We're in a strong position here, and we should rebuff all advances from Chelsea. Think about it:

- He has two years left on his deal. Once that's run, he'll be nearly 30. The football world moves on quickly, and by that point, he won't be as attractive a player to potential buyers.
- With his conditioning issues, there's a very real chance that he'll have passed his best by the time his contract has finished.
- It's a World Cup year - if he's still here come the close of the Transfer Window, he's going to have to buckle down and find some form.

If we are to sell to Chelsea, we need to make sure we get silly money, and I'm talking around the £50m mark.

I agree. Hell I'd even keep him until he puts in a transfer request, no way we should be paying this cnut any kind of loyalty or sell on clause - I'd keep him just due to this, let him rot in the reserves and miss out on a World Cup in what should be his prime years. We got all the cards on our hand.

It's in his court now, we've told him and his suiters he aren't being sold (likely waiting for him to put in a request or a really good offer which gives us enough money to not care about any clauses).

Yep. Chelsea's need to buy is greater than our need to sell. What's more, Rooney doesn't hold any aces against us because he's got a full two years left on his deal and he's nearly 28 - this isn't like his last transfer request, if we dig in, we can ruin his peak years. If we sell him, it should be for a king's ransom. Otherwise, he should be marginalised - he wouldn't be a dressing room virus if he was treated like Malouda at Chelsea, i.e. completely disowned. Given that it's a World Cup year, I'd be willing to bet a hearty sum that he'd come back with his tail between his legs.

Taking the piss? You listen to the tabloids a bit too much. He's said pretty much nothing all summer and yet the tabloids just come up more and more tails that our fans lap up more than even opposition fans.

Then why doesn't he just come out and squash it if he wants to stay here and there's nothing to the stories? The longer he stays silent the worse he makes it. All he has do is make a statement saying he doesn't want to leave, he wants to sign a new contract and all the stories are fabrications of the media.

I'm not convinced. There will be a backlash from our support, without doubt. It's the sort of thing you don't really need when becoming the manager of a new team.
You could hear YSB when he went to pick up his medal, If people were pissed at him then just imagine what the reception will be like next month. He could have turned it around with the supporters by releasing a statement but I think that opportunity has gone.

Apparently, Napoli have had a 37m euros (plus 3 in add ons) bid for Higuain accepted - this puts into even greater focus how poor Chelsea's original bid for Rooney was. Based on that, I think we should be asking for £50m for Rooney.

I have only one question. The Times say Rooney is close to moving to Chelsea for £200k p/w. I read the article and it sheds no light on whatever the feck that's supposed to mean. How close can a player be close to moving when the club who own him say he's not for sale?

If I try to look at things through Moyes' eyes, I would say that we want a major signing in before selling Rooney.

Moyes won't come across well if he sells Rooney to an arch rival and then doesn't sign anybody of real talent for himself.

Agreed. And I'm starting to have a bad feeling about this transfer window, our targets, if the media are correct, do not seem viable (Cesc wants to stay at Barca for example). So I can see stalemate and Rooney having to stay till January at least. Having said that, I live in hope that United are using Cesc as a smokescreen while putting together something great in secrecy.

It also takes as a given that the team mates remaining at Old Trafford will simply repeat the output as last year.

Good point. If he does go, or stays and sulks, it's a safe bet other people will step up. Could be the break Kagawa needs and a pair of hungry young strikers will be eager to prove themselves.

I feel pessimistic about the transfer window but not about the season coming. Though I will say, as I have the before, that if Rooney does end up at Chelsea, I think he'll be ace for them. Mourinho will get him back to his best. That is quite scary. But bring it on if that is the way it has to go, we'll step up like we (almost) always do.

It's acknowledging the amount of pressure we're under to sell him and a prediction that we'll cave in to it, I guess. I know what you mean, I read it (I've actually read remarkably little about it, I've generally tried to put the whole thing out of my mind as much as possible), the headline made me think it was imminent but by the end I felt the stalemate mentioned above was quite likely too.

Doesn't the same paper always say that he's on some 220-250k a week at United? So he's taking a wage cut to join Chelsea? I don't see that happening.

