Van Der Vaart On The Move

Doesn't matter that much if Bale were to want to leave.

I didn't say Bale couldn't force a move, so please don't put words in my mouth.

No need to put anything in your mouth, it's already there.
But even if he did want to leave, he could only force it through IF Spurs got a massive pay-off - just as happened with Berbatov. Berbatov virtually went on strike and had far less time remaining on his contract than Bale. That didn't stop Levy refusing to sell until the 11th hour, when 30.25m was finally offered and accepted for a player who was, at the time, 6 years older than Bale is now.

Or Bale can quite happily rot in the reserves in order to secure a move to say Real Madrid a year down the line. He's got time on his side after all.

I say again, for a club that doesn't want to sell and doesn't need the cash, the price would be whatever Spurs say it is, take it or leave it. And you can bet your bottom dollar that the price would be massive.

It'd be just the same for Bale, except this time you could forget any bids that didn't start at well over 30m and proceed rapidly northwards from there. Don't think he's worth it? Fine. you don't have to think he's worth it: what you might think he's worth and what you'd have to pay to get him are two entirely different things ... and a lot of Caftards seem unable to grasp this reality.

 Conjecture. I think you underestimate Levy's flexibility. He's a pretty tough negotiator, but when you got him up against the wall he caves just like anyone else. I admit it's tricky to get him there.

Anyway, this is getting boring.

Apparently he turned down Liverpool too, good man:

Rafael van der Vaart has revealed that he chose to join Tottenham despite a late offer from Liverpool (and not Bayern Munich, as was reported). Excellent choice, sir.

Van der Vaart told Sky Sports News: “Liverpool were interested. Bayern were not interested.

“In the end you have to have a good feeling, and with this manager I got a good feeling. I am happy and I am going to Spurs.

“I am going to give it my best and hopefully I will play a lot of games and be important for the team. I hope to get a lot of goals and have a lot of fun.”

VdV is also looking forward to seeing if his compatriots in the Premier League have overhyped English football.

“They were always telling me, ‘You have to come to England!’” he said.

“Now it’s happened and I am really looking forward to playing against Dirk (Kuyt), against Nigel (De Jong), against (John) Heitinga.”

Surprise surprise, Harry was talking bollocks about Bayern.

left wing? if you could sign him for cheap then he may well be worth having I'd have thought

His best football last season was when he played in behind Crouch, also where Rooney played his best football for us.

If SAF wanted him we would have got him for 8M last season..

Could be that he may be thinking of moving Rooney to midfield into Scholes' position. With his tackling, tracking back and distribution facing goal, Rooney is a born replacement, i've thought that for years.
VDV infront of him, Young, Valencia/Nani and Hernandez, that's pretty good on paper.

Every single time.

Rooney is not a CM. Will never be.

Why not? He has everything he needs for it. What's missing?

He has never played in that position. Based on what you said, why can't he play RB?

He isn't a great tackler. Doesn't have the required discipline.

Plus, did you see his performances over the 2nd half of the last season?? Why, why would we move him to CM?

Yeah i'd agree on that, but he spends half the time there anyway, so another top player in front or playing off him would be pretty dangerous i'd have thought.

Positioning ? Tackling ? Consistent passing ?

Rooney is a good passer, but he's no Scholes.

Its all about discipline, not in terms of keeping a lid on his anger, but movement around the pitch.

Rooney is a great forward because he's a top finisher, but also be cause he's prepared to come deep and pick up the ball. His movement is key and the freedom he's given allows him to be the player he is.

No doubt he would be a half decent midfield player - as would most players witha good skill set, but playing away from his natural position he won't have the same effect on the game.

Pointless trying to fit square pegs into round holes when you can go out and buy the player you want for the position you want.

I too think he is a born central midfield. But as it stands he's missing the discipline to stay put. If you put him a CM you would expect him playing as a winger, a striker, and a defender at the same time. He's a born winner and will chase balls wherever they go. It'd take years to erase that instinct.

Which reiterates the point - why would one wish to 'erase that instinct'?

Painfully self-indulgent last night. All those pointless long-shots and never even attempted to help his midfield partner out with the dirty work. You can see why he so rarely finishes games. Definitely a luxury player. Becoming more and more apparent why none of the big clubs were in for him.

How dare you... He was available for 8 mill. Bargain. Value. Our Midfield is shit. Carrick sucks.

I can't imagine what the Berba haters would think of that cnut if he played for us. As you said, there's a reason he went to Spurs for £8m. Also the fact they were praising him like crazy last night for losing weight is pretty amazing. He's a footballer, ffs, he should be able to finish games.

He was fecking awful last night.

He's still the same player I remember from Madrid. Looks great when things are going well, useless when they aren't. In the big games and the hard ones, he veers between invisible and oblivious - last night we saw Mr Oblivious, no sense, no judgment.

I can't believe he's what we need, unless SAF has some psychologist's report that says he can be hypnotised into something better. At 28 I don't hold out that much hope for him.

Of course if we buy him, I'll change my mind. ;)

And you can see why Harry's gone and bought Diarra and Sandro.

I have never seen him as a midfielder. He's a second/shadow striker who prefers to play in the hole.

The reason he was shite is because he had absolutely no support. Their central midfielders are ghastly. Huddlestone, Palacious, Modric, Sandro - those are your central midfield players and do the dirty work.

Plus, it must be disheartening to look up and find only Defoe who is covered by Jones and Evans - you aren't getting the ball to him at all. Defoe is not a lone striker and when VDV had to drop deeper to get the ball, it pushed him out of position and isolated people even more.

Their only hope was down our flanks and why Bale didn't have a proper long distance go at Smalling, I'll never know. Smalling isn't as fast as Bale and if Bale could do his trademark kick it in front and chase, he'd of given us far more problems. As it stood, him and Lennon both had to drop deep to cover.

The first half was a complete game of chicken: We went forward at a risk for counter attack (which we were a couple times) - they'd creep forward and we'd counter. The chicken game was who was more daring to press their top three the furtherest. We won the chicken game by scoring first and the rest was history.

They need a Forlan, Falcao, Adebayor, Drogba - someone who can actually hold up the ball and give players a target. And they need their starting central midfielders back.

Uhmm...

It will probably do them a favour and allow them to move back to 442.

They could either go with:

Lennon Huddlestone Modric Bale
-------- Adebayor Defoe

or

Huddlestone Parker
Lennon Modric Bale
------ Adebayor

They won't miss him IMO.

This was probably the wrong thread to bump, sorry.

That's not a bad idea, putting Modric in the hole, I take it that's what they've done in the past?

Am I the only person that would rather play Pienaar than Lennon? Nice last name, seems rather pointless as a footballer.
