 Now I'm confused. I thought the signing on fee was what Chelsea would pay him?

Yes as Dracula says sell on fee is what it's called, but I guess it overlaps with a signing on fee seeing as the purchasing club would be paying both fees, the signing on fee directly to the player and the sell on fee indirectly via the selling club.

My understanding has always been that the standard transfer earns the player 10% of the transfer fee, what form that payment takes though I have no idea and it's obviously just a general rule because you can make any contract you want.

I googled 10% of transfer fee and a few things have cropped up, but none of them are authoritative e.g. a FIFA or FA document, but then they wouldn't be because it just seems to be a general rule and not compulsory.

This isn't relevant to the percentage of the fee, which is dependant on any contracts we've made with Rooney. But as has been said in the thread a formal transfer request waives the right to the fees - so that is why Rooney is hesitant to put one in

"Neither United nor Rooney are willing to declare publicly that he will leave. The club wishes to retain his highest transfer price, while Rooney does not wish to concede any bonuses or other monies by making a formal transfer request."

Anyone seeing him doing a U-turn? Like he stays at the club, buckles himself up playing football in our shirt and we offer him a contract in January as a sort of a reward?

No, I see RVP and Kagawa keeping him out of the team. As, I suspect, does he.

feck it. Don't sell and just run out his contract and don't give him any games just to annoy him. He'll be 30 by the time he leaves then and no games in 2 years.

There's nothing in the press briefings from his side to indicate anything like that I don't think - though how much of what is going on is posturing or in some way tactical and exaggerated we don't know. We can't rule it out, but there's no real basis for thinking he'll want to stay, much less anything else.

I think it's more likely that he has had a deal worked out with Chelsea for a long time and he's just working his way out from us. I agree the longer it drags on, the nastier it'll probably get.

But all we can do right now is try to interpret the media briefings and guess what the parties involved are thinking/doing.

I've no idea what will happen at this point. He might be forced to stay regardless of his wishes, though. If he insists on Chelsea that could (it should, in my opinion) happen. And then the whole thing alters character: Once he realizes he's stuck, he can go into civil disobedience mode (which would be incredibly stupid of him), or he can decide to do his job.

Letting him go to Chelsea would be a ludicrous decision - we'd be better off keeping him here and ruining his career. I'd make Chelsea clear favourites for the league if they got him.

I don't really get this argument about selling to rivals. Letting him go to a rival on the cheap is stupid, but then letting him go on the cheap is stupid full stop. If he goes for his actual value, then they get a (say) £40m striker for £40m. If we don't sell him, they go get a different £40m striker for £40m, and the effect on their title chances is largely similar.

Don't get me wrong, from a fan's point of view I want him to go to somebody I'm don't care about either way... either over-seas or the likes of Spurs. If for example he went to City, I'd hate him more than just about any other player!

Agree with FM. Selling to Rooney would be an absolute disaster of epic proportions. Not only would we be severely weakening ourselves, we'd also massively improving our title rivals. It would a mind numbingly stupid decision to sell him to Chelsea or City.

Even if we get 'good money' for him, i.e. £40m, will it have been worth it if he wins them the league? Despite the rush to write Rooney's career off, it's not outlandish to suggest he could have the same sort of impact on Chelsea as RvP did last season for us.

When you look at it in context, £25m from a club abroad is better than £40m from Chelsea. I wouldn't even mind if we flogged him to Arsenal.

All the top top quality strikers are off the market now. Falcao and Cavani aren't available and Lewa will end up at Munich.

Dont think we can simply keep him and then not play him at all.

Yeah but you have to factor in that Rooney isn't as good as you think he is.

He's miles better than what Chelsea currently have and also comfortably better than any other striker they could get this window bar Suarez, doesnt matter how highly wr8 on the caf rates him.

Problem is, what do we do if he comes out and says he has no interest in playing for us and only wants to join Chelsea? What if there is no interest from foreign clubs? We're not going to keep a highly paid, disinterested player on our books.

He's been declining for the last two seasons though. Ideally we wouldn't sell to Chelsea, but I wouldn't be too bothered if we do. I mean, if no foreign club wants him then what are we supposed to do?

How can you not be bothered about Chelsea getting a top striker? Dont you agree that he's much better than what they have? Bar Suarez, do you think they have any chance of getting someone of Rooney's quality this summer? They along with city will be our challengers this season, I'd definitely be bothered about strengthening them. If no foreign club comes in for him, we sell him to arsenal. I dont think he'd want to go but that's another issue.

It'd be pretty ironic if a player who has wanted out for a few months got a £5m+ loyalty bonus for forcing a move to our league rival. I say let's wait until he puts in a transfer request, subsequently giving up on any bonus he may receive, or let him run down his contract.

No doubt. If he wants out he can hand in the request. We obviously shouldn't accommodate him (and his agent, not least) in this matter, given what appears to be the likely buyer here.

I still don't see the need for all this media nonsense, I must say. A transfer request is a formal communication, right? If I want to leave my club but do not want to hand in a transfer request (because I'm a greedy cnut, or because I pretend to be offended by something), then I can communicate this to the club, surely, rather than having the same message leaked via various sources in the media? United know Rooney, they know Stretford - why would they pay attention to whatever image the "camp" are trying to create in the media?

