Some of the posts on here are woeful. Feel like I'm back in the Newbies based on the reactions to his performances. Forgot how clueless the majority of the Caf is.

Has to be the worst preseason I've seen so far from a player. Wasnt expecting him to be anywhere near as good as was suggested, but hoping he can come back and do a lot better next time.

Mourinho wanted a “ball playing” centerback and he sure got one!

Yeah, for sure. Because I think Mourinho's plan is to change to a 3-5-2 why the chase of Peresic all transfer window because he's a workhorse who will run the flank down the left like Valencia does on the right and Lindelof will be the middle CB in the 3 with Rojo, Bailly.

When he has time to think he looks good, positions himself well and very calm on the ball. He's come from a league where he always has time to think. It will take a bit of time for his mind to get up to speed with the league and the rest of the team. I'll only be worried if he's still making these mistakes in January.

This thread is an absolute trainwreck. It's preseason and he's been here for like 2 weeks.

It was a terrible attempt at a tackle - the sort of thing you'd see some fat 40 year old doing on Sunday morning after 6 pints the night before. He was about 45 minutes late ffs :lol:

Still, it's only a friendly, so some of the reactions here are ridiculous. Everyone can have a brain fart from time to time.

That's nonsense.

Stam was garbage when he first joined and people were open about it. Especially after Arsenal slapped us about in the Charity Shield. It's not new to criticise poor performances.

Ultimately Stam proved he had it upstairs to play for United. Many however don't make that adjustment. There's nothing about Lindelof that suggests he's gonna end up Vidic rather than Prunier.

Gimme a break theres a difference between criticisizing a poor performance and saying he has no future at the club ir that Jose has got it wrong after a few halves of pre season

I am not writing him off but he has been awful so far in the pre season. He needs some time to step up his game from Portuguese League to English League.

I am not a fan of Smalling and Jones but one of them should partner Bailey in CB for the start of the season until Rojo is back. As for Lindelof, we need to ease him into the team as clearly (based on pre season) he isn't ready yet. Jones and Smalling performed much better than him in pre season so far.

Both of them needed time to adjust, especially Vidic. Some of our supporters have zero patience nowadays. They watch a player for a game, or at best a couple of games and he is either shit or incredibly hyped.

Yes, he had a bad game tonight, but it's far to early to make judgements.

They dont even have to be at the club yet to be criticisized. Perisic and Matic for example

I don't understand what our fans find hard in constructively criticizing a player without calling or writing him off like this. Not just this thread but other performance threads as well. The player plays one good match and he's the best in the league, one bad match and he's bang average. Black or white, never grey.

he'll be fine. he's settling in and i'd rather he make his mistakes in pre season.

Only pre-season, so no need to panic, but that doesn't mean the weaknesses can be completely ignored. Bit worrying, but at the very least, it shouldn't be difficult for him to be better than Smalling, Jones or Blind and hold the fort till Rojo comes back. The bar set by those three is very low.

The Vidic/Evra comparisons are so annoying. He deserves time obviously but lets not act as if that's the rule and not the exception. And joining a team mid-season is way more difficult than having a full pre-season together, playing against team who're in pre-season mode too. Joining in January from a new league, playing against teams already at full pace, with the high tempo the PL has, no winter break, players who've already built up their credit in the first half of the season and then trying to slot in is more difficult then joining so early in the summer.

They're right in not writing him off though, however even prior to his move, I myself have never seen why we should buy this guy from what I've seen.

I think the question to be asked is why did Theo Hernandez have that much space with Darmian and Mkhitaryan nowhere to be found.

Darmian stayed close to his mark when the ball was payed IIRC. It's Micky switched off & let his man run free. Micky has that tendency. Quite a few time last season, he didn't pressure, mark his man close enough.

Fascinating stuff reading all the reaction here

To be fair, I think everyone is expecting an Eric Bailly bedding in. Lindeof has not been great but Vida was a disaster early in his United career too.

Only pres-season and also his first few weeks at the club so kind of means nothing. Also good to get errors out of the way preseason....but he has looked utter gash tbh. Ive only seen him play once before for Sweden so dont know much about him really, but this obviously cant be the player we signed.....?

It's good that he makes some mistakes now, and not later. Had a bad match, still looks like a promise.

3 pre-season games isn't enough to write a player off but there is just something odd about his style

Seems to be very unsure of himself and always be on the back foot. Has been slow to close players down and even the tackle for the penalty he was favourite to win but seemed to slow down

Worst possible start to his career. I doubt Jose would get a defender so horribly wrong, so ill be patient with my judgement.

Maybe he's just nervous and not really the iceman people were calling.

If it's this only then no problem. He'll settle over time and will gain confidence surely as time passes. Jose needs to have some words with him.

I hope we are looking for buyers already, if we got offered £5m offer for him now we should SELL SELL SELL.

But seriously, I wouldn not pay any attention to preseason friendlies.

I am hoping this is it. It could easily be, for a defender its fine margins between a great challenge and a terrible one so any nerves really can manifest themselves more than in other positions.

Have to say though, I don't really know why we wanted a CB, unless we could sign someone proven to be world class. We actually have lots of 'good' CBs so really needed ready made quality

Jonathan Woodgate disagrees.

He played left-center because Luisão had the right-center position, but I think he played there when the Brazilian was injured, though.

He also played alittle right back so can play all those 3 spots i guess. But seems Bailly will be first choice as right centreback, but time will tell :)

Still uncertain if it is Lindelof or Smalling or even Jones (who played solid yesterday) that starts first game against West Ham with Bailly i feel.

We needed a CB because two of our existing ones can not be relied upon. However, I do agree with you, for this position we should have gone for an experienced one rather than another young prospect.

I don't mind the defensive performance, anyone can have a bad day. But that penalty was appalling. His confidence seemed shot yesterday.

I don't want to be too negative but I think it's fair to say that many of us expected him to start the season in the starting 11 but he played himself right out of it with the shocking preseason he has had. Seems we'll have to be really patient with him.

Agree, Bailly is a cert to start, probably with Smalling I would guess

It's pre-season. He's having to step up in level. He needs time. Mourinho and the coaches obviously feel he can do it.

That tackle was really stupid but to be fair, not many thought he would be a straight hit anyways. He will need more time than expected and he wont be ready for the EPL at the start of the season. Let's see where he stands come October though.

He is utter gash and we can all see it, the Swedish John Stones. Bluemoon will have a thread taking this mickey out of this guy just as we had with Stones.

The penny has dropped for some of us already but others haven't figured it out yet lmao

Did you ever see Vidic and Evra when they first arrived?

Enough said.
