VAR and Refs | General Discussion

Arsenal fans still crying about a match from 20 years ago.

Where are the 4 red cards they mention, I can only see 1 in the video?

Imagine still being rattled over this. There was a mistake, but it’s hardly Ovrebo against Chelsea bad.

The Ruud one I’ll give them, that’s a red. Pre Var these were missed all the time. But Ljungberg needed to be stronger, Neville’s challenges were the sum of one yellow, and the pen isn’t even the worst dive I’ve seen this weekend. Campbell hangs a lazy leg out, impedes rooney and he’s entitled to go over it.

TBH the likes of Norman Hunter, Ron Harris, Tommy Smith would call even this periods players a bunch of pansies!

Yeah, even my father who grew up watching those guys said the players we grew up watching were soft.

He often comment about whether or not a player would stand a chance against Chopper or Hunter.

20 years later, I'm saying the same thing.

Wasn’t there also an absolute blatant one on Ronaldo by Cole that gets conveniently ignored?

TBH I'm surprised that most of them could actually walk after playing a game!

Ever watched the 1970 FA cup final replay? Brutal game with two of the hardest teams around … Chelsea Leeds.

David Elleray (who I thought was ok) re-reffed it and said he’d have given six red cards. Michael Oliver later re-reffed and said he’d have given eleven (rules tightened?)

The actual ref was given the match as a reward for his impending retirement … he gave one yellow.

Aye, a game played by two teams hellbent on kicking each other off the pitch. Obviously the rules have tightened up, but you do have some recent outliers like the 2010 WC final. Or in 2006 between Portugal and Holland.

Why is it such a big deal? I’m sure some refs thought SAF was a complete cnut. It’s not a big deal, I can totally see how SAF could not be everyone’s cup of tea. Liverpool fans should stop being so pretentious and take off their red tinted glasses.

You don't see why this is a big deal?

Use your imagination Brian.

I think so, I didn’t even mention stuff that should’ve gone for us. other fans act like the reason we’re shit now is because we don’t have Ferguson keeping the refs in his pocket. When actually, we are in fact shit. Just as back then we were mint.

So they just reviewed the DeLigt penalty against West Ham on Match Officials Mic’d Up. Webb does not think it should be given and the “VAR” officials focused too much on the contact by DeLigt.

Was quite obvious when you see how many times they had to watch it, and how many times he keeps repeating to the onfield official that there is contact by DeLigt. On field official is saying knee-to-knee contact, but VAR keeps repeating that there is contact by DeLigt. They then say more contact by DeLigt than Ings. It’s comical that they still felt this was a clear and obvious Error.

Was watched but the VAR and the onfield official about 5 times each before they made their decision.

Interesting. Does Webb mention an apology to United?

No, he doesn’t mention any apology. But he does make a point to say the VAR (Michael Oliver) is a good ref that is very competent. I thought that was interesting that he felt the need to add that, considering he would be aware of the blow back of the calls he’s made in recent years.

Watching the clip, you can see from the other angle that De Ligt hits the ball and you can hear Oliver realise it. He then skips back to the other angle and goes “that’s it that’s the angle, there’s no contact from De Ligt there”. When he shows Coote the clip and he says “is that it? That’s the only angle you have got?” Oliver replies “yeah sorry that’s the best we have got” which is a clear and obvious lie.

Oliver knew exactly what he was doing.

Do you have a link to the audio?

The two opportunities we've had to get insight into how these 'professionals' think and both times it's been one nutter pushing an agenda with tunnel vision to feck us over

One nutter pushing an agenda and the guy who’s supposed to be making the decision being unbelievably passive. He asked one question, didn’t get an answer and left it at that. Incredible. The difference between this and rugby is mental. There’s no communication or discussion at all. Just one or two phrases yapped back and forth at each other.

I love how Coote just keeps repeating that it’s a coming together while Michael Oliver repeates contact by De Ligt and then Coote just goes «so it’s a penalty»

No wonder it took so long for the audio to come out.

15 times he watched it before reluctantly giving a pen. On 5 occasions the ref makes statements or asks questions which clearly suggest he's not convinced by what he's being shown. On each occasion Oliver shuts him down, leaving no room for Coot to make any call other than what Oliver clearly wants. He asks for other angles, not provided. He voices his doubts, but no, Oliver is totally guiding him to the decision by giving no ground at all. Oliver repeats that no contact on the ball is made by De Ligt, despite the fact that this angle suggests that it does, AND that it's unclear whether Ings touches it before it bounces up and hits his hand.

Oliver should be made to pay for this clear corruption. There can be no other explanation for such a ridiculous call in these circumstances with the way it played out.

Everything about that is so stupid. But the most stupid of all is surely the way that they conclude “knee on knee contact, more of it from De Ligt” which can only be an opinion formed because Ings goes down like a sack of shit and De Ligt doesn’t. So we have two professional referees deciding that the reason a striker falls over in the box and not the defender can only be because he comes out worse in a 50:50.

Honestly you'd be annoyed if that free kick was given against you in the centre circle.

For it to be given as a penalty, by VAR, is truly ridiculous... I said at the time, you have to question the judgement of a professional referee if he thinks that's a foul after getting to see multiple replays, as it heavily implies he doesn't know what actually constitutes a foul.