Provided the same paper is right about what he earns for us, that is.

It would be an interesting scenario, though, wouldn't it? Rooney takes 50K a week pay cut to play for Chelsea. That might be read in all sorts of ways, I'd say. Probably bollocks, though, or mostly bollocks. His salary has been reported as high as 300K and as "low" as 180K as far as I know.

I suppose that they could compensate for an apparent drop in salary with a lucrative signing-on fee and maybe a different arrangement regarding his image rights?

Some papers i know have even suggested that Wayne is on 300k although i reckon that is 60-80k north of the reality, and as such Chelsea will at least match that figure.

A cautionary note about the importance of it being a World Cup year, do bear in mind that England are still more than capable of nipping that one in the bud by the end of the Autumn. :nervous:

Assuming that to be the case you have to bear in mind Arsenal's interest in Higuain, i'm sure if we had two genuinely interested buyers the sale of Rooney could also be worked to profit the club further. As it is however, Moyes & Woodward are stuck with what they can squeeze out of Chelsea or keeping the player.

ETA: And that's 500 pages ladies and gentlemen.

Reading back the vast majority of fans reasons for wanting him gone are not football (on the pitch) related? Wouldn't it be in our best interests to keep him? How many players of his quality out there 15-20? We need to replace his quality BEFORE selling.

Consider, RVP is viewed as the superior No 9, Kagawa has IMO the potential to be a more technically proficient No 10, therefore unless Rooney is content to play in an advanced left sided position this crossroads has been on the horizon since last summer.

You need to factory in wages when comparing transfer fees like this.

If Higuain is on £130,000 per week on a four year contract then that's £27million over the course of the contract.

Rooney's demands will be closer to £250,000, but even assuming its less at around £230,000 per week then that's almost £50million over four years.

We all know the £20million bid was a joke, but a £30million bid by Chelsea at those rates would cost them £80million compared with Higuain costing Napoli £57million, which is a huge difference.

You also need to factor in the resale value of the player and their worth as an asset, at nearly 28 Rooney is only going to deteriorate whereas Higuain's value could still rise.

You also have to factor in which player is more marketable and which player will earn his respective club more ££

first of all, i agree that the £20 million offer is a joke. if rooney has a brain he should feel insulted by the amount offered rather than felt unappreciated by united for not offering him a new contract yet. i mean to be valued as much as stewart downing or jordan henderson, by a club said to be very interested in you.....enough said.
selling rooney to a premier league club, chelsea or city especially, is a bad move for us. unless we sign ronaldo again, and add up someone like bale and cesc into the team, which is very much unlikely, then only we would not be affected at all.
rooney should be at least in that £35-40 million bracket imo. he still has 2 years left in his contract, he has more than 200 club goals over the last 11 seasons and potentially his country's all time top scorer in a few years time. even arsenal managed to get £24 million from us for van persie, who was 29 last summer with just a year left in his contract. and he only became a prolific goalscorer for the last 2 or 3 seasons and before that he was very injury prone.
i can see this ends up with rooney banging in the goals and has 15 by november and then we offer him a new contract.

Chelsea confident Wayne Rooney will NEVER wear Manchester United shirt again

It will be a £30million move but won't happen in time for Chelsea's visit to Old Trafford on August 26 PLUS Mourinho backs Lukaku

By Martin Lipton
22 July 2013

Chelsea believe it is a only matter of time before Wayne Rooney is their player.

But the Blues are resigned to not landing Rooney in time for him to return to Old Trafford in a Blues shirt on August 26.

The Stamford Bridge club will table a second bid of £24million this week and feel they can get their man for around the £30m mark – despite Manchester United’s insistence the England man is not for sale.

Jose Mourinho has made Rooney his prime target, with the Chelsea board confident the Scouse ace will not wear a United shirt again.

If the Reds are successful in their ongoing quest to land Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona, Chelsea expect United will be able to ‘sell’ his arrival as an ‘upgrade’ to justify the departure of Rooney to SW6.

But United boss David Moyes will not want his first home game as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor to be overshadowed by Rooney’s return to Manchester.

And while Chelsea feel the champions have no option but to sell before the transfer window shuts on September 2, they are willing to have to wait until the final days to get their man.

