VAR, Refs and Linesmen | General Discussion

Opportunity #857 for you Erik. Say something !

Absolutely ridiculous. 101 minutes played, a blatant dive as a pen and yellows flying our way. Nice try having an impact on the result by the ref.

The Gallagher one is probably a harder call than Nkunku. Maybe why it wasn't given.

The Nkunku one is blatant.

Problem is I don't have a leg to stand on when Jota gets one like he did in the Newcastle game.

In real time it’s probably not an easy one to give but I think with the benefit of several replays, which VAR had, I think the Gallagher one was very clear. What’s crazy is the Jota penalty in this same game was similar to the Nkunku one but one was waved away and checked and confirmed as not a foul while the other was given instantly without hesitation.

Whoever was the only field Ref, he was terrible. Couldn't wait to take out the cards for ManUtd players and nothing for Wolves.

It's ok. Nunez new that and missed on purpose...

10 fouls each, we get 5 yellows to their 2.

9 mins added time…

There was the penalty check that took 3mins from being given to being scored and then 4 sub stoppages which are 30 seconds each. 3 goals at 30 seconds each so 6 mins 30. Where an additional 2mins 30 come from I have no idea.

Onana got a (harsh) yellow so going to add on a bit for that. Was expecting 6-7 but something like 9 minutes remains very excessive unless there's a serious injury to add to the mix.

Of course if it's 4-5 added on the ref blows up pretty soon after the Neto goal so sometimes it does have its benefits....

I didn't catch the game yesterday. Were they given on field and then over turned? Or not given on field? Think that makes a difference here.
They can give penalty. They don’t need to give. It is all about choice. Yesterday there were penalties for Gallagher, Chillwell and Nkunku. Instead they found one on Jota. Ridiculous.

You just know Tierney's email password contains the letters Y N W A in sequence.
When I saw him watching that screen I knew. There is no way he would give anything to us. I can’t understand that our club haven’t released statement that we don’t want that guy near our games and that we want transparency for our games. Why do we get crazy decisions against us.

It’s quite clear to me now that the Premier League requires controversy. Huge talking points have always been part and parcel of football, and they won’t let that change. Heck, can you imagine if every decision was correct? It’d be as boring as rugby.

That’s the only way I can explain what we’re seeing. Clear pens not given in some games, clear dives not punished in others. Bizarre offsides, all the handball shenanigans we’ve had in recent years. It’s all essential to the product, and now they’ve even added lottery stoppage time for one more talking point.

Not a stretch to say the commentators have been told to tow the company line, too. All they ever say is “what an advert for the Premier League” etc., with no criticism of the frequent shambolic decisions.

Should just go after them on social media for giving us 9 mins with laughing emojis and replays of Mainoo’s goal. Corrupt fecks.

Constantly takes the shine off even the most dramatic game. Just an obscene level of influence on matches, even when flagrantly wrong. It completely removes the idea of 'sporting competition' or 'may the best team win'. That man shouldn't be near the premier league and it really is that simple.

I’m genuinely shocked at the level of analysis for the Neto dive.
“Yes, there was barely any contact. Yes, he makes the most of it. But it was never going to be overturned.” That’s quite fecked up to be honest. Usually they over analyse using slow motion. We saw a new low today where a still image of the contact was used to tag this into the lack of clear and obvious bucket. Dives are being rewarded with validation. Shameful, really.

Where did he get the 9 minutes from!

It did seem very excessive but I think it was said at the start of the season they add on a minute for goal celebrations now compared to the standard 30 seconds.

Dawson should have been off for his challenge on Hojlund. Two arms like a fecking Randy Savage double axe handle straight through the back of Hojlund. Bottled.

I just hate how many absurdly soft pens are given, for minimal contact and nothing handball calls. We have conditioned fans and players to call for things that would get you laughed off your local pitch, looking at super slow replays of inconsequential contact and talking it into a penalty in general perception. Never a pen, but as soon as VAR looked at it it was inevitable that the minuscule contact they saw would not mean it being changed.

Whole thing is a circus.

Onana got a yellow for time wasting and Shaw for kicking the ball away. So 3 yellows to there 2 for 10 fouls each.

Agree with the added minutes though not sure where 9 minutes come from, sure glad it did though.

Think the ref was fine in all honesty other than the penalty, which was a genuine mistake that VAR allowed because the slightest bit of contact means it can't be clear and obvious even though it is clearly and obviously a dive and not a penalty.

Same guy in the VAR room, too.

It’s mad. I’m not that livid about those decisions yesterday because I felt we deserved to lose because we were pathetic but it’s still kinda jarring to see.

Howard Webb has been on the 'Officials Mic'd Up' program saying they were going to start asking referees what they think they've seen...

Surely in this scenario, VAR ask him what he's seen, referee says contact from Casemiro causing Wolves attacker to fall, VAR say that's not what's happened and overturn.

We are now at the stage where ANY contact is now a VAR-certified penalty if you fall to the floor afterwards.

I dont mind the ANY contact rule if its applied consistently to every team

It's incredible that that pen was given. All those replays showed was that there wasn't any contact... how can they actually call that?

There should be a review of VAR calls in relation to Liverpool. I think if you took them out of the picture, it doesn't look so inconsistent

In the var room could they not have ex players who know the game and know what’s basically conning a ref and what’s not

Just proves how in football you must stand up against ref. Klopp attacked Tierney last year. And look what happened? Two pens not given

Add the whole refereeing team tonight (especially Tierney and his double standards) to Oliver, Anthony Taylor and many others to the list of anti United referees

why are we the only club in the league that has absolutely no spine about this. we could fully release a properly made compilaion of about 20 inexplicably bad calls against us this season. Chris fecking Wilder was suggesting theres a consipracy against sheffield united! Klopp has ensured liverpool wont get a call against them again. City have had about 2 bad calls against them in 6 years.

Some random australian idiot was drafted in why? He's so clearly incompetent and nobody is supposed to say it?

Those sandwich-eating, corrupt officials!

At the end of the day, the conspiracy stuff just sounds idiotic. It's just incompetence.

Time for teams to hire diving coaches. I think Nkunku's dive was too obvious. How is a kick from behind going to make you jump and fall like that? Rookie mistake. Wolves have far more seasoned divers.

None of us are ex players and we can see the ineptitude. It shouldn’t be necessary. These are supposed to be professionals and the best in the business.
