I agree there, but again 10 million to us is not money we will lose sleep over. I see 35 million as the highest they go so this is directed more to people saying at least 40 million. Do you see Rooney here on September 1st??

If we are selling him to that lot, which as I said before, I think would be stupid, then making them wait until after our game against them would be better.

Rooney could have one leg and he'd still get a game for England.

Indeed, but since when did Mourinho start caring about the England national team?

And how much should we spend on them.

I really hope you're not going to say we should let Rooney go to Chelsea for 25million but then break the bank for Bale or Cesc because, well, that would be retarded.

So we should WAIT to see what we get for Rooney before making any other moves?? That for me would be retarded what if this drags on into August? Wouldn't you like to know we are already able to deal with him leaving. Like I said he doesn't want to be here, and we are not too fond of him either so for me it's time to move on. Moyes has said he has a good amount to spend that is WITHOUT selling Rooney.

How much do you want for Rooney before we sell???

True, if we lose Rooney and sign nobody else at his level we are in a bad position. If we do sign players and lose him we are fine, if we sign players and keep him even better.

Cavani wasn't on 200k at his old club, so there was less pressure on them to sell and they could demand a higher transfer price. Same with Torres, Carroll and a lot of other big transfers. Rooney wants out and having a player on 200k+ rather than 100k is a big difference.

I have argued this point numerous times to no avail.

Torres on £8m per year over 5 years + £50m transfer fee = £90m

Rooney on £12.5m per year over 5 years + £27.5m transfer fee = £90m.

That's the reason we won't get £50m for Rooney. If Chelsea value Rooney as they valued Torres a couple of years ago, they'll offer £27.5m.

Ibrahimovic was at monster wages at Inter and yet they fleeced Barcelona for every single cent. There are plenty of examples. Again, going by your logic, we couldn't have asked for 80m for Ronaldo: he wanted out, he was on huge wages and Real Madrid almost doubled those wages but still paid 80m. Rooney isn't worth 80m, obviously, but 40m? Definitely, at the very least.

On the flip side:

Milan bought Ibrahimovic for £20m, far less than his "value" because of his wages
PSG bought Ibrahimovic for around £17m, far less than his "value" because of his wages
Anzhi signed Eto'o for £18m, far less than his "value" because of his wages.

There is a reason why Rooney will probably leave for a similar fee to Benteke. One costs £10m more per season more in wages.

Good post, you can also add David Villa to the list who left for peanuts. I still think we should look to get between 30 and 40 mil from a domestic rival though.

But from a seller's point of view, why does it matter how much it will eventually cost the buyer? If they buy the player, it's up to them to negotiate new wage with him. Why should we be penalized by them keeping him on the same wage or even higher wage? From our perspective, purely mathematically speaking, the calculation would have to do with how much we get from the sale + how much wage we take off the bill (£25m over 2 years plus whatever price is), versus the perceived relative contribution the player would've otherwise chipped in (on and off the field).

All else equal, if in 2011, Chelsea thinks that Torres is worth paying £94m over 5.5 years (£8m x 5.5 years + £50m), or £17m per year, then Rooney should be worth more, given how he's expected higher wage.

If we do sell Rooney to Chelsea, which I think would be stupid, it would be unlikely to be until the last days of the transfer window imo.

Decent point. We play Chelsea at Old Trafford on 26 August, it'd soften the blow if Rooney weren't lined up against United at Old Trafford so soon.

Mourinho was actually originally asked about how you motivate a squad in a world cup year, that second question was a follow up one.

Rooney would have to shit in the centre-circle at Wembley whilst having two broken legs and a six month suspension not to go to the WC next year. It's a non story because he's so far ahead of any other England forward let alone risking falling behind 2-3 other England forwards in the pecking order.

If United were to sell Rooney, it has to be sold for not less than 60million pounds (valuation of Bale after 1 good season) to rival EPL teams.
United can use the 60Mil to invest in Bale or Ronaldo.
United can also use him as part of the fees in exchange for Fabregas (more likely and favorable). Maybe United can get another 10million pounds + Fabregas.
If no team wants to pay, let him stay and fight for his place in the team. If he doesn't want to and hand in transfer request,
insist he stays and let him rot in the reserves and run out his contract. By then, he will be 29 and without playing 1st team football regularly,
he won't be much of a player like he used to be. But I guessed that the United board will not allowed him to run out of his contract and will sell him even for lesser money.

We're not going to sell to Chelsea but if we did and he scored against us that soon, it would be a bit too shattering.

How does selling Rooney mean we're going to spend that money on some big players like Cesc and Bale? We've seen many times in the recent past that a lot of big players turn us down so yes, I think it's too risky letting Rooney go and most definitely not to Chelsea or City.

