Having seen the disaster that was Prunier and Mal Donkey at centre back, one can happily tell you that Lindelof is a world beater in comparison. However, that doesn't put him up with the best I've seen either. Apart from his early games, I've not had a problem with him to much to be honest. Last night for me he was better than Smalling. Ignore the commentators, who all have a thing against United centre backs right now, any mistake and they bring up the fact that Jose seemingly wanted a new CB in the summer, he only had one moment where he was beaten and that was the header against a giant that even the likes of Rio, Vida and Stam would have struggled against. He kept them quiet for most of the game and helped cover the left with Shaw when Martial didn't track back.
I remember suggesting during the period after we Schmeichel left us, that any keeper we had was being compared to probably the greatest ever, and would never come close to it. Any mistake from Howard, Carroll or Barthez and we bemoaned them. I do think we (the fans) contributed to the loss of form and confidence of all 3 of them, as we didn't give them a chance. I can see similar traits happening with our centre backs now, after what was nearly 30 years of great centre back partnerships, starting with Bruce and Pallister. I'm no Smalling fan, but over the past few games even he has been decent, the partnership he's building with Lindelof is similar to that of the one he had with Blind, which was his best season he's ever had with us.
