Perhaps Ole has just been reading too many redcafe posts from the past 3 or 4 years which got him to be obsessive about "ball playing defenders" . Lindelof has improved in that area this season and could be nominated as our most effective user of the ball from CB because of how many good long passes he's used to get the likes of Rashford in behind the defence. But he's not a solid defender and in my opinion theres no reason why our DM can't be playing those passes Lindelof has played, while a better defender defends at CB. Makes no sense to me to have it the other way round

Totally agreed on all points, especially the fact he should be recognised for a good few long balls up to the front but like you said, why not get a good DM to take that responsibility, and in a quicker fashion? Defence wise, very unreliable

He persists as he's our second best choice, Ole can't magic new players into the club.
If Pogba goes we can do both. We get Botman and his strengths are Lindelof' weaknesses, I'd say he'd compliment both Harry and Lindelof. Under 40 million euro's he's possible the best option out there and is having an outstanding season thus far

So you think Bailly and tuanzebe are a level below lindelof? Bailly, yes, has injury problems and continues to this season, but when he's available he's 3rd choice defensively? Dunno seems strange Lindelof is considered 2nd.

Just unlucky for their goal as he got a good tackle in albeit abit to weak. It was an unreal shot from not the greatest position as well. 9/10 that doesn't go in. Otherwise than that he performed well and has been one of our most solid performers this year.

Sloppy overall today but you cant blame him much for the goal. Brilliant turn and then a perfect top corner finish. Sometimes it happens and theres not much you can do about it.
Yes you definitely can. He had an easy chance to clear the ball and for some reason completely mishit it. Any normal defender is smashing that into the stands.

I feel like you need to watch that goal again if you think it was "nothing you can do about it"

Lindelof is just as much of a liability than Bailly. We need another Maguire.

It's not unlucky, he did the exact same thing for Zaha's goal against us early in the season. He's just weak.

Not his best game but hardly a disaster, instead a decent lowest level. Cleared more in the the air than usual and was quite good at winning back the ball in second half when we had moved up McFred and both the CBs pushed higher (for example at our first goal). Gave away possession stupidly at the end of first half and for some unknown reason chose to go for the outside of Davis in the 80th minute.
Two good long ball, especially the one to Rashford which looked like close to a penalty.

Lindelöf made a blunder, no doubt about it. Any normal defender does sometimes.

What? Off course I bloody can. He gave the guy all the space in the world to turn and get the shot off. Seriously it was schoolboy defending. Someone needs to tell him there’s no social distancing in football

Come on stop making excuses.

Beyond ridiculous he's got still some defenders here. Not just the goal situation he was weak as feck again in the second half at other, only we didn't concede from there. We will never win any major trophies with a championship level player. Really he wouldn't get into any of the Premier league teams going one team by one, he just can't defend and occasional nice pass won't save him. 33 yo Jonny Evans is better than him. Parody of a defender.

Beyond pathetic that his agent has to come to the football forum and argue here with us that he's not all that bad right? Funnily even commentators these days are picking it up because it's so obvious.

We will improve infinitely when this guy is finally gone, unfortunately non of the other CBs can stay fit as we all know..

I’m guessing your Swedish. Lindelof has been very hit and miss this year and without doubt not ‘one of our most solid performers’.

Not his best game, but the first goal was not his fault. His rating in the match thread is a joke. He was not our worst player. At all.

Yes it was. He was lucky AWB saved his arse otherwise he’d of cost us another goal late on. Genuinely shocked at people’s interpretations when it comes to obvious things during a game. Anybody who’s played football at any decent standard would believe it was Lindelofs fault for the first goal.

How about blaming him solely for the goal. You know considering his defending was horrific.

Excuses for what? Wasn’t his best game but it still took almost a freak shot for them to score. So many drama queens here. A CB who has been solid the whole season has day where he plays under his normal level and then suddenly he’s shit and needs to be replaced. How much did they create?

It was a mistake that cost a goal though right? you're at peace with that?

It is only Henderson, Shaw and Bruno in today’s starting XI who’s got higher ratings from the
Red Cafe members this season so most people actually seem to think he’s had a good season.

It’s ridiculous to blame him for not being higher in the league. Last time we lost with him
In the team was more than 6 months ago.
He has played 8 draws, 6 of them with clean sheets. Very hard to say that we have lost points because of him.