To clarify: I don't understand the logic behind leaking stories and messages to the papers as part of any strategy directed at the club. When everything is pretty much on the table (United know what Rooney wants, whatever it is), using the media is only good for one thing: Communicating with the public (not David Moyes or the Equalizer).

Bah, no matter. I'm fed up with this thing. As others have said, though, we'll probably be stuck with it for a good while yet.

Clearly we'll have a choice to make. Take the hit on his wages and ruin his career, or bank the money and potentially hand the title to a rival. Fact is, if we stick to our guns, Rooney will have to come back into the side eventually.

I don't think he's that stupid. If the club makes it very clear to him there is no chance of a move, he won't come out and say something like that. It would amount to professional suicide (at least a temporary suicide, if such a thing exists). I really think he'd rather shut it and keep playing, and then begin working on a different solution (moving to the continent next summer, say).

I agree, I think it's a poor argument and we should be focusing more on our own club and getting the best deal for ourselves. The stability of the club comes first, both financially and in terms of stable personnell.

Passing on a £40million fee to hold onto Rooney who doesn't want to be here, whilst paying him £10million a year doesn't achieve either of those aims. It's bad business from a financial sense and it will just disrupt the team.

Trying to prevent Chelsea strengthening is a foolish mission anyway, they are obviously going to do it.

Get a big fee from them and move on, we could strengthen our own side with that revenue which is what we should be focused on.

It's a proven tactic - become such a distraction that the club has no choice but to sell you. In the past, players have refused to train to force a move or come out and made intentionally disrespectful statements. Stretford is more than capable of making this very ugly.

I'm sure he is. But that's the game, then. If we don't plan on letting Stretford play us, we just have to be prepared for ugliness. I have to say I find it unlikely that Rooney will be prepared to spend an entire season out of commission, though.

Well, hopefully it won't come to that.

I still don't get why on earth we would let him go on the cheap. A 27 year old proven world class striker ffs! Who cares that his wages are high, this is Chelsea! Either break the British transfer record or no deal (is the way I hope the club is thinking).

Exactly, Ferge never made any claim of the sort.

Should we expect better from the Guardian than the Mirror? Either way we've got the media repeatedly misrepresenting the known facts in a very obvious fashion considering the video record.

Is it the 'journalists' own agenda?
Cosying up to the Rooney camp?
They they're unbelievably dimwitted?
All of the above? lol

Assuming Rooney will fire Chelsea to the title is similar to the current trend of assuming Moyes is out of his depth just because he came from Everton; I never knew we had so many psychics on this board. Of course, Rooney would improve them up-front, but, consider: if the club's management are willing to sell him to such a rival, don't you think they'd have thought everything through, and in a more comprehensive manner than we are doing? Some fans seem very keen on new boy Moyes making a statement; what bigger statement of confidence could there be than selling to a rival? Sure, it'd be a reluctant sale but it'd be ballsy nonetheless...and there are absolutely no guarantees that Wayne will suddenly transform into the fearless world-beater of 2004 again, absolutely none; after all, we're talking about a player whom people are surprised by if he actually gets into shape before pre-season (surely the minimum requirement for a professional footballer?).

If we sell to Chelsea the outrage from certain sections of our support, especially on here, will be as presumptious as it will be predictable & tedious - we simply don't know well Wayne would do at the Bridge. But, if the club is willing to risk such a sale, rest assured that every possible factor has been analysed beforehand; a professional organisation like ours doesn't try to predict the future so much as shape it to their benefit.

It is as if people think he'll be sold to Chelsea and United won't promote people to take up Rooney's responsibilities in the team.

Moreover were Rooney to indeed score 30+ goals in the league next season then his success would likely led to some reduction in the goal tallies of other players.

At United there is room to improve our defensive record don't forget. The two club's respective goal differences are being seomewhat oversimplified by a few IMO.

It's amazing how differently we all view players' performances - one fan's MOTM is another fan's waste of space. Me - and I'm not being bitchy - I can't see how a player who's lost so much will be scoring 30 goals for Chelsea. How on earth is "yeah, but on his day..." Rooney going to turn back the clock & become consistent and deadly Rooney?

What has he lost though Steve?

Is he really that different from the Rooney of 2011/2012 who did score 34 goals for us?

As I mentioned, chiefo, we all view performances differently. I see a Rooney who avoids tackling/injury, who can't or won't regularly beat opponents with skill, who only intermittently builds up pace, who shoots from distance rather than attempt to beat defenders.

All that sounds damning and spiteful but it really isn't: I'm saying that Wayne, for one reason or another (and lack of enthusiasm could be one factor), seeks to coast through games too often these days.

Hurry up and get this deal done please, I want our physio on his hamstring asap!

Why? If a rival has money to spend on a player of a certain quality, they will do. OK, in the current market the prices are all over the place, with Cavanni, Falcao going for £50m, and striker options running out, but as a general point the rivals thing makes no sense. Would there be much difference between them getting Rooney and Lewandowski for example?

To be fair, we should have taken advantage of the French mania, and flogged him to PSG or Monaco for £50m+.
