Virgil van Dijk | VVD throws a hissy fit

Van dijk would be great. Lindelof so-so.
Michael keane -please please no.

I like him but I'm skeptical if he'd be a good signing for the money. He's partial to a brain-fart or two, isn't he? If it was less than £30m I'd be happy, but don't think that is likely.

Thats was what critics used to say about Rio Ferdinand before and during his Manchester United tenure.

We should have got him when he was at Celtic. Not sure why we did not go for him at that time when it was apparent he was going to be a star in the near future

You just dont know how a player will turn out. Ferguson had a knack of buying players of other PL clubs because he could judge them fairly through seeing them in the PL.

He's a leader, he can play with either foot, and he's physically a beast. He's also used to the league and is consistently one of the highest rated defenders. Best available CB in my opinion.

He's also a commanding presence, which is something we don't really have.

Out of the three, he's probably the best, although I haven't seen much of Lindelof. But we shouldn't be looking to buy defenders in the £50m region.

I'd much rather have Davinson Sanchez.

I didn't even know he existed up to the point he was linked with us. :( He's not exotic enough to be good. A good CB needs to be bald and mean looking.

He's my dream CB signing. Got experience in the Prem (although that isn't the be all and end all), he's young enough but experienced enough to come in and be the leader. A quality defender and can really play with the ball. Oozes class but dominates in the air as well.

V Liverpool at Anfield in the EFL he made them look like little boys. He's ready for the step up. I hope we get him.

Although you have to think City, Chelsea and Liverpool will also be after him.

Did he pick up a knee injury? That can't go unnoticed if it was that.

I haven't focused on any of the three mentioned in matches but I'd chose Van Dijk from what I have seen.

Either get a cheap player with no injury problems to replace Jones and add depth and use Rojo and Bailly as a partnership or just spend big money on a player that will improve the back line for sure.
I have the feeling Dijk is somewhere in the middle - will cost a fortune and at the same time I'm not convinced he's an improvement over Rojo or Bailly.

I think people have to come to terms we aren't going to get better than what we already have. What we require is better characters at the back and a better injury record. Except for this season Smalling has improved but Jones is injured too often.

I don't get why people think he is good! Terrible on the ball, something we desperately need to address ourselves and Mou was obviously happy to let him have the ball last night. Caught out of position a few times as well (the fact he is fast and recovered/made a hollywood tackle doesn't make him a good defender)

He is just a much lesser Bailly

Van Dijk is an incredible player. As much as I like M.Keane, I hope we opt for Virgil.

van Dijk is the best player of the three but he wouldn't be the first player to be badly affected by a serious injury. Take the injury out of the equation and I'm all for it, but I'm nervous here.

I'd have him ahead of Keane.

Plus he'd probably make our shitty corners into half decent ones as he's a big threat from set pieces. We haven't had that since the days of Vidic.

I think he would form a good partnership with Bailly. He is good on the ball but also strong in the air and in the tackle.

He's only 20 and he managed a good few tackles last night and he even beat Pogba on strength. Sure he may not be the best on the ball but we don't seem to be the kind of team that plays out of the back anyway, and he'd cost much less than the people we're linked to. He'd be a good understudy to Bailly (I still see Bailly-Rojo being are first choice partnership) and could ultimately be nurtured into a world class CB.

I've been impressed with him often but I'm a bit worried about him coming back from 100% after being out since January.

Atheltic non-ball playing defenders like Sanches are easier and cheaper to find. Its the ones with the footballing IQ and on the ball ability that are rare, and those are the types we need.

Sanchez is as poor on the ball as Smalling is. If people want us to properly compete for the title next year then signing raw 20 year old centre halves from the Dutch league is not the way forward.

He's a tall and strong CB. Just the way Mourinho likes it.
Also, he's pretty good on the ball and i think a bit more experienced than Lindelof and Keane. Would definitely buy him out of those three. Good enough to be a starter and still has potential.

The problem is that I think he's going to be really expensive, and at that point he's not worth it. I don't think there's a massive difference between him and Keane. Keane is supposedly going for £25m, whilst Van Dijk has been touted around for £60m+, I just think that extra money can be better spent in other areas we need such as left back or a Carrick replacement.

He's not back from long term injury so there's no chance of any deal being done this summer. Any speculation is thus nonsense. No sensible club will pay a big fee with a substantial contract for player with a long-term injury until the player is back playing and it is clear the problem Is solved and the player is back to his usual standard.

He is 194cm (6"4 1/2) and has won 75% of his aerial duels. I don't care about anything else as Bailly has the pace, and footballing ability. sign him up. we need a monster sometimes because if we are gonna sit back and protect leads, team will throw balls at us

Agree but there's very few of those around. And given that we're not linked to any, I'd rather take a high-potential defender than overpaying for the defenders mentioned in the OP.