I just dont see why Ole persists. All this talk of £100m+ for Sancho, £80m for Sancho, where a CB partner for Maguire should be #1 on the list.
Yeah, but who? I’m far from a fan of Victor Lindelof but most of the names we’re linked to really don’t to me sound like they’ll comprehensively be better at defending than him.

It was a mistake that cost a goal though right? you're at peace with that?
Wouldn’t call that a mistake, but that a question of definition I guess. I think it is more that he could have done it better. A mistake was more when we gave away the ball which created the chance. He could have done better for the clearance and got rid of the ball, but after that it felt as he had him where he wanted him. That’s normally an easy save for the keeper but it was a perfect shot.

Most goals a CB could have done better but it doesn’t mean it was a mistake all the time. Both our goals in open play was after poor actions from the CBs. If any of those goals had happened to us this place would have gone even more toxic.

He’s not just shit though it’s just that you keep making excuses for him. He’s below the standard we should accept

Wouldn’t call that a mistake
He had a simple clearance and he missed kicked it, it's a mistake and it cost us a goal. He usually gets away with it but not this time. We're just lucky his 2nd mistake didn't cost us either.

I'd love to see the reactions if this was the Bailly thread is all I can say..

If you think it was so simple that Lindelof normally clears 9/10 of those then sure, a mistake. He normally gets away with it because he got the player to a position where normally is no direct threat. It took a perfect shot to score from there.

Considering how good you thought Bailly was vs Roma I can at least predict your reaction.

VICTOR LINDELOF - 5
Failed to read Traore's cute turn for the goal and then lacked the alertness to get across and block the shot.

Also regularly got caught too high up the pitch and when Villa broke Traore, El-Ghazi and Watkins were able to find the areas to hurt Man Utd.
A match like today validates why Man Utd have been linked with signing so many centre-backs to partner Maguire next season.

BBC online
and while Lindelof should have offered greater resistance for Traore's opener, there was little Henderson could do to keep out his fine strike.

Manchester Evening News
Too weak in challenging Traore and he was punished for the opener. Gifted Ollie Watkins a chance to level in the second-half. 5

could go on, everyone has said he was tripe today

Please stop posting here, you're really embarrasing yourself, it's for your own good.

I never got how people can be bigger fans of certain player than a club and spend time commenting on the club's football forum to death.

So he only got 5/10, same as Rashford and McT, and just below Bruno and Maguire who got 6/10. Not good but not a disaster either.

The irony in this post...
Really, just put me on ignore and you’ll never have to read my posts again. You will not need to get angry over my posts and the rest of the forum will not have to read your replies.

You have never posted anything about football, only insults and hate.

Man you are either blind or just saying stuff to defend him.

I don’t see why he wasn’t anything but a disaster today

I think people are missing the that it was 2 pieces of poor defending in that passage of play. He did well to read the turn initially, for some reason decided to give him the ball back but ok we're still not in that much danger.. And he then preceded to just let him shoot. Watch the replay again, all Lindelof had to do was put a leg out to block the shot. I don't know if he thought the angle was too tight for him to score but I'm convinced he could have blocked that if he shown more urgency.

Slowly he should be turned to our 3rd best defender before turning in to our 4th best defender and things will be happy.

He is a useful player but shouldnt be our 2nd best defender.

We won, secured top 4, they got xG of 0.5 indicating that they created basically nothing against our defence. After the match I write this

Which seems so offensive to some people they need to give me personal insults etc.

I thought he was about 5/10 which the rating you yourself posted agreed with. You thought he was much worse. I can live with that. Good bye.

He’s been quite good lately, but against Villa he was terrible. Outpaced at least twice, then outmuscled and just fannying about for their goal. The pundits even called him soft. You don’t find many centre backs that are both slow and weak, and poor in the air. He reads the game well, but not that well. His passing is good, but not that great. He has glaring weaknesses but not obvious strengths that elevate him.

To be fair, the last game we played without him in defence, we conceded 13 shots on target. I think he has been very good alongside Maguire for a while now.
He's been on a decent run recently. But, if you lack a little pace, it only takes 1 bad one for the fans to get their knives out.

You stay a foot back from the attacker precisely because you run the risk of getting turned if you get too close. It was a good turn and a great shot. Sometimes you just hold your hands up to a good goal.

We will have to agree to disagree. I’ve watched that goal multiple times now to see if I’m being harsh and it just makes me angry. I’ve never seen a cb so averse to physical confrontation, it’s a big problem

btw every single review I’ve read too has him down for being too soft. That’s before we talk about the 2nd half chance he coughed up too
