VAR, Refs and Linesmen | General Discussion

How is Darwin still on the pitch? Should've had 3 yellows at once.

- Forcefully pushing Evans.
- Kicking away the ball after the whistle.
- Sarcastically applauding the ref.

I’d love to know the stats on how many cards have been handed out for dissent this season. I feel like United get at least two a game.

It's way up theres more already than the entirety of last season.

That Shaw one was bullshit, he'll explain it away as 2 incidents of dissent but its clearly only one and as such should only be a yellow.

Should be made to explain that sending off amd why he didn't send off Darwin in the first half for much worse.

An absolute disgrace from the ref at the end there. It should have been our throw, so we got penalised there and then double penalised with a ridiculous red card...all this on top of Nunez fouling Evans and then doing that daft applause, which is far more bookable twice than Dalot. One of those incidents where have the ability to challenge a call would have seen us get a throw and no card.

Our ability to have games reffed fairly has been out of sync with reality ever since Klopp went on that penalty rant a few seasons back.

This is even more infuriating and ridiculous given his tragic handling of Dalot. Corrupt cnut.

Michael Oliver is just a coward. There are players that he is obviously intimidated by so refuses to do his duty. But players like Dalot are easy prey because they aren't scary to him for whatever reason.

Scousers conceded 13 fouls, penalised with 2 yellow cards.
United conceded 8 fouls, penalised with 4 yellow cards and 1 red card.
Explanation required from the Geordie crook.

I actually only meant dissent too. I know United have some moany players but I would genuinely be astonished if United haven’t had way more for dissent than anybody else.

Every yellow we picked up came about from us not getting a free kick in same sequence or a goal kick he missed countless fouls on us today about 8 i counted gave us absolutely nothing.

He shouldn't be reffing any top flight games. He was too scared to give Kovacic a second yellow for a studs up challenge from behind when played City, but gives a second yellow to Dalot today

I don't think that it was totally bad game from him involving us. Sure, Liverpool got all 50/50 decisions and that Dalot red card is just phatetic. Thats it. We have been through lot worse. So I was expecting lot more. However we know how we are treated by referees. There is no need for explaination anymore. It was before. As long as we don't have mics and cam on referees this thing will keep on going.

Club should put out official statement and demand that some referees should not be in charge of our games.

Before the season it was admitted, by an official, that sometimes the officials will deliberately get decisions wrong, purely because it is easier for them.

No one made a fuss about this or seemed that bothered by it, which was strange because in any other sport and probably in any other league this would be a huge scandal and result in a big investigation, because it is literally an official openly admitting they are corrupt.

Nothing at all was said or done about it and now every week football fans are for some reason baffled at PL officials deliberately not applying rules correctly or consistently. Even though you have literally been told, by a referee, that referees do this and get away with it.

What is anyone expecting to change until you start actually calling it corrupt?

No idea how accurate this is and it doesn't include the manager cause Pep got 5 in the first 6 games but I'm pretty sure City have more than 1.

I'm glad that VAR didn't intervene for the Shaw 'handball', considering the Liverpool love-in. I think we got away with it because the ball deflected off his leg before striking his hand.

I was more surprised VAR didn't intervene and that there was only 1 replay for the challenge Amrabat made on Diaz after he missed, that one clearly showed Amrabat's studs going into Diaz's foot. We saw something similar given against Smalling with Cavani when we played Roma a few years back (though personally I thought that was a poor decision myself). Similarly, I also remember Dan James sliding in and completely taking out a Wolves player in a 0-1 away victory for us last season that went punished.

After all the VAR cock ups, it was ok last night for us.

Our cub needs to make statement about referees.

Exactly this!!! Just don’t understand why we don’t even ETH never says anything we see Arteta klopp pep all do it and get better media cover for it and definitely better decisions the following weeks.
Webb will come out with some bull and everyone will just agree and move on

It's not a magic button...How did it work out for Wolves?

We hardly have backing in the media for a public approach, so the outcome is more likely to be even further scrutiny and less situations going our way.

It's a bit like Mourinho being banned for kicking a water bottle down the touchline, while Guardiola got nothing whatsoever later on for kicking a bottle straight into the oppositions bench that was full of players.

What i fail to understand is that clubs haven't worked together to get rid of the likes of Michael Oliver, and other refs, due to them officiating in certain countries with certain direct links to certain clubs in the league. Surely other clubs must have same/similar feelings about the potential risks involved and how it undermines referees

We didn’t get away with it, the laws in England are quite clear, if it deflects off your body first, it won’t be given as handball.

sadly they don’t apply the same common sense in Europe. Anyone who thinks it was even close to a penalty needs to give their head a check

I have no hope that it would help to much. What that would mean is that we don't accept this as a club. Sometimes it is just about pointing out that we are seeing how we have been treated. That we can't have one rule for us, the other rule for other teams. We can't have similar situations in exactly same game with different outcome. We can't have same situations in different games with different outcome.

That thing about refereeing in other countries is so crazy and I can't believe that TheFA thinks it is good idea. Or accept it.

It’s actually unbelievable that, while the Negreira scandal in Spain is under investigation, we have referees who are being employed by one team’s owners, and they’re just letting them officiate that team’s games without anyone batting an eyelid.

DERMOT SAYS: "It's so so difficult because this is not an exact science.

"On the one hand, you say to me I don't want two yellow cards for Dalot, but two minutes later you say you want a yellow for Salah and three for Nunez.

"I have nowhere to go. Whichever way I jump, you will say I'm wrong.

"In the current climate the referee has no choice. I get that United fans will call for Nunez to be sent off but the referee didn't choose to do it."

Such a weird guy

Yesterday was actually a pretty straightforward game to officiate considering its often a bit fiery, Oliver actually had an easy day at the office yet still fecked it up. He's just made life harder for his colleagues, cost us a player for a game or two, and set a new precedent that says don't question or show emotion at a wrong decision in the heat of the biggest fixture in English football. Egotistical bellshaft.

You have nowhere to go because you're trying to defend the indefensible. Why can't he see this? It's ok to say the ref got it wrong!

Yes we ask for cards for Salah and Nunez only because Dalot was given TWO cards. If Dalot was given just one card, no one would be talking about Nunez or Salah even though it would have been justified to ask.

The problem is the referee didn't "jump" only on one side. He keeps jumping towards a different side to a similar situation in the same game. That's where the problem is.

I love how he creates a false narrative where people are suggesting Dalot shouldn't be booked for dissent but Nunez should, and therefore no matter what he says people will disagree with him.

Why come on a review show if all you want to do is agree with the referees decision?
It's not surprising what he said though considering he had continued to defend the decision not to give United that penalty against Spurs even after Arsenal got one against Spurs for the exact same thing.

It’s so weird. It’s like he’s painted himself into a corner but refuses to acknowledge he was the one holding the paintbrush. “You see, I appear to have been painted into a corner here. How unfortunate. Really nothing I could have done to avoid this.”
