Virgil van Dijk | VVD throws a hissy fit

Think Mou could transform him into a world class defender. His acclamatising is insane, from Groningen to best player of Celtic and Schotland to best player of Southampton and one of the best CB's in the league. Shame for the injury.

He could be like a Smalling with more ball playing qualities, dont let him go to Liverpool.

Agree signing him should be a no brainer.

Him, Bailly, Rojo and Tuanzebe is our central defence sorted for years.

Hope the City interest is true. A defence of Walker - Kompany - VVD - Mendy (Stones covering injuries) would be a blessing after a year of Sagna, Clichy and Kolarov constantly in the mix.

When seeing some players play, you just see that they are really good. Like standing out. This was the case when VVD was playing for Celtic.
Reminds me of Kompany in his prime. 50£ is worth it.
If i am not mistaken the coach at Celtic at that time, norwegian Ronny Deila, contacted the big clubs in England and recommended him. Saying that he would play for them in 2/3 years time anyway, so why not get him now. And that he was too good for Southampton.

Between him, Lindelof and Keane, he's the obvious choice.

I remember some on here a few years ago predicted that VVD would be a fantastic signing, but it was denied but more on here. One person even said that Mbappe was a greater talent than Martial when the kid was 16 or so.

Decent defender who simply fits Soton's system and has a pure controlling DM in front of him. It wouldn't be the first time a CB from Southampton moves and looked nothing like his former self after his move. I really don't want Van Dijk at anywhere near £50m.

May as well buy the DM as well then.

I wanted us to buy him when he was at Celtic. But it is always the same story with this club only interested at very late stage when players like this cost you an arm and a leg to buy.

Wanyama is a similar story.

This is an interesting thread - https://www.redcafe.net/threads/glasgow-rumour-virgil-van-dijk.408684/

As for the price tag, I believe that it isn't £60m but more like £70m. And why not? I guess Stones set the bar at £50m and when you have more than one big boy sniffing around and you don't want to sell, you put on silly prices in case someone is silly enough to pay it. ANd IIRC Celtic are due a 10% cut. The club not mentioned in all this is Barca, who are in need for a CB or two. They did do some scouting this season, ostensibly it was to see Cedric Soares, but supposedly they scouted when Cedric was out injured.

TBH I would prefer when he leaves, that he goes abroad cos otherwise I might as well not renew my season ticket at Saints, but instead get one at Anfield.

He hasnt played since his injury so he wont be moving anywhere this summer. Its just idiotic lazy journalists trying to link him everywhere, but boards and chairmen who have to sign off on the 40 million that he'll cost wont pay a cent till he has got 25 games minimum and has proven he is the player he was and there are no lingering physical or psychological effects. Also he didnt have much pace to begin with and we dont know how the injury will affect his mobility.

He's almost certainly leaving this summer. It's just a matter of which club. His injury record is pretty good over the last few years, and out of all the big clubs interested in him, there will be plenty willing to take the gamble. He's also quite pacey for a CB.

I have watched a lot of VVD and he is so like Rio in playing style its not even funny. If anything he might actually be more aggressive and a better footballer. But thats just my opinion, others will say different no doubt.

He really is a class defender. For me he is our top buy as I am sick to death of watching every side play the ball to team mate while clearing where we seam to give it away mostly with sloppy rushed clearances. Will add some much needed composure back there.

He reminds me a lot of Rio, too. I wouldn't say he's a better footballer than him, though, and that's no slight on Van Dijk. Rio was just one of the best.

Stop it.

I don't understand why we're not in for him. I even thought we should have bought him when he was at Celtic and when LVG came in, I thought it was a no brainier that he would be his first Dutch signing.

We would have got him much cheaper back then. But I remember a lot of people here were calling him a terrible defender when I suggested it at the time.

Stories picking up pace that he's rejected Liverpool to sign for City in a £60m / £200k p/week deal. I'm a massive fan but

Don't they report that for every signing we make? We only had the 4th highest wage bill last season so it doesn't quite add up with all the reports - lazy journalism, and fits the "players only go to City for the money" script. Something tells me £200k a week for Van Dijk is BS.

Who knows... Anyhow, who cares? Money in football is mental these days. I've been a huge fan of his since his Celtic days and I think he'll be a great signing for City. The figures are ludicrous though.

60m for him is insane. But at least he's a defender unlike Stones

£60m maybe but no-one would be mental enough to pay him £200k a week. He's only getting about £50k at Southampton.

4th highest wage bill because of the way wages are reported isn't it? Like only players wages are reported and rest all staff wages are reported by holding company.

I don't think he's much like Ferdinand at all. He's fast and can play, but they're not that similar stylistically. I think the closest thing is probably Alderweireld. In the 15/16 season he conceded 9 fouls all year. Committed 14 this year, with 1 yellow to his name. Those are Rio type stats -- even in his last season at QPR he went 27 games without conceding a foul! My favourite Rio stat though, was went he went 53 games without a yellow -- over 4515 minutes (it was from the 2009 game vs Liverpool until January 2011ish).

Players wages could easily triple / quadruple when making a big money move especially given there was big competition for him.

Yep, definitely more similar to Alderweireld than to Rio.

Of course, I'm not arguing that point. I just don't think VVD has done enough for anyone to offer him 200k a week. It wouldn't suprise me if someone does but it just further re-inforces how insane football is getting.

He'll be the most expensive defender of all time if these figures are true... I mean it's hit peak madness alright.

I honestly think he is suited to Guardiola's style of football and that might influence his decision on where he goes - if he leaves obviously - and City might be the most attractive option for him. I hope not, and he signs for United and forms an awesome CB partnership with Bailly.

Guardian do reference that to be fair, so you're free to throw in an extra £4.4m for wages held at CFG if you wish. Regardless, Van Dijk on £200k would make him our highest paid player on base salary - I just don't see that being true. I also think £60m is crazy, but I could see that being more realistic purely because Saints have no reason not to play hard ball and keep him for odd.

£60m ffs  Really glad he won't be joining us in that case.

£60m for this guy? Fecking hell.

Premier League money gone mad, clubs are spunking money everywhere on mediocre/decent talent while there's probably 10 defenders like VVD in La Liga available for relative peanuts.