Blues boss Mourinho stuck to his strict “no comment” policy on Rooney after last night’s 4-1 win over Malaysia in the Shah Alam Stadium on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur.

And the Special One, relieved that his worst fears over Belgium schemer Kevin De Bruyne’s knee injury were not realised, suggested Romelu Lukaku can start the season rather than Fernando Torres.

Lukaku, who returned to Chelsea after scoring 17 goals on loan at West Brom, made it two in two pre-season matches, but more importantly terrified the Malaysians with his pace and power.

He also set up De Bruyne’s stunner and Mourinho said: “Lukaku had a fantastic manager last season. It’s up to the kid, but he’s open and intelligent to learn the kind of movement we want.

“Of course he can challenge Torres. The role he played was the right movement. We don’t want the striker just aiming between the central defenders, but making movements, sometimes between midfield or moving wide.”

Asked if he saw resemblances with a younger Didier Drogba, Mourinho said: “We have to respect them both. The best way to do that is not compare Lukaku to a legend. Leave Didier where he is, at the top of Chelsea’s history, and leave Lukaku to work hard. The kid is good.”

Another “good kid” is 17-year-old trialist Bertrand Traore, who scored the opener from De Bruyne’s pull-back, with Victor Moses also netting late-on.

The Burkina Faso youngster is still on a student visa but Chelsea fear he will not get a work permit when he turns 18 in September.

“Those are the rules in England, and we have to accept them,” said Mourinho. “We’ll try to get the permit for him when he becomes 18. If it’s not possible we have to let him go on loan somewhere. Sooner or later the committee has to give him a permit to play here.”

On De Bruyne, finally promised a chance after spending 18 months on loan at Genk and Werder Bremen, Mourinho said: “When he was on the floor, everyone on the bench thought the worst.”

De Bruyne will be assessed today. The Belgian tweeted: “Knee and ankle feeling OK. Always stay positive. Waiting for tomorrow. Then we will know more.”

Transfer season really does lower your opinion of football reporters, which wasn't exactly soaring to begin with.

They just need someone who will score a lot of goals right now, Higuain can do that.

Your as good as your last game, when we signed Van Persie he was the best striker in the league (still is), what Rooney has done over 11 years only forms as a nice story. Right now is what matters when buying a player.

True, of course. But we aren't obliged to sell Rooney at market price. We can bleed them dry if we so please.

i reckon he still can get 30 and win the league for his team next season. or he can get injured and out for 3 weeks every 2 months. anything is possible with rooney. we can't take any chance with that.

Consider, RVP is viewed as the superior No 9, Kagawa has IMO the potential to be a more technically proficient No 10, therefore unless Rooney is content to play in an advanced left sided position this crossroads has been on the horizon since last summer.

I think SAF intended to give Kagawa a more pivotal role this season, meaning playing him wherever he is best - and let others move around, as it were. And I think Moyes is on the same page. The question still remains where he is best, though - for us, I mean. I'd like to see him as an AM in a three to begin with. If he really thrives in that role, it would dramatically improve our infamous midfield situation: To put it in extreme terms, if Kagawa excels as an AM, we don't necessarily need a world class CM signing. Carrick plus a competent man to complete the trio might do the trick. And we might even have that competent man in Cleverley, who could well take further steps this season (well, there's no reason to think he won't). A back-up signing and a "competition" (for Cleverley) signing might be all we need.

Well, sorry for the digression - but the point is that Kagawa could be a revelation for us this season, making Rooney less important. Kagawa could also excel in a more traditional No10 role (with a couple of wingers flanking him) and even as part of a more fluent three up front.

Still, we don't know how it will pan out. Selling Rooney and banking on Kagawa becoming a true marvel is risky - though I personally have all sorts of faith in him coming (very) good.

I think it's very unlikely that Rooney's current basic is over 220k/week. I'd guess around 180k (for many reasons), but I suppose nobody knows for sure.

