Wayne Rooney | 2012-14 Performances

I'd like for us to try him as a strike partner with Van Persie. 2 out and out strikers. Unfortunately, with our shocking midfield selections he has to drop back and cover.

But no team plays with 2 out and out strikers, it's just not feasible with everyone else playing usually 5 midfielders and narrow. Maybe against the weaker teams you could get away with it, but strong midfield or not every team has someone operating in the hole.

People who say "we're a worse team without him" are stating the blindingly obvious. Rooney is a magnificent player and we would naturally look less effective without him in the team.

Although as some have said, yesterday was not his best game by any margin.

It's not always true of all great players though, sometimes they leave or are left out and the team looks the better for it.

Looked poor for the majority of Saturdays game, but he was far from the only one. Overall this season Ive been enjoying his performances from deep.

Yep typical Rooney performance coming back into the team. Hopefully he gets up to speed Wednesday and kicks on as we need him firing against City.

Even on his off days he produces a few ridiculous pieces of skill to play someone in or set up a chance.

Oh ya, he's leading the league in assists.

Rooney can literally play anywhere and do well. There really isn't any player out there quite like him.

The horrible yellow cards, the petulance, the off pitch bullshit and the tabloid stories all seem to gone.

His head is at a good place now.

I feel if the midfield has some drive and energy and can get the ball to RVP and Rooney, there is no reason why United can't challenge for Europe or the League.

Agreed, this is shaping up to be the second season in a row where his football is the number one talking point, he seems to have finally grown up and long may it continue.

Nice way of putting it. He came on at half time vs Tottenham and gave an assist there. Can't just not mention the sub appearances when talking about stats. They're ambiguous enough as it is so you have to mention all of it.

7 (2) games, 2 goals and 6 assists.
Also as 1 goal and 2 assists as well in the CL.

I think the pass to Scholes where Scholsey should have volleyed it and the one in the second half to RVP where pieces of genius and I would also say he tracked back many times to cover others failing to keep the ball. Overall I thought he was ok sure he gave the ball away but thats what happens when your trying to be creative against a team just sitting and defending. Also he was shifted into three or four different roles yesterday I don't think many players could have done that.

So spot on.The RVP pass was nice but the Scholes one was just amazing in terms of quickness and creativity. It was brilliant

reminds me of the almost exact pass in 06/07 to Ole I think, except that one turned into a goal. beautiful.

When Rooney is average, it can be quite frustrating. His touch is sloppy and is overall play is just a tad off pace. In the setup we have today, he needs to be quicker.

The thing with Wayne is often it takes him too long to return to form after a lay-off. When you consider his unfortunate record with injuries, that's an awful lot of time when our supposedly "world-class" striker is off the boil.

When he's on his game, he's a joy to behold, though.

Feck me, he's been half-arsed in everything he's done tonight.

He is supposed to be playing deeper than the other forwards and get on the ball, his execution has just been poor tonight. Still think that is his best role as his passing is usually excellent, but we always have Kagawa as an option and could move Rooney up top.

^^ It's almost like some of you are happy he does badly to come and prove a point here

His sharpness always goes when he misses games. As long as he regains it quickly, he'll be just fine.

True and that's why it was so surprising he started playing well immediately on his return from injury 2 months back.

Was poor tonight, his touch and passing was non existent.

I would like to see Kagawa play in his role, when fit, and see if he can do any better.

I'm not happy to see him play badly but it happens frequently enough that I feel like a point needs to be made about some of the more positive comments about him.

His shit is better than most others good though. Not at his best tonight but what a player.

Could be as simple as him needing a rest. He came back from his injury in better form then usual, and maybe now we are seeing the side effects of that burst he had.

If he's going to rest him he's going to have to do it soon as Christmas is just around the corner.
