If he continues playing for a top club then he surely will captain Sweden one day.

Wolves 1:1 Man Utd
Some sloppy passes first 20 minutes but after that he did ok, even managed to get best passing accuracy in both first and second half. Think he defended good, made good choices and looked good overall apart from the start. What I miss is the creativity from both CB. Lindelof advanced through in the last minute and with good success. I want much more of that from both of them.

Well, there you go.

I missed that from everybody, not just Lindelof. Maguire was even less creative and the midfield also need to improve that aspect of the game.

I had the feeling he missed many passes in first half but according to stats it was rather few.

He missed the very few passes that wasn’t totally easy in the first. His passing accuracy doesn’t really say much. He was ok defensively even though he wasn’t tested too much.

Very passive passing wise.

Anyone can give to Pogba and then stand back.

Not really seeing this 'ball playing CB'. Played the easy pass 9 times out of 10.

Shaky to start with but grew into the game.... Needs to pass forwards not just sideways.

He's not a "ball playing CB"

He's a "comfortable on the ball CB"

Basically he has decent technique for receiving and passing the ball around, but he wont regularly play the ball into more advanced areas that set the team on the attack, which is something Maguire will do

Pretty much every CB does, even the ones renowned for their passing. VVD will ping a beaut to the wing a few times a game but the vast majority of the passes are the short, simple, continuity types that we saw from ours tonight. You shouldn't be relying on the CB's for creativity.

I thought him and Maguire were solid, and nullified their strikers well. I don’t remember them having a sniff.

They were however let down by our midfield deciding it would be a good idea to let the league’s best long distance shooter have 10 yards of space outside our box.

His passing wasn't great but I actually thought his tackling was very good, barring one mistake in the first half.

Completely fecks up at least one high ball a game. Massive flaw in his game.

Slow start but was fine after that. Some on here are just waiting to go in on him irrespective of how he plays.

Yeah that's the disappointing part. He's comfortable on the ball but played risk adverse passes, which in effect are actually net-negative balls.

You can't have most of the possession and yet find that you play most of your passes to Pogba/Mctominay in the middle of your own half.

I'm not asking for creativity, just a bit more forward balls and ability on the ball where he doesn't sh|t himself whenever a player goes to press him. It effectively means Pogba/Mctominay have to drop further back.

Ok I'm ranting and slightly exaggerating but at least Jones will come up with the ball more and you know for sure someone like Smalling will go chasing the ball high up and dominate physically. Lindelof is like Shaw levels of passiveness.

It is for sure an issue I also have with Lindelof, the need to be more assertive in all facets of his game. That last piece of play when he drove into space led to the Shaw chance, he seems to be better at that than finding a penetrative pass. Have not seen Maguire step forward at all yet. I think the bigger issue is the lack of creativity in our full backs and midfield outside of Pogba. The quick movement of the ball that Maguire-Lindelof give you doesn't lead to much with that issue around and ahead of them.

Yeah I don’t really see him as a ball playing CB either, he’s comfortable with the ball at his feet but he rarely does anything proactive with it either through dribbling or passing, he just seems to pass responsibility onto whoever’s nearest to him. I hope he shows more on the ball this season because of not then, whilst he’s a good defender, I just don’t think he adds enough to the team, given our ambitions.

He beat Jota to a header in the 1st half - I consider this progress but he’ll let us down again soon.

He was alright. Made one mistake but rescued us a couple of times too. He fits well with the other 3.

I love how when Maguire or AWB have the ball he races into space to receive it. Contrast to our others who hide next to an attacker and hope the ball carrier doesn't spot them.

He was ok, him and Maguire certainly make us less shaky bringing the ball out from the back overall.

Unusually nervous start to the match but got better. Actually won a header that i didn't expect him to win  :D

To whom is he going to pass? They have us outnumbered us by 5 to 2 in midfield. If he plays a long one, their CBs head it away as none of our strikers can head the ball.
I think Ole should try him as a DM to see if he can play there. If he can that will free Pogba to go futher forward.

Had a good game. People like to nitpick on everything. One miss hit on a clearance volley and everything good he did rest of the game is forgotten.

First 20 minutes had me thinking this was the end of Lindelof's reign in the side. Ice man pulled it together and I believe he had the best passing stats after the 20 minutes. Stayed cool and collected with Harry and if it wasn't for a wonder strike he'd have another clean sheet.

Looks like he was encouraged to pass between the lines last night, it didn't quite come off every time but considering his passing is meant to be one of his best attributes it's about time we tried making use of it.

Agreed, I've seen a lot of harsh comments about our performance but really we limited them to a 5-10 minute spell, they just capitalised on their spell very well, it was such a good finish that even De Gea at full stretch couldn't keep it out.

Yeah he didnt start well and it seemed like he was trying to force it with his passing. He settled down which was good and we werent under the cosh at the end (which would have been the case last season having conceded the equaliser). Think Lindelof/Maguire will get better together, just a shame they didnt get a pre season together.

He didnt do much, thats generally his problem. He's quite passive. He won 3 tackles and made 2 clearances with 2 headers, and 0 blocked shots. 7 actions combined.

Maguire was 14 actions combined, Coady was 9 actions combined, Bennet was 8 actions combined and Boly was 9 actions combined. And the Wolves CBs had the defensive responsibility shared between 3 people. This tends to be how Lindelof is, the CB on the pitch that does that contributes the least defensive actions. Maguire does more on the ball too so he feels quite pointless.

I'm not a fan of this partnership tbh.
Axel is a much better prospect. He got the pace and athleticism Lindelof lacks.

So what. Maldini made 1 tackle every 2 games. Rio averaged about the same. 1 tackle every 2 games, and 1 headed clearance per game. It's a meaningless stat for those who have no other way to judge a player.

Lindelof is the Rio to Maguire's Vidic. You can't have two of the same.

Watch out, they will claim Maldini and Rio were carried by their centre back partners.

Of course the Wolves CB's will have done much more. United dominated the game. Also when its a back 3 the LCB & RCB do a role of CB and fullback.
As far as the difference between Maguire and him goes, it could be down to the fact that most of the Wolves attacks were coming from our left and time and again Maquire had to cover for Shaw in the second half.

Yeah that's spot on.

It used to frustrate me no end last season where he would always pick the easy pass instead of playing a slightly riskier pass between the lines - but thats because I just expected him to be a ball playing CB, as that's what everyone refereed to him as, but he's simply not that player at the moment.

As he is, he's sold, dependable, but definitely upgrade-able. Would be an excellent 3rd choice CB though.

Exactly. Out of 61 CBs (who played as CBs more than 10 games) Van Dijk was in

55th position for tackles won per 90 mins
51st in Interceptions
27th in clearances
47th in shots blocked
6th in aerial duels won

Must be a shit CB.

This is a very absurd criticsm that Lindelof always seem to get. SO what do you want him to do just make rash tackle or just give away stupid pens like Jones. He does his job almost effectively every game. He is not a Ramos type defender and trust me we don't need one considering we have found our leader in Maguire. All we need Lindelof to do is do his job effectively. And we have yet to see the best of him.

He just needs to be less passive and try to win the ball a bit earlier in moves, or take command of situations. Same as any CB.

How many times did he make 8 or less defensive contributions and aerials?

He averaged 12.1 per game last season. Not 8. Closer to double

I have never seen Lindelof shy from receiving the ball or moving the ball forward. He also steps out of his position to make tackles and man marks his players very well. I believe we have not seen the best of him but one thing I do see with him is he looks assured with each passing game. He needs a constant partner and in Maguire he has that.
