Van Der Vaart On The Move

Not included in their Europa League Squad. If we needed an extra man in January we could do a lot worse

To be fair, he wouldn't get near our starting eleven at the moment. I have become less and less convinced by him - the more that I have watched him.

Where would we give him games though? we have quite a few strikers of our own. he'd be on high wages too.

Have they missed him because of the injury? Or because they don't want to use their best players in a competition they don't care about?

I really don't understand Redknapp's stance - fight all year for a European place, then describe it as an 'annoyance' the following year.

If we do need an extra man we probably shouldn't be targetting a lazy, unfit primadonna who's no longer wanted at Spurs.

I agree with this current opinion. But the hope would be a move to Utd would inspire him, just as we saw with his 1st 6 months at Spurs and Madrid he does make a good start.

I can only wonder at how you've managed to reach this bizarre conclusion ....

Well that would be because someone told me that he's not included in the Europa squad. You know, the post I responded to?

If there's more to it than that then I wouldn't know about it. I haven't been following Spurs very closely this season. Not all that bothered about the fortunes of mid-table clubs tbh.

He's out for six weeks after tearing his hamstring I think, so the reasoning probably is he'll miss 3 of the games anyway, and there must be doubts about whether he can play more than 1 game a week. It's not because they don't want him at the club.

He's being injury prone most of the time he's been at Tottenham. Thing is when he plays he tends to make an impact.

He's injured for quite some weeks, no? Might be the reason not to include him.

I think they'll do fine without VDV and since he doesn't even manage to play Premier League week in week out without getting injured, I'd say it's useless to include him in a European squad. The PL is much more important for Spurs I'd guess.

So, a qiuck google reveals that VdV is, predictably enough, throwing a strop about this.

However, after seeing specialist Dick van Toorn in his homeland, Van der Vaart is confident that he will be back in action much sooner than expected, and could possibly even play in this Sunday's Barclays Premier League match against Liverpool at White Hart Lane.

In a section headlined 'annoying' on his personal website, Van der Vaart wrote: 'I still think it's a peculiar situation.
'Spurs could at least have consulted me. Anyway it's up to the point of no return. I will be focusing on the game against Liverpool.

Vaart needs to accept Spurs is his level.

He comes across as a lad who wakes up everyday feeling great shame he's not at a bigger club.

I think he would be a good squad player for any top club.

I'm not sure that's true though.

Van Der Vaart might've been told 'you're not a regular starter' and interpreted it in his own way, while Tevez has been told the same thing, and it's just because there are better players ahead of them both.

I think the situations are likely to be fairly similar.

Who is a better player ahead of VDV?

VDV was playing behind the main striker, which is where Defoe played last game but he's not behind Defoe, he started all the games till he was injured. He always had Modric and someone else behind him, it's not like he's competing with Modric.

I would think he'd still be first choice to play in the hole with Adebayor ahead and Modric and Parker behind.

If that centre line-up can click this season, then they could derfinitely be in with a chance at 4th spot! Modric (if his head is in it) and Parker are pure consistency. It's more Adebayor and VDV that can drift in and out of a season.

That post was made when VDV was at Madrid!

I do wonder whether having VDV hinders them in some ways though, whether they'd just be better off going 433 with Sandro, Parker and Modric as the middle three.

That's a very weak line of reasoning.

It's pretty obvious that he isn't in the Europa group phase squad simply because Harry wants to focus on the league and save VdV for that .... and to play several youngsters in the Europa.

But no, you jump to the bizarre conclusion that VdV - the guy who was our top scorer last season - is suddenly no longer wanted by the club.

:wenger:

Yeah, silly me. I should have realised it was a typically comedic bit of idiocy from the Spurs management team, as outlined in the Daily Mail article above. If in doubt, go with Spurs doing something stupid.

 Nice one me.

I was excited at the idea they might play Modric either in the hole or as the attacking midfielder in a 433 when VDV went down. But from the games I watched last year, VDV was really the only one who could reliably put the ball in the net, Modric included.

If it wasn't for Redknapp being a bit daft I think we'd see more 433, with VDV perhaps as a playmaking winger ala David Silva, in the tougher games.

I'd play kids in the Europa League if I was him, though, points in the EPL are just too valuable to worry about a nothing trophy worth little money to the club.

Why is it stupid to give a chance to some Spurs youngsters in the Europa group phase?

Why is it stupid to save VdV for league matches for the time being?

Why is it stupid for the manager (and not the players) to decide which players should play in which matches?

If Spurs reach the later stages of the Europa competition, then perhaps Harry will decide to commit a few more senior players - including VdV - to the competition. But until then VdV's ommission makes obvious good sense.

The difference in money in getting CL football and not getting it is huge. I'm sure Harry is thinking he's going to treat this like the CC so that it doesn't impact his first team and cause them to either lose players to injury or lose stamina from playing 2 games a week.

What does look stupid is a player who already has a dodgy reputation making remarks like that on his website.

Why is it that United are so good at running a smooth show, keeping all incidents 'in-house' and avoiding this kind of shambles, whereas everyone else constantly has to deal with stuff like this?

As much as you're no doubt inclined to defend anything to do with Spurs, you can't tell me this looks good.

You don't even have to register youngsters to play them in Europe, anyone below 21 can be registered on B list and therefore occupy a completely different slot than VDV would.

Not to mention Europa League is your only realistic chance of silverware this season. You're very unlikely to win League Cup, even less likely to win The FA Cup and both are honestly less prestigious than winning something in Europe even if it's only Europa League. You also have absolutely no chance of finishing in top 4 in the league so if I were you I'd definitely put more emphasis on Europa League which is your best bet, especially as there aren't any big clubs in the competition this year.

You think Liverpool and Arsenal are so much better that Spurs can't get 4th?

I think they're the underdogs, but far from impossible.

Liverpool will be far more consistent this season with the team they have got. Spurs need a lot of luck to get the fourth place.

I dont think VDV will stay at Spurs, he has got Liverpool written all over him. My money is on him landing there.

liverpool squad ain't all that great, spurs and arsenal still have hope for 4th.

'Arry doesn't care about Europa I'd imagine. He wants the CL again so he'll concentrate on the league.

Any way, if/when they get out of the group stage, they can add three more people which is when a fit VdV will join.

Still baffling to me.

Yes. Arsenal don't really have a much superior squad but they will finish ahead of Tottenham on the virtue of them being Arsenal and other team being Tottenham. Liverpool are much more solid and I expect them to be consistent. They only finished behind Tottenham last year because of a home defeat late on, and I don't think Liverpool will again be as bad as they were last term.

There's no chance Tottenham will play in CL again in the next five years I reckon.
