I disagree with your first point. Both capable of the odd 'in the stands' failed pass, but both generally passed safe and sound. While Vidic was more relaxed and calm on the ball, Smalling has better technique and touch.
It is much easier to buy a better player than Lindelof than a player like Smalling. There is a lot of players that are better than Lindelof on the ball and also better than him at defending, without being better than Smalling.
Vidic was very underrated on the ball, he’s practically Beckenbauer in comparison to Smalling
