Wayne Rooney | 2012-14 Performances

Baffling why and how Giggs started over him. Rooney was brilliant when he came on though he really needs to start passing to RvP sometimes.

Still gives the ball away too much, and wasted a glorious chance. We did however play much better when he came on but that's no surprise considering it was for Giggs. Him and RVP need to start together every game now when both fit.

I am the one who often criticize his overall play, but he was very good today.

But still, I cannot forgot those two chances he fecked up, both should have been easy passes to van Persie who would easily score that. It's interesting, when he plays shit, his end product is excellent, but when he is putting good performances he is missing end product. Mind you, I would take Rooney from last two games instead of last year's every day.

Rooney is still not 100%. The reason he was not started. It will take another match or two to get fully match fit.

But we should play Cleverly, Anderson and Powell (not all together necessarily) more often in the PL. Scholes should only be played in the important games.

EDIT: had to mention our misfiring midfield.....

The first 25 minutes when he came on he played like a man possessed. He was everywhere and was a fecking class act... his influence on the game then seemed to dip a bit to the point where he wasn't really in it as much for the last part of the game, which to be fair to him, might still be to do with him getting match fit.

But yeah, if he can get up to match fitness, and continue with performances like today, the proper Wayne Rooney could well be back for us sooner rather then later.

The second half looked like a completely different team and some credit has to be given to Rooney for that. I wish he started also and those missed chances always come back to haunt. He was guilty of not passing a few times and same goes for RVP. I don't know if that was a result of them both wanting to prove something

this injury gave him the rest he needed after a long season and the Euros.

but having RVP and Rooney at the top of their game is not enough. I cannot believe we did not buy a solid tackling midfielder in the summer. Some of the younger lads coming through will need a couple of years to make it.

Was impresive, it has to be said. I think having genuine compatition upfront is doing the trick.

Through the first half a friend and I we're talking about the lack of drive and passion throughout the team. It seemed apparent to us that despite the signings of RVP and Kagawa, two supremely talented attackers that will challenge Rooney in the first team, Wayne remains this current team's "heart and soul". Thinking back to the West Ham game two seasons ago where he scored a hat trick to bring us back from 2-0 down, the first half team seemed to lack that leader who would drive us to victory. Now while we obviously didn't win, it was tremendously encouraging to see the lift he gave both to the crowd, and to the team. You could almost feel the excitement of "Rooney's return" and "Rooney & RVP" through the television. I'm not saying RVP doesn't have that same ability to be the talisman, he clearly showed that at Arsenal. But as a new arrival I think it's probably unreasonable to expect him to provoke that kind of inspiration in the team, at least at this point. Some may not like it, but to me Rooney remains the leader on the field. If we are to win the title I think we need Rooney at his snarling, scowling best. Without him we almost seemed too meek in attack.

tl;dr - Rooney is still our most important attacker, and we will need his leadership to win trophies this season.

I was sure he was gonna score yesterday, definitely looked like that'd be the case for a while.

So that's probably the best he's looked this season. Deeper, getting on it a lot, excellent understanding with Van Persie. What does this mean for our best 11? He's sort of in Kagawa territory this evening. And he looked happy. Can the 2 of them play off RVP?

Can the 2 of them play off RVP?

I'd say it's iffy. I'm sure they've got the ability to do so, it's all about forming the right sort of relationship on the pitch, i.e. not treading on each other's toes, and getting it right in terms of who drops deep, who drifts out to the wing etc.

If you played tonight's team, but with Kagawa in place of Hernandez, and Van Persie playing central, then that could be very interesting indeed.

They sure can, with Kagawa left of course.

Yeah, Kagawa has been quoted as saying he'd like to be central but I think left of a 3 is his destiny.

Heartening seeing the Rooney-RVP partnership show a lot of promise first on Saturday and then again today.

Anyone got his stats for the game? That seemed Scholes-esque to me. Dominated possession and kept things ticking over.

Edit - Uefa actually have really good stuff on this:

Rooney - 59 of 73
Ando - 71 of 91
Fletch(!) - 93 of 109
Cleverley - 78 of 88

Fletcher also completed 17 of 19 long passes!

Waynes passing/distribution since coming back from that cut on his thigh, has been phenomenal. I would even go as far as saying my pet hate word of awesome!!!

I'd like to see a front four of Rooney, RVP, Kagawa and Nani

If we play those four with Cleverley and Anderson in midfield and still see zombie passing, I think it's fair to say that there are problems that exist other than the players themselves. We should play them all at some point just to see what happens.

On paper, it's absolutely mouthwatering.

His free kicks are getting better and better. He is genuine threat from them now.

feck the haters. Love having him back to even half his best. He's a world class player.
