Weak as piss for their goal.

Had a tough first half. Don’t blame him too much for the goal as DCL is one of the strongest PL players in the air. Second half was quite good imo and he had some important clearances and interceptions. 6/10.

(Can question the strategy a little at the goal. Everybody knows Pickford often hit long balls to DCL, who will target Lindelof and not Maguire. Why not let one midfielder assist or let Maguire be prepared for that long ball?)

Calvert-Lewin was pulling onto him all game and winning the ball just about every time. Calvert-Lewin 6 aerial duels won, Lindelof 1

Poor for the goal but good otherwise, he is the one that keeps the defence together. We just need to teach him how to go up against strong aerial players, or the rest of the team. You don't need to win every header if you cut the long ball out in the first place or prepare for the second ball. The latter is clearly what we did second half.

Doesnt inspire any confidence for me, hopefully Axel can regain sharpness and take over from him. Imagine we had a Koulibaly type player?
Also why the hell is maguire not marking the CF? Is it tactical because its happened all season, Lindelof goes up against the strong CF and maguire covers, seems it should be the other way round.

Not my kind of defender...even though I can accept he has his fair share of decent enough games.

Just not strong in the jump.

Yeah but ok for the rest of the game. Think people need to start enjoying victories, rather than picking the feck out of whom ever is the kicking boy for that moment. Some need to try and show some support rather than just being negative no matter the score.

He tried his best in the second half to give Everton the second goal but they were really poor. Terrible defender.

I’ve seen my next line written before but it’s never been truer.

Remember when we had Rio and Vidic and Liverpool supporters kept trying to convince themselves that Skrtel and Agger would see them good? Well, Lindelof is our Agger, but probably (definitely) worse at defending.

Bullied today.

Last season Calvert -Lewis had an average of winning 6.4 aerial duels per 90 minutes so a little below average today. He won 6 and lost 5. I think he won 3 aerials against Lindelof and 2 against Maguire but could be wrong. In the end he lost the match.

He was playing for the worse team. Imagine if Martial put in his performance today for Everton, he'd have been on the losing team for sure

I'm enjoying the victory plenty, I just didn't enjoy Lindelof's performance and I'll voice that in this thread. I'm sick of giving these players free pass after free pass, it was a pathetic goal to give away. He was bullied by Calvert-Lewin who didn't even play particularly well.

Was always going to struggle aerially vs DCL so it wasn't surprising to see them focus on him with their balls forward. However I would've expected us to be more aware of them using that tactic and doing more to help Lindelof and win the second ball or putting someone in front of DCL to make things harder for him, especially as McTominay was on that side and would've been a better physical match.

Outside of that though he was good, read the play well a few times covering for others and was good on the ball for the most part.

Victor’s weakness is in the air, he’s about PL centre back average there. Calvert-Lewin is very strong in the air and there are not many in the PL who win more aerials than him. Anybody who has watched Everton knows that. In the end him winning an aerial vs Lindelof and AWB failing to cover cost a goal. But that’s all they got. 1-3 and a win.

This was very strange. Especially for the goal where there would be plenty of time for that.

I think he is one of our most inconsistent outfield players. He has a certain level he usually keeps but that level is just not good enough. Him having really good games just doesn't happen frequently enough and he hasn't developed ways to negate his weaknesses.

Had a tough time against a physical DCL today, which is something he does normally struggle with. That said, think he was much better in the second half.

What free passes are our players getting? Pray tell as it’s constant picking and moaning by a lot of people.

Not really surprising he was targeted in the air .

None whatsoever. Every team in the league knows Lindelof is weak in the air and every team in the league pumps the ball at him constantly cos of it. We got a typical Lindelof performance today. We know what he's good at and what he's not good at. Any time we play a team that forces him to deal with the aerial ball he'll make mistakes. We just have to live with that and be ready to contest the second ball, unless Tuanzebe overtakes him or we buy a better centre half.

Your comment was literally a free pass. "Yeah but he was ok for the rest of the game" is what you wrote.

Oh ok then, none of our players should make a single error in any game, otherwise they should be harshly criticised for an extended period and no mention of any atonement.

Just look at the previous posts before yours. Even with two defensive midfielders in front of him, people are saying Lindelof needs to be protected by his team mates by switching for aerial balls and ask him to go for 2nd balls instead.

If by 'targeted' they mean 'aim a ball in his direction' then every defender is targeted.

The problem with Lindelof isn't that he can't head, it's just he doesn't switch on or has an appetite for them, which as your central defender is alarming. Straight away after the goal, he won a few decent balls against DCL and then in the second half, forgets how to do it again.

That's the sign of a consistent weakness. It's like expecting AWB to improve his attacking contributions overnight.

But it wasn't just a single error, Calvert-Lewin was getting the best of him all afternoon.

Calvert-Lewin has and will continue to bully elite central defenders in the air. Seems a strange reason to be very critical of what was overall quite a good performance. Especially when Calvert-Lewin was generally kept very quiet, despite being almost unplayable in most of Everton’s games so far this season.

They got plenty, Calvert-Lewin winning the ball in the air was the start of most of their attacks.

But that’s just it though, I didn’t think it was a particularly good performance. He was kept mostly quiet because of Maguire, he wasn’t even that quiet considering he played a big part in their goal.

It wasn’t a fantastic performance but I thought he played well. I certainly wouldn’t crucify him for missing a few headers against arguably the most aerially dominant striker in the league right now.

As McManaman said on commentary. You can’t expect to win all your headers against C-L so defending against him is all about dealing with the second ball. Hence the United player most at fault was AWB.

You can't win all of them, but you can win more than 1 out 7 and for the other 6 you can make him uncomfortable and unable to link up with teammates by not getting a free header. He even managed to head the ball down to himself and get on the end of it

I don’t really share that view. Except for the goal, can’t remember if they got any other goal scoring opportunity from Lindelof losing a header. It’s not like the Everton central defence that conceded two goals unchallenged in the air. In the end they got 1 shot on target so not too successful attack.

Nobody saying that he covered thrice for Maguire being 100% absent again.
He was shit for their goal, but ok afterwards.

He was pretty good on the ground all day but was beaten in the air too many times for my liking.

I’m not sure where you get your stats from? Lindeof lost 3 aerials, not 6.

I think he's OK as CB in general, but in premier league we can only play him with Maguire as we will be bullied otherwise.

Thought he played very well aside from the header leading to the call which is a real shame but it’s a massive limitation he has. On the floor I think he’s are best defender to be honest he’s great in the tackle, passing and positioning and I’ve been a big critic of him in past

We all know Lindelof's shortcomings but he's a good solid defender.

Him not winning the header, Wan-Bissaka not getting tight and De Gea getting beat at his near post cause the goal. A collection of half mistakes and we get punished as always.

A bit surprising that Maguire did not go for those long balls. It was long time in the air.

Struggled with Calvert Lewin which was no surprise, it was the obvious match-up for Everton to go for.
