Impressive once again. Very good passing, vision and drive. First touch was a little sloppy on times but all in all an 8/10

Top class performance today. Looks very fresh. Maybe the injury and rest did him good.

What a world of difference a powerful, energetic midfielder can make...

It's just too bad that midfielder also happens to be a world class striker.

This should be the most active thread. Thought he was very good indeed.

He is our most important player and why some do not appreciate how vital he is, I just dont get it.

Was fantastic today. I'd love it we played this system more often. Looked very good.

Yep. Looking very good at the tip of a diamond.

Its a shame with internationals coming up. Think him and RVP are just beginning to gel.

He makes everyone good around him

Great game today I think though if we played more a 433 with him at the head of a central 3 than we could get him more advanced more often. When we were firmly on top he was able to play higher but as they put us under pressure he was pushed deeper. In a 3 he could still help out but he coul be the one starting the counters and would be able to get in the box. Tbh though with Valencia back I'd expect him to come back in and it'd make sense for that to be for welbeck, which would facilitate more of a 433.

I thought that's pretty much how he did play.

Its true though. Think back to that Bayern game (Even though we lost) him playing that day alone contributed to our amazing start that night.

Cantona was just like that. Even if he barely got a kick. Just being there mattered.

Ridiculously selfless player. 30 goal a season player and he does this for his team when it needs it.

Fergie's post match interview was interesting. He referred to what we played today as a diamond, but when he was asked about Rooney, he seemed to indicate that ideally he wanted to play him further forward.

It's an interesting test case for how much this formation talk really corresponds to actual distinctions in reality.

How much difference is there between Rooney playing further forward than today - but still in midfield - and Rooney playing his usual position of a number 10 who likes to drop deep a lot (sometimes very deep)?

I thought there was a marked difference today in that we had an extra player in the middle of the park which gives us more control of the game and makes it viable to play Kagawa in a midfield 3. The position itself might not be that different as far as Rooney is concerned, but you can't really look at it in isolation.

Nah it was mostly a diamond until we noted welbeck a bit wider for the last 15 mins or so. Most the game he was either next to or just ahead of carrick. When we were flat out dominating it was great but once the game became more even I though we could have gotten more out of him at the head of the midfield.

Yes but I said the difference between Rooney further forward than today - but still in midfield - which is what Fergie seemed to be suggesting... and Rooney in his usual 4-4-2 position behind the striker.

I don't think there is a difference.

Imo the difference is that what we have seen earlier with Rooney playing number 10 and dropping deep is that when he does there is no one left up top, or at best a lone striker. Today on the other hand he always had Welbeck, RVP and to some extent also Kagawa ahead of him, which meant that he had someone there who could benefit from his playmaking.

Ah right, in that case I agree, there's next to no difference. He often drops back to the same positions he was in today or sticking to the opposition's deepest midfielder in our normal formation anyway. I'd love to see us persevere with the system used today, the first 20 minutes were complete domination.

Rooney was just everywhere today. It was a free role for him with two hard working midfielders in behind and clever attacking players for him to link up with.

His return to form is much needed.
