're talking about a player of Rooney's quality it's not as simple as just throwing the money at someone else to replace him. Unless Mata were to be included as part of the deal I don't see the arrival of a big name to replace Rooney as a likely scenario.

You hardly ever replace like for like to be fair. Losing Rooney and bringing in someone else could just mean us changing how we set up slightly. Beckham - Ronaldo, for example.

The first two title they won they were both under Jose who unified the team but since then Chelsea have had around 8 different managers so they lacked a lot of consistency and stability. Also we were going through a transitional phase during Jose first stint but when our young players came into form ie Ronaldo and Rooney we were just unstoppable for a couple of years.

At the beginning of last season, everyone I know thought Chelsea would have done much better but it seems like they are fixing the cracks at the club and so far all they need is a clinical striker to push them back to the top. I think Rooney is more than capable of clinching 20+ goals for them if given the opportunity especially with Mata, Hazard and Oscar there to supply him. I honestly think selling Rooney to Chelsea is a bad idea as it would strengthen them in the process whilst possibly weaken us.

Yes I don't think we would replace like for like. More likely we would look to strengthen the wings and middle of the park but even so, what top quality attainable players are out there to bring in?

There are a fair few players out there who would strengthen us, especially in the middle. They're probably not what you'd call "top quality" though. Right now someone like Herrera or Belhanda would probably strengthen us...

He'll live in a mansion with his family in a posh and quiet town in Surrey, like almost all our players do. I think Luiz and Mata are the only one who actually live in London.s

Yep, Majority of them live in Oxshott / Cobham / Esher. All very close to the training ground and right next to the m25/A3 into london.

Losers. No wonder we were getting offered Luiz and Mata - they're the only ones who know how to enjoy themselves.

Rooney in charge of the reserves? Did he get his coaching badges yet?

I found the "asked" more humourous, I can just imagine:

"Erm... Hey Wayne... i just wanted to... Erm... Ask... If you wouldn't mind... If it isn't to much trouble... Erm... Training with the reserves...Erm... Just for now?"

If it's goal.com the lazy feckers probably edited the Suarez/Rodgers story.

Just imagine one of the less clued up reserves pointing to Giggsy and asking: "Who's that, Wayne?"

To which he replies, "They say... he is a legend."

Surely no one actually believed he was injured?

Neville said: "Manchester United cannot sell Wayne Rooney to Chelsea Football Club - unless they bring in a major, major signing like Gareth Bale or Cristiano Ronaldo.
"You have absolute gold in Rooney, someone who is proven over six, seven, eight years; who delivers season in, season out; and is one of the top goals and assists man in the league consistently - even last season when he wasn't at his strongest.
"He will work his backside off and never drop his level in training and the importance of Rooney [is huge]; he is a vital player, a champion player and someone that wins you the league.
"He is the guy who in the middle of October when you are four points behind in the league, going to Chelsea and have Arsenal the week after, sits in front of his midfield two, works his backside off, gets up the pitch, gets back, sets up goals and digs in.
"Don't underestimate the value of Rooney to Manchester United's success over the last eight years and the way he is liked amongst his team-mates.
"Manchester United do not need to sell him for the money and I don't think they will sell him at all - and if they do, not until they bring in a decent replacement."

sky sports

I don't think he was no, but it's a dumb smokescreen to emply when he's never going to pull out of the England squad for a game against Scotland only a few days after our Community Shield game. Although you never know, he might play on Sunday.

Wayne Rooney has trained away from the first-team and with the reserves at Manchester United.
The England striker is determined to leave the club for a move to Premier League rivals Chelsea.
Rooney was the only senior player working with the reserves at the club's Carrington training ground, in a session taken by United coaches Warren Joyce and Nicky Butt.
After the session, he said he requested to join the reserves session at Carrington, rather than play with the first-team.

Once again, apparently its Rooney driving a wedge between himself and United rather than the other way around. His 'camp' probably saw what had happened with Suarez and decided they would stage something similar.

Not really, it was a pretty daft thing to say all round.

To say nothing of the fact that Manchester is a bustling city itself and that the paparazzi will find him anywhere, this isn't some fresh faced rookie b8t a player with nigh a decade in the limelight.

He'd be swapping his present mansion for one near Cobham or wherever.

The Mirror several days from now:

Way-ving goodbye? Roo give Utd mates the cold shoulder; eats England meals with Terry and Cole.

Not only that its not the Utd way. We are at our best with our backs to the wall when no one gives us a chance, When Chelsea then City were bought, that was it, we are done, When Jose came back, we are done, when Juve were 2-0 up inside 20 minutes.......we were done, 3-0 down at spurs......we were done, 89th minute of the CL final......we were done. RvN leaves, where will the goals come from? Keane retires, OMG what will happen!?! WTF, fergie sold Hughes Ince AND Kanchelskis and bought no one!! The end is nigh! People need to man the feck up.

FFS. The difference here is we are selling a marquee player to a rival in the same league. Still got a good few years left in him and strengthening Chelsea in a position which they are weak in. And face it world class strikers win you games and title (just need to look at the difference RvP made for us last year).

I'm not being defeatist and obviously my point is exaggerated a little, but the point remains it would be shooting yourself in the foot big time by selling Rooney to Chelsea.

Gary either can't differentiate between the player he knew at the club and the one he has now become and wishes to be in the future, or his England duties prevent him him from doing so in his mind.

Rooney, who is unlikely to feature in Sunday's Community Shield with Wigan, continues to agitate for a move to Chelsea with a formal transfer request likely this week.

The match against Scotland could be his first appearance of the season.

Speaking about his selection and his involvement against Scotland, Hodgson said: 'It would be foolish of me to say how long he might play.

'When we meet up with him we will need to take a judgement call on that. Our conditioning people might have to help us. The last thing I want to do is play him for too long and risk an injury.

'It is good he is going to be there and available to us. We will wait to see how many minutes he is going to play.'

It is often remarked upon that Hodgson has the style of a diplomat, yet he could have been kinder to Moyes with those quotes. Injury or no i think people will wonder at Rooney being so prominent in Roy's thinking for this friendly.

So? Life is boring when its too easy. Where's your sense of adventure?

The number of United players in the England squad, he is not doing anything for England harmony either.