Anyway, I've vocally wanted him sold since his last contract shenanigans. However, I'm not sure that's the right thing any more. I certainly don't want to sell him to Chelsea/City without him putting in a transfer request. I don't really want him to move to Chelsea/City if he does put in a transfer request. Anything less than £35m would be a waste of time - I'd rather keep him for two years, get some goals out of him, and let his career go downhill elsewhere meaning less danger to us.

I know what you mean, but 40million + 2 years wages (20mill), can get you decent talent of the Bale variety.

I agree, what I was trying to get at is listing he career achievements have no bearing on how good he is right now.

I agree I think he will do well in all honesty and have no problem with us getting the best price/deal possible.

Just been reading about his agent, Stretford.

Allegedly 'stole' Rooney from another agent, which led to him making £1.5m from Rooney's transfer to Manchester United.

He is given a 20% cut of all Rooney's income that isn't from United.

Has been banned and fined significantly for his dodgy contracts and antics in linking up with footballers.

A fishy dealing with the Proactive company who thought they as a company represented Rooney with Stretford part of that firm but it was misleading and never that way.

The guy is a crook and whilst he's the agent of one of the better players of recent times, he's guided a naive teenager into a naive adult and manufactured a great payout in 2010 and looking for it again this year whether its a contract or a transfer.

I'm convinced Rooney is a naive dopey idiot rather than a scummy mercenary. That's why I don't mind these foreign players who have parents as representatives along with agents. Asking your father if you should move to Chelsea is likely to be a deeper conversation than "I'll find out what we can pocket from this".

Not defending Rooney, he's a grown man now...but I certainly maintain the belief that Stretford has misguided him (from our point of view) but done a cracking job from a dodgy agent's point of view.

As a journalist wrote yesterday 'All this smacks of Rooney's agent seeking one last big payday'; I've seen precious little so far to suggest that the journalist is mistaken.

Even throwing around speculations if true means that he might get some payday from United etc or something. Leading the club and Wayne to believe that he/they hold all the power when brokering.

As of the 20th of July last year the Independent by way of the Forbes rich list reported the following:

37. WAYNE ROONEY

Total earnings: £15.6 million
Salary/winnings: £11.3 million
Endorsements: £4.1 million

His earnings then work out at £217,000 a week, but that's before you take out win bonus money. His basic will be a good bit less than that.

Certainly not the ridiculous £300,000 figure often quoted. His total earnings work out at exactly £300,000. Hardly surprising to see the press mislead with players wages.

It has to be around 200k/pw. Speculatively, anywhere up to 20% of that 11.3m is bonuses one would have to ball-park assume..

Ironic, or perhaps merely a coincidence, that after Roo complained about our alleged lack of ambition, that Fergie procured two players -- RvP and Kagawa -- who effectively stole his thunder.

Now he wants to leave the club, despite United having coasted to yet another prem title and would otherwise be considered the prohibitive favorite to lift another prem trophy this season but for Roo's spoiled brat mentality.

The only question is how to manage the transfers. Fukkin hell if we can actually bring in Bale and Fabregas...Roo can watch the trophy lift on his flat screen television.

Not knowing the clubs policy on bonuses or any specific clauses in Rooney's contract there is yes a degree of variability there.

The figure quoted does you would think rule out anything above 220,000 a week.

200-210k is possible, so is 10,000 in the other direction of course.

I agree, what I was trying to get at is listing he career achievements have no bearing on how good he is right now.

okay, although history has proven rooney can turn out average for one season, and then suddenly is only behind messi and ronaldo the very next. like i said, anything is possible and we cannot let him go yet.

The one thing I'll always say is these 'quotes' from Rooney come across as fabricated by his advisors.

A couple of weeks ago Moyes said he and Wayne had visited each other's houses and met at Carrington.

The recent angry and confused thing said otherwise. It's a PR disaster from Rooney's camp and because he's signed to these people he can't actually come out and tell us how it is.

And this isn't me defending him, but I genuinely believe he's a bit like Michael Jackson but slightly less nuts, just doesn't know how to handle himself and is reliant on advisors and agents.

But on the flip side, I think the Madrid omission may have triggered something between Rooney and Sir Alex on a more personal level. Since then he hasn't had his ego tickled and with those money grabbing agents of his, they'll be manufacturing anything they can to pocket a few million.
