Watchmen - The Movie

I've read the graphic novel twice...I still found it dull and didn't like it. It's brilliantly made, but as a film it doesn't really work...it drags on and is boring. For me it was anyway.

Fair enough. I was hinting more that I could totally understand those who hadn't read it at all thinking 'wtf is this?'. Especially as the trailer paints it as a comic book action movie. Which it isn't.

I can see it being a marmite movie for fans of the novel. And in truth, it was a tad uneccessary but I struggle to think of how it could've been pulled off any better.

I loved the graphic novel, an amazing read. As for the film, well it was translated virtually scene for scene and I think that was it's weakness. Source material needs to be adapted to be big screen, not copied onto it, otherwise it just loses something about it. I guess soul is the best word, it felt very hollow at times.

BUT, having read and enjoyed the novel so much I did have a 2 and a half hour erection at seeing it turned into a movie, I just think that if I hadn't read the novel I would almost certainly have hated the film.

I saw it for the first time last night. I have not read the comic but I enjoyed the film, it was perhaps 20 minutes too long but I liked the story and I enjoyed the ending.

I wasn't expecting much from it because of the love it or hate it nature of peoples reactions and I think having a low expectation helped me to enjoy it more.

It focused more on story than action which could be why people with no knowledge of the source (like myself) may have been disappointed.

I finally watched it last night, haven't read the comic, but I found the movie actually pretty good. While I disliked the ending, I loved the story.

Will there be a sequel in the works, or did this movie cover the entire series?

Nope, thats it. No sequel or prequel - thankfully. Can never put anything past Hollywood though.

Cheers for the info.

Agree about Hollywood, I'd expect something like it from them. They're more hellbent on money than on the cinematic experiences of old.

Crazily, I also watched this for the first time last night. Personally, I really enjoyed it, but I watched it with a group of friends and opinion was really split. Some of us - like me - really liked it, but the others thought it was utter tripe.

I can see why they didn't like it, too. I mean, it's obvious that it was transferred nearly directly from a comic as there's far too many scenes that don't add to the story. It's much, much too long.

Watched it yesterday too - having had to wait for teh DVD because my other half wouldn't watch it and I'd feel like a tool going to the cinema on my own.

Well made film. It tries to be faithful to teh novel and too please new fans as well - a truly difficult taks.

It's not difficllt to see why it had been thought by many to be too sprawling a story with too much to say and essentially "unfilmable". Some interesting and relevant ideas in it.

I watched it apparently the same night as everyone else a couple nights ago.

I enjoyed it. Other than the over the top expose at the end with the "villain" I quite enjoyed the pragmatism of the ending on many levels.

This, I agree.

The other thing is, much was made about how it was faithful to the style and look of the comic. But it wasn't really. The film had a flashy, slick veneer but didn't have the vibrancy, warmth, energy of the gibbons/higgins images. And no amount of slow-mo or digital colouring can compensate for that. In fact it was incredible boring to look at.

This film has grown on me, upon further viewing I think it was very good

I liked it. I admit I have never read the comics (or even knew about it) which might have helped. In terms of characters and the overall plot I think it was pretty interesting. Synders style suits comic books and the pace and performances were generally quite good.

Not bad for a comic book adaptation.

Finally watched this last night.

I liked it. The Rorschach character was hilarious, though I'm not entirely sure if that was on purpose.
