VAR and Refs | General Discussion

I’ll say it again, people saying Casemiro was a red hasn’t been watching football. They just aren’t given

Could be a blessing in disguise. Finish them off tonight and we've avoided the risk of him getting a suspension for the first semi.
Better safe than sorry, though. You always want your players available for a knockout tie, and to miss one because of that is so annoying. Like you say, though, we will hopefully Betis them here so it's not as costly as it potentially could be.

Tonight's ref

In 2005, Zwayer was involved in the match fixing scandal which centered around 2. Bundesliga referee Robert Hoyzer, who took bribes to fix several matches which he officiated. Zwayer assisted him in a match and accepted a bribe of 300 euros to avoid critical scenes for Wuppertaler SV.

Of course, you're absolutely right. This match (and tie) feels like one we should be able to put to bed early though. Bruno getting a rest will also be more than welcome. But of course this is not done yet. Hoping for a strong second half to finish this off.

It's what I was worried about, mate. It's bad enough losing Rashford and Martinez to injury (& maybe Varane) but we've got to go to Seville without Bruno, too. All because of that ridiculous yellow card.

Not ideal, I agree. But we had so many chances to kill the tie before they scored the first one.

There must come accountability now with var. We should demand their demotion. The decision changed the whole tie.

The handball and yellow card was hard to believe. At absolute worst give a free kick for it (though I'm not sure where else his arm is supposed to go there) but a yellow was mad, especially one that bans him for the return leg.

The studs on Casemiro could have easily been a red card, it looks worse and more deliberate than the foul which Cas just served a 4 match ban for. The failed overhead kick which ended up kicking Casemiro in the head, I don't see how that isn't a red card? How can you be allowed to take a wild, late swipe at the ball and end up kicking someone (who wasn't lowering their head) in the face, and it not be a red?

I personally think all tribalism in football should be set aside when it comes to outrageous VAR and refereeing decisions.

What happened against Tottenham last week was a disgrace to English football. It’s all very well opposition fans yukking it up, but when it happens to them, they’ll be complaining as much as anyone else.

Last week was a disgrace, football briefly stood together in protest (minus, sadly, most Spurs fans) - the same should happen for every club who are cheated out of results.

Away to Chelsea today, expecting the PGMOL apology (our fourth of the season) has already been drafted. Disgraceful.

Agree with you. There's a lot of rot in our refereeing and VAR thanks to Riley. I genuinely think Webb is doing what he can so far, sacking the VAR refs who are making mistakes and making sure procedures are followed properly.

We've only had one VAR go for us that I can think of. The "foul" on Mendy v West Ham. We've also been done by Spurs this season, in the home game against them with the Cucu hair pull being ignored.

Brighton have lost 11 points from decisions that PGMOL have recognised are incorrect. This is a record. It’s astonishing and if it had happened to a bigger club, there would be banners/marches/protests. We just don’t have that level of support/anger because so many Brighton fans are just gobsmacked we have come so far as a club.

Very bad feeling about today. Another very dramatic day, I suspect- sadly.

I`d be livid if that Maguire VAR «no handball» penalty review had been the other way around. Was certain that would be given. He extends his arm to push another player,

How's that not a handball by Maguire? He literally blocks the cross with his hand before it falls to a Forest player and the cross didn't deflect from anything.

We definitely got away with it. It’s one that gets given in one game and then in the same weekend it isn’t.

Terrible decision, I thought it should have been easy penalty. They probably thought it didn't give us advantage or whatever the new rule for handball is this week.

Because it’s not a handball? His arm isn’t even high, it just drops on it.

Yeah, has to be said that we were very lucky with that one.

However, I imagine that it'll be the news story for the rest of the week like last time and we'll get another half dozen decisions go against us with zero media pandemonium.

Not handball for me, it would’ve been harsh.

I guess the refs dont like Forest much either. Clear pen. Do we have any other CB's? Kind of expecting a potential second yellow at this point.

I think the reason it wasn’t given as a penalty is that he has headed it onto his own arm. I think the rules say if it comes off another body part onto the arm then it’s not handball. Was feeling a little lucky with that one nonetheless.

I’d say his arm is in natural position being held up by other players. Arms out when you jump, then it gets hooked on other players which takes it into the ball.

That makes sense. Didn't notice the header

He heads it on to his own arm, while holding off a player.

Does Newcastle not have a forum? Never understand why someone would post on a other teams forum. Are you a Manchester utd supporter really?

Some people enjoy different perspectives, it’s really not that weird.

It is, is there no perspectives in the newcastle forums? Everyone has a perspective.

I find it weird, where as you don't - that is perspective.

I don't think it hits Maguire's head at all.

I thought this place was friendly to other clubs fans too? Newcastle has an active forum but talking with only like minded fans can easily turn into an echo chamber. And in that Newcastle forum many fans of other clubs are the most liked posters that have been there for ages. This forum seems to have a nice mix of supporters from all over the world and it's well moderated compared to Twitter/Reddit or any other social media. Reading posts from different perspectives is a richness IMO, sad if you don't see it that way and feel the need to attack someone who sees something differently.

I didn't attack anyone, just asked a question.

I'm not on twitter or any other social media, I don't like point scoring it's pointless and a waste of time. Didn't mean to upset.

I'm not upset but this seemed pretty aggressive to me:

"Does Newcastle not have a forum? Never understand why someone would post on a other teams forum. Are you a Manchester utd supporter really?"

Sorry if I took that wrong.
