Through the first half a friend and I we're talking about the lack of drive and passion throughout the team. It seemed apparent to us that despite the signings of RVP and Kagawa, two supremely talented attackers that will challenge Rooney in the first team, Wayne remains this current team's "heart and soul". Thinking back to the West Ham game two seasons ago where he scored a hat trick to bring us back from 2-0 down, the first half team seemed to lack that leader who would drive us to victory. Now while we obviously didn't win, it was tremendously encouraging to see the lift he gave both to the crowd, and to the team. You could almost feel the excitement of "Rooney's return" and "Rooney & RVP" through the television. I'm not saying RVP doesn't have that same ability to be the talisman, he clearly showed that at Arsenal. But as a new arrival I think it's probably unreasonable to expect him to provoke that kind of inspiration in the team, at least at this point. Some may not like it, but to me Rooney remains the leader on the field. If we are to win the title I think we need Rooney at his snarling, scowling best. Without him we almost seemed too meek in attack.
tl;dr - Rooney is still our most important attacker, and we will need his leadership to win trophies this season.
