VAR, Refs and Linesmen | General Discussion

Not giving a penalty is also a decision. If the referee had not given the AWB and Dalot ones then VAR would not have overturned that decision and given a penalty.

well if we say they think there’s enough to warrant a pen then they would? They’d call out the ref in edge cases so there’d still be two instances of refs to catch a penalty that might be there.

I think it’s more fair than to just give every dubious penalty

lets say they give the first pen for chelsea, then there’s less chance the second is given Id say, as the refs would think it would be a bit unfair to give 2 x 50/50 penalties in a game.

Really need to do something about the amount of tactical fouls being used to stop counter attacks all it takes is an early yellow.

If they let them slide can really change the flow of a game it’s such an effective tactic abused be so many. That was my biggest take from the Liverpool game there was some obvious challenges like this throughout the game which killed many very promising positions with zero recourse.

The AWB one is just daft from him unfortunately if you air ball a sliding tackle in the box you’re always gonna be under scrutiny, there was no way that wasn’t being given. Real time in the stadium it looked a foul 10/10 (even if it technically didn’t touch him) the problem with VAR is the whole is it a big enough error to deem it to be turned over.

How can you comprehend how serious a decision is with factors of league positions, survival, rivalry, time left on the clock nevermind on just a on field basis. it should be used wherever deemed necessary but it would kill the game.

Even with VAR the amount of incorrect small fouls or wrong throw ins/corners can still lead to a major error.

Well what choice do you have as a player, especially with English VAR, which is way too lenient? If you don´t exaggerate the contact, you´ll get nothing. He punched him, it should be a red card, whether it hurt or not.

I’d be amazed if we got three penalties in two games….let alone all three of the ones that have gone against us this week. It’s bizarre.

Ah here. I thought he did a Jonny Giles by the way everyone was banging on about it. That's the softest 'punch' I've ever seen

I'm not sure it's even a closed fist punch. You certainly can't be certain based on that footage. It's actually hilarious that the one and only time I've seen Gallagher imply that VAR fecked up it looks as though the decision was 100% correct!

The thing is, all 3 penalities looked nailed on penalites on first glance (Hell the most contentious one - Dalot's - is the one that looked the most stonewall!) - so we just got unlucky in that regard, as VAR would never overturn any of them in its current itteration.

If the ref hadn't given them on the pitch, I think the only one VAR might have given would have been AWB's.

Yeh was thinking the exact same thing. That’s never a red card, just get on with the bloody game. Nothing highlights the ineptitude of the officials more than talking points like this. They focus on this insignificant garbage while ignoring the glaring issues and poor decisions made every week.

We'd never get those...so many incidents this season that have been way worse than those given and they get brushed away. Compare the Dalot one to Gabriel wrapping up Hojlund and them not even considering it. The Cucarelo one has happened to Rashford on like 3 occassions and the refs just brush them off.

No I'm not sure it is a closed fist and there's now power behind it at all. I think the VAR got it right as it's all a bit inconclusive.

I've no idea what Gallagher's up to ever, apart from speaking out of both sides of his mouth. If you listen to it back he's still quite non-committal.

It's definitely not a red card, but on the Casmiero holding your collar spectrum, it's definitely a red card.

Or on the Martial poke on Son scale...I agree. To be fair, if I was in charge id probably let most players get away with MMA, its a cliche but top level football is so soft.

Ahh so purposefully moving your leg into a player to create contact isn’t a foul in the champions league ?

Just heard tuchel complaining about a handball that the ref said he should have given.
I didn’t see the game can anyone explain?

If Elliot’s in a pen then so is that.

Problem is, neither should be

Apologies they did address the Bayern non pen after the break.
Wtf was the ref thinking. The clearest and most obvious penalty I have ever seen. He picked the ball up when it was in play!!!! Unbelievable Jeff.

Apparently from then comments they've retrospectively Hawkeyed it and the decision was correct. However, if they truly can't tell and are 'guessing', as per the tweet, they should be sticking with the on-field decision.

Exactly yeah, massive error on protocol.
