Maguire and Lindelof worked well last season, not perfect but they did a job. Perhaps we need to give that pairing another chance to build on the basic understanding they had developed.

By far his best game of the season today. He’s suddenly our 2nd best CB behind smalling

Dropping him had nothing to do with that shit show, but he's better than Maguire - just didn't cost as much.

I think he provided one crucial thing which our defense tend to be missing.
= composure/calmness

Well, just a bit, still not good enough and his defensive flaws are clear to see. Good teams will exploit that.

So now can everybody clamouring for more pace and strong tackling admit they dont know what they're talking about? Lindelof is not perfect but our defence doesnt fall apart like that with him there.

We would lose 6-1 with him as well. There is no difference between him and the rest
He has by far the best positioning from our defenders and is the most vocal one (he is consistently babysitting AWB and telling him what to do). He is not particularly great in other things at defending though.

Maybe Smalling will come and finally teach him some of that technique on the ball.

Considering how horrible all of our defenders look, including Maguire, are we willing to admit that at least somewhat of his poor play is due to other factors? I refuse to believe that every single defender we have is this poor just because they are bad players, Maguire himself was far better at Leicester than he currently is for us, as was Lindelof at Benfica.

It amazing how his stock went up just by not playing the game. Now all the hate that was directed at him got dumped on Maguire.

I think out current best CB partnership is Lindelof-Bailly. Fire and Ice. Balls to the wall crazyness with passive defending. The perfect ying yang.

He is our most composed one , I will give that. We are not conceding 6 with him in the side.

One thing is that Lindelof makes mistakes too, but the difference between him and Maguire is that, Lindelof seems unfazed no matter how stupid his mistakes was, and still playing with the same composure and calmness. While Maguire when he make a stupid mistakes it will linger on his mind for a while and that would lead to another stupid mistakes.
Bailly is just not good enough. We just need to stop playing him and keep Maguire-Lindelof partnership while playing a little deeper, and adjust the tactics accordingly

Very sensible. I really do not understand how anyone though Maguire is a quick CB? If you are not quick and if your partner is not quick then there is no way we can play a high defense line.

I find him in possession not composed at all. I find he panics under any kind of press. I don't think he would have made much difference v Spurs to be honest. Right now the lack of defensive cover from our midfield is shocking, the positioning of our full backs is poor also. Ole wants to play out from the back, but of our back 4 and keeper, we just don't have the personel to play that way

Our defensive problems are down to our choice of midfield and they have been evident since last season when ole tried to shoehorn pogba and matic in a double pivot.

Play Fred and Mctominay instead and watch up improve dramatically

I do not think so. I do not think he would been in such a high line like Bailly was. He is normally more aware of his lack of pace etc. So that space behind Kane for Son to run into would not be there.

I think we would have lost anyway, but some of the goals would most likely not have happened with him because of different game style to Bailly.
First goal, I don’t think Lindelof would head the ball in to the centre to Maguire, he would try to clear it. Like most defenders would.
Son’s goal at the free kick. When Maguire push forward, Lindelof falls back. I doubt this goal would have happened this way.

Also think he would work better as a unit with Maguire because of all the games they played together. But of course he might have made other mistakes. Im just speculating.

He needs games like everyone else in the squad does to gain match fitness but did not start against Russia in Sweden's friendly today. Opportunity missed.

Are there a lot of better Swedish CBs?

Looking at the starting eleven Sweden fielded against Russia it's pretty evident they were testing new players. Seven of the eleven starting players had less than 10 caps, including both CB's. They're playing two Nation's League games (Croatia and Portugal) during this break, so Lindelof will more than likely play in those instead.

Like vs Norwich?

I cant remember but did we have Bruno Fernandes then?

For me Mctomminay and Fred improved when we had creativity further up the field alongside the fact that Bruno Fernandes was one of the hardest working players who would drop on to midfield when Fred & Mctomminay needed help. Usually within those 3 we can fin the ball further up the pitch rather than allowing pressure to build up in deeper situations.

Earlier in the season when Fred & Mctomminay were playing Pereira lacked creativity, physicality and defensive ability so we would usually end up with a free run at two defensive box to box like midfielders. Whilst Bruno isnt one, the way he plays up and down the pitch adds to the box to box ability as a 3 man midfield.

Yes and he played. FA Cup

Decent match against Portugal and definitely a step up compared to some matches lately. Much more of a play making role for Sweden, maybe because he is not last man all the time as he is for United.

Was he sort of in midfield? Or as a CB?

No played left CB but moved forward more than normal, and was good with the ball and composed when Portugal pressed imo.

His defending for their goal was standard Lindelof weakness, but played well enough after that.

He was brought in because Smalling didn’t like the ball at his feet , Lindelof likes the ball at his feet but struggles to pick out a pass.

That tip off 10 seconds in and it’s passed back to him:wenger:

Samuel Luckhurst gave Lindelöf a really low rating again. This has been going on for years now. Did Lindelöf screw his girlfriend or something?

Apart from the failed pressuring before the goal (which was a team fault and extremely unlucky) I think he was pretty solid.

He is a straight hoofer of the ball isn't he? Also, horrible mistake costing us a goal. He is not getting any praise from me for clearing a few weak crosses in the box, honestly anyone standing there could do that, even the Newcastle defenders did that mostly all game as well.

He was good today. His involvement in the goal came long before it became dangerous. Where was the midfield to cut his pass? That pass was almost in their own half across the pitch to our left side. He cut our a decent bit of their attack which was not much. Anyway it was an own deflected goal.

Seems like Lindelof /Maguire are back on track or at least their way back on track. It was clear he had changed his game to win back balls early and high up. Of course that can fail once in a while but it can also be important in a game like this.
