Watchmen - The Movie

I finished reading the graphic novel yesterday and saw the movie a few hours later. I agree with some on here that the movie gets a bit slow when explaining the back story of a few characters. Overall, it was a pretty good movie, but not as good as the graphic novel, which is a high standard to measure up to. Also, I did like the movie's ending better; it was more believable to think the world governments would believe dr. manhattan turned against the US than a one-eyed alien attacking new york ending in the book.

I'm not sure how it only got an R rating. it was pretty gratuitous at times. I'm glad I reconsidered taking some girls to see it.

Film was too long and real slow. Too much dialogue and really the movie only had one character...Roscarch. He was awesome, but just felt the others really did not develop.

Also, why cant Dr Manhattan put on some clothes. Or bare minimum underwear. We don't want to see him walk around with his junk, seriously, just cover it up with that brown thing he wore. Or just never have the camera point down? There were too many nudity scences....which were not needed and really added nothing to the plot or movie.

The only two things i enjoyed out of that film was Rorsharch and that chick.

I knew I could only hold off from nerding out for so long..

It's an indication of his growing further and further out of touch with humanity, the scenes where he wears the underwear thing are all flashback scenes. He sees no need to wear clothes except when he's making public appearances.

The acting performances were solid enough, but no one really put a stamp on the film in the same way Downey Jnr or Ledger did with last year's comic book movies. Had the movie had an outstanding acting performance, it would've been on par with The Dark Knight and Iron Man, I'd rank it third after them ahead of the likes of Spiderman 2 and X Men 2.

I actually thought this is one of the best films I've ever seen. It makes you constantly think about it afterwards, and the longer time goes on, the better you realise it was. I tried explaining it to somebody today, and it woudl take me longer than the film was to explain it so it just shows you how much actually happened. All in all it will probably be the best film I see this year, and was better than Dark Knight IMO. Shall definitely be getting it on Blu-Ray when it's out.

Alot of people are saying this, I'm not getting it to be honest.

Might have to make a second trip.

Is this out in IMAX?

Is it better than the Dark Knight?

I thought it was, but it's nowhere near as simple as the Dark Knight. Some people seem to get annoyed with how long it is (nearly 3 hours), but they couldn't have had it any shorter otherwise not a lot would make sense. I also think a lot of people were expecting it to be like X-men in terms of lots of people with super-powers, where infact there's not really much of it. The fight scenes are awesome! I would say it's definitely worth watching

If you think that then just wait for the extended versions coming on dvd. I've heard there's going to be a 3 and a half hour directors cut and 4hr20min 'complete' version.

Madness to those who say its better than Dark Knight. Madness.

I can gather that from the way he is buried into work and neglects his relationship. His danglign junk does not need ot tell me that. Or atleast cut the cameria angle up!

You're really that repulsed about seeing a cock for at the very most 10 seconds, that it ruined a perfectly brilliant film?

Serious? Source?

Can you confirm?

Would make sense as even though I dont know the original story, it was still obvious that a lot had been cut out - the film just didnt flow properly.

just come back from watching it

could have been so much better if they trimmed half an hour of shite from it

was there any need for half the talking scenes with the big blue bell end?

at the end of the movie he's saying "things never end.." and im saying out loud in the cinema "yeah, like this fecking movie"

an ass numbing 6 out of 10 from me

only saving grace was ginger balls

Excellent stuff. I expected the extended version would include the tales of the Black Freighter.

Yep. The director's cut includes 'Tales of the Black Frieghter' (with Gerrard Butler as the voice of the Captain) and 'Under the Hood' (Holis Mason's autobiography).Should be great !!

Plus from what I've heard it will include scenes from the newstand, Rorschach's shrink etc .. should be the better film with these scenes included.

People walked out when I went as well. Jeez, if you can't sit still for 2 and a half hours or whatever it is why even bother going to the cinema?

They should show The Incredibles on a second screen for those who are hard of thinking or incapable of sitting still for 3 hours, it was the same story minus all the grit anyway.

Sadly it looks like I'm not going to get to see this one at the cinema as the missus really isn't up for a 2 and ahalf hour comic book movie from my youth and I'm not sad enough to head to the cinema on my own to watch it. I'll have to wait for the DVD but am cheered up by the news that the Black Freighter will feature in the extended release.

I won't go to the cinema to see much these days. I am nervous about comic book conversions because they are often so shit. And I don't even know this one.

Watchmen's definitely worth reading Wibbs, far better than most graphic novels and certainly not your run of the mill superhero nonsense. Only the Sandman books by Neil Gaiman are better IMO.

I know what you mean about cinemas, the combination of idiots answering their mobiles, rustling food packaging and during the Dark Knight the number of 2 and 3 year olds screaming their heads off in terror while their parents tried to ignore them does take the shine off somewhat while the sub arctic temperatures in Asian cinemas make the whole thing bloody uncomfortable when you're dressed for the 34° temperature outside.

Whatvever about seeing the movie, you should definately read the comic book first, as Bury Red said it's not your typical comic book fare, it's on a whole other level in terms of substance.

Well I think some people (myself included) who didnt know the story at all were expecting an all action superhero film - the trailers make it look like an XMen type of thing but this is not like that at all

10 minute monologues from a big blue cock on Mars is not everyone's cup of tea

but seriously, is there any need for the big blue cock?

I think what they were trying to do is deconstruct the Superman-myth. If you were all powerful, all-knowing, able to bend time-matter-space at will, would you really feel the need to wear any clothes (never mind a costume or a cape) or have any other insecurities at all.

Hence, the blue cock !! :annoyed:

That's the danger that makers and the fans knew well before it hit theatres - What would the normal movie-goer (who hasn't read the holy book) take away from the theatre ? Would it be too off-beat for the person who went thinking that it was an all out action film ?

Just out of curiousity Rood - Did you not find the monologues from Manhattan and Rorschach interesting ? .. or was it just so unexpected that it was difficult to play attention to them in a theatre ?

Just looked back at the trailer, and it does emphasise the action aspect of the movie, in fairness. Looking at the reviews, its clear who did a bit of research and who didn't, the Herald gave it one star and it was clear they didn't have a clue what was going on.

I still am yet to see the film, but this sounds interesting. I was wondering how they could ever capture all the different media involved in the graphic novel; seems they just didn't even try.

Tales of the Black Freighter was my favourite part of it. I thought it was really brilliant.

I saw the movie yesterday and i thought it was alright, not the best movie i've seen in my life (or this year... 2009 is really turning into the year of the good film, a lot more to come and theres been a few hits already!) but i enjoyed it throughout. Most people seem to hate the 10 minutes spent on each characters story but i liked those parts as it showed how they ended up like they ended up.

In all i'd give it a 7 or 8 out of 10 - it was great but not brilliant
