Virgil van Dijk | VVD throws a hissy fit

I'm sure I'll get stick for saying this but personally I don't think he's any better than Smalling
I dunno, I'm just assuming he is, based on what I read. The comparison was mostly based on looks if I'm being honest. My only lasting impression of Van Dijk is him getting destroyed by Martial last season. I'm sure he's had better moments since.

Agree but there's very few of those around. And given that we're not linked to any, I'd rather take a high-potential defender than overpaying for the defenders mentioned in the OP.
The best in terms of potential in the market is Lindelof and even he is currently over priced. Its not going to be a good summer to buy a CB.

From what I have seen your sanity needs to be questioned if you don't think this guy is quality. Great distribution, dominates attackers and the pocket space, anticipation and interception, fast powerful and built like a bull, fantastic in the Air and gets a few goals as well. It would be so nice to get someone who can head them in from set pieces again.

All good until you see his fitness level in recent times.

The whole market seems to be overpriced so I'd much rather overpay for a position we actually need to strengthen.

Any worse than ours? As long as he has one functioning leg he'll do
I don't know for sure, but in recent time his leg has been even less functional than say Jones. I meant haven't seen him playing for ages

Did Southampton actually perform any worse without him this season? You would think that they would suffer a lot from losing a player worth £50 mill.

Interesting reports from Sky today. Whether it's true or not, we will see. I can see the Bailly and Van Dijk partnership working though.

He's only 20 and he managed a good few tackles last night and he even beat Pogba on strength. Sure he may not be the best on the ball but we don't seem to be the kind of team that plays out of the back anyway, and he'd cost much less than the people we're linked to. He'd be a good understudy to Bailly (I still see Bailly-Rojo being are first choice partnership) and could ultimately be nurtured into a world class CB.

One of our biggest weaknesses atm is our inability to play out from the CBs - hence why Blind has a number of appearances there as he is the only one who can do it. Bailly is average on the ball but makes up for it with how good a pure defender he is but you can only have one of these types. I really don't see the need to buy someone only a few years younger than Bailly, half the player and probably no better than Axel.

The best defenders don't need to go to ground because they can stay in the right position. Don't just watch a flying tackle or shoulder barge on Pogba and think 'this guy is quality, he's fast and strong' - ask why he's had to chase back/why he's out of position/why Man Utd wanted him to have the ball.

So... Does anybody know when he's actually back? He hasn't played a game since that injury in January.

I fully trust Jose if he thinks one of these 3 are good enough, then that's good enough for me too

He's precisely the type of defender needed: good passing range and superb in the air (probably among the best 5 centrebacks in Europe in that regard). Given his injury, this would represent something of a gamble, though.

We will sign Keane.

We should have got him when he was at Celtic. Not sure why we did not go for him at that time when it was apparent he was going to be a star in the near future

Denayer looked like a beast in the Scottish league. It's impossible to gauge how they will transition into the Prem.

So...basically a better version of Smalling.

If Smalling could play football and knew what positioning is for he'd be VVD.

Don't see why. Doubt it's a recurrent injur or one that is likely to diminish his physical capabilities when he recovers.

He's the best out of the 3 mentioned CBs. I trust Jose with buying defenders. Im sure he'll sort our backline this window.

When Liverpool have finished stealing Southampton players they'll have a very good mid table side.

Regarding VVD, he's defintely a proven defender at league level, one of the best around. I wonder how he'd cope in the Champions league. I look at the Juventus defence and think of an impenetrable wall. I'd really like someone who's a seasoned pro at the best level, a player who the rest of the defence could look at and get confidence from, a central version of Valencia. Unfortunately there aren't many of them in the world. Hummels, Ramos, Bonnuci, Thiago Silva - we're not likely to sign one of those!

Didn't he play in the champions league with Celtic or is he from the period where they kept failing to qualify into the groups?

I don't think he's worth 60m but imo he's one of the best choices for United. I'd pick him ahead of Lindelof. Furthermore he seems like the type of center back Mourinho likes. He's also already adapted to the Premier League. He'd be my choice if the other options are Keane or Lindelof.

Problem is you cant ignore the price tag.

Proven Prem experience and the nearest player to a fit Vincent Kompany.....one of the best CB in Europe

He suffered ligament damage requiring corrective surgery and hasn't played football for over 4 months. Of course there are risks involved.

It's going to be Keane, anyway.

Van Dijk, Bailly, Rojo, Blind and Tuanzebe would be a great set of CBs.

Like Rojo? Haven't seen anyone express worry about his standard when he returns.

Think he is very overrated tbh and for the money being discussed would prefer a hat full of other players.

Yes, there's a chance Rojo and Zlatan will not be the same post-injury, just as there always is with ligament damage. Hopefully that won't prove to be the case.

Played for Celtic in the 13/14 CL group stage. I honestly thought that he might get found out in the PL after his time at Celtic, he strolled it, but he has stepped up since moving south. I also thought Denayer might turn out to be the better of the two when they played together at Celtic, I thought he was a better player in terms of just purely defending, but his career has stalled a bit.

van Dijk-Bailly would be a very physical partnership and would probably be very difficult for the opponents to handle.

Top of my wishlist if we bring in a central defender. Has it all to play alongside Bailly and perform a good partnership.

I think we're appropriately covered at CB, especially with the emergence of Axel. We have Bailly, Rojo, Jones, Smally, Blind and Axel, that's 6 CBs.

Even if our injury curse continues, we still have ample in that area and investment is needed further up the field in my view.

Might get some stick for this but I don't think he's that much better than Rojo. I'm convinced Bailly has a much higher ceiling than him. He'd cost around 50m for us to sign him. Why not go for Keane at half the price who's actually young, would count for us in the HG rule thing and is also talented.

In a world where Real pay 45 million for some new born brazilian lad, 60 million for VVD seems fair.

I hate the price tag but feck it, I'd rather pay 60 for him and 25 for Keane tbh