Looks like Mourinho smells blood with the new Moyes/Woodward combo and is twisting the knife. He either gets one of United's best players or he sews seeds of division and uncertainty for harvest next season.

I have never seen United air their dirty linen in public like I have over the last couple of weeks.

It's through your blue-tinted glasses. You can also easily say that it's United who's holding the reins right now, and knowing how Chelsea is salivating at the prospect, trying to screw you around as much as we can and possily fleece as much as we can as well. I doubt Mourinho will have much of an impact given how Rooney's head already turned.

I think it'd make more sense to get signings in and letting Chelsea go to deadline day.

Trying very hard to see something that's not there am afraid.

There's only 1 issue out in public at the moment, Rooney and his happiness/desire to stay at the club. It was the same in 2010. Nothing to do with our manager, CEO, or mind games from your manager.

How do you find life on the CAF differs from the Utd facebook page?

He's testing out someone he can consider to be a novice on an extremely difficult issue which he was landed with in his in-tray as soon as he got his feet under his desk.

Erm no, he has bidded for Rooney and has responded to journalists questions on the subject. I really doubt Mourinho is "sewing seeds of division" with any of his comments. Get a grip.

Moyes knew what the script was with Rooney from the day Fergie mentioned it to the press. Don't be naive and think Fergie didn't speak to him before starting the wheels in motion. The funny thing is that Rooney is past it and Chelsea are going to buy him on his rep alone. Same as Torres.

To be fair i'm sure Woodward has the credentials to do the job, he wouldn't have gotten it otherwise.

He's testing Rooney, and United's resolve to keep him/let him go.

I'd say that Mourinho has had an impact on Rooney already. It has been reported in quite a few places that Rooney wants to play for Mourinho - he's the sort of manager that players (Real Madrid aside) want to play for.

Trying to give your manager too much credit am afraid. He's bid for Rooney, same as Wenger. Both have spoken about him when asked by the media. There's no mind games, Sun Tzu'esque tactics in play here.

From where I'm standing, United suddenly don't look like the well-oiled machine that they looked like under Ferguson and Gill. From the naive comments that Moyes has an "unlimited budget" whilst going into transfer negotiations to the briefing of private and probably fabricated negotiations in Sydney, it seems like a different United from the one we've got used to and the way they conduct their affairs.

No more naive than Mourinho saying 'it's Rooney or bust'.

Conclusive proof, then, that many players are idiots; Mourinho would throw them, and the clubs he professes to love, under the bus at the first sign of failure. It's one of many reasons why he didn't get the United job.

It certainly appears he's having second thoughts about leaving United. Still wearing MU kit while dining with Colleen.

To be fair didn't he say 'there's no budget'? Going from Everton where he's told he can only spend £Xm on a player, to here where he's probably been told 'if you want a striker, go and bid for him'. That's all he meant. I don't have a budget for food but that doesn't mean i can spend £1000 a week in Asda.

And to be fair anyone would look weaker or whatever if Fergie and Gill simultaneously stepped down. We'll see how weak we are at the end of August, and at the end of May.

Well, it's bound to be different. How different we'll just have to wait and see. The idea behind employing Moyes was, in part, not to rock the boat too dramatically - and that probably goes for Woodward replacing Gill as well.

How naive Moyes' comment was - and all the rest of it - will perhaps be answered at the end of the window, when we know what has actually come out of this transfer lark.

That's not what you were saying though. You were trying to paint current issues as a result of some cunning mind games from your manager. Not just that, you also said his mind games are long term and designed to cause problems in our camp next season. The truth is very simple though, we've had a change of manager after 27yrs and he was a man who commanded respect, loyalty and fear both within and outside the club. He ran a bloody tight ship. Now that he has gone, things are bound to be different under a new manager. This is why we'l operate more like normal clubs with some news out in the media. It has nothing to do with your manager.

Regarding Moyes, the entire world knows that we're a rich club, add to that the extra funding that all clubs in the PL have now and everyone knows that cash is there at the club. His statement wont be changing anything.

I dont know what you're about with the fabricated bit thing. Woodward flying out of Oz? This is nothing new unless you're started following our affairs this year. We've had instances in the past where Gill was rumored to be in country X or Y for business.

We've had leaks in the past but the only difference is we had Fergie to tell the press to feck Off. Moyes does not have the same luxary because he has to earn it. But we are hardly weaker because of it.

Gill mentored Ed and Moyes was Fergie's choice, that to me says that they're not exactly a couple of mugs. I'm sure, despite the new way of doing things, that stuff i going well behind the scenes. If we get to August 20th without any squad improvements i'll start worrying then.
