Well this is just ridiculous. I appreciate he's the whipping boy at the moment but until this season our defending with him in the team was 1000 times better than without him in the team.

You have to remember we’ve experienced CBs like Stam, Ferdinand and Vidic. And captains like Robson, Cantona and Keane. So we’re very clear-sighted regarding the standard required in those roles to compete at the highest level. And it’s painfully clear that our £80 million man just isn’t anywhere near it. He’s not going to be automatically respected because a poor manager bizarrely made him captain.

I wouldn't say he looks that bad. Plenty of 38 year old's look like that. Very few 50 year old's look like that. But yes he's let himself go a bit. Then you could compare him to Rooney who is 2 years younger and looks worse.

I remember the circumstances that supported this madness very vividly. Ballplaying CB was supposedly what was holding us back from playing high line swashbuckling football and Maguire was the final puzzle piece like VVD did for Liverpool. It was presented as some no-brainer decision to stop negotiating and "pay Leicester the bloody money". Signed by ours truly, transfer muppets who never saw him play.

He's absolutely right. It's funny how some of you are so quick to jump on Maguire's defence. At this moment, in his current form, i'm not even sure a Championship club would take him. Leicester certainly won.t And given the money the club has spent on his transfer and wages... let's just say that calling him shit is relatively polite.

Not true. He was almost as bad in his first season and was pretty poor until Dec last season. Thereafter he was generally pretty decent til the end of the season.
That " unvarnished opinion " would have saved us a lot of trouble had it been shared by our manager at the time.
Fred is shyte. So are Mctominay, Maguire and Lingard. But they d still be the best player ( or thereabouts ) at a mid/bottom PL teams. But in as far as challenging for honours is concerned, they re massively under-skilled for that level, hence the shite argument.

That did not happen. A few good EURO games filled us with hope he'd finally settle in, but that was clearly a false dawn.

No he hasn’t. He hasn’t been an £80m defender but that isn’t his fault, and personally I think any CB would have struggled in the setup we’ve had. He’s been decent and he’s been our best CB since he came. He’s not the worlds greatest CB, but he’s not shit either. Maguire is just the latest in a long line of scapegoats and fall guys.
