This guy is running unopposed for the local school board.

It's depressing hearing some of the shit coming out of the mouths of people voting Romney... from the Republicans I've spoken to, there is grievous ignorance of the policies of both parties, as well as misinformation and misinterpretations of the past four years of politics and the economy, both in America and on the global scale.

There are wankers on all sides. It's easy to find a bunch of idiots voting for idiotic reasons for every candidate.

The way forward isn't to point out the unfortunates, it's to try and work with the more sensible ones and come together where we can agree on something reasonable.

well put Grin.

I have said the same stuff. When I spoke to my boss today aboutthe elections, his fear was that the moderates on both sides were being 'forced out' so to speak.

That is true...think on our side there less bluedogs around and for them it is very obvious the teabaggers/religious types have taken over.

But if Bohner brings legislation that he thinks will have support across both parties, then perhaps we can get somewhere.

He needs to have the guts to know that not all on his party will vote for the bill....but that it will have bipartisan support.

I find it hard why in the US there never has been viable 3,4 or 5 parties

Because of the way the electoral college works. You can get millions of votes and not have a single electoral vote. Makes it very tough for a newcomer to make any impact.

At Presidential level it just doesn't really work with anything but 2, with the electoral college being a winner takes all contest. I'm not sure why there aren't more third parties/indies at congressional level though, it would seem the best way to build up.

Because while we're demographically diverse, electorally, not so much. Even when one party runs hard to the right like the GOP has, the response from the other party is to grab for the center. There's just not that much room in the middle, and running outside the middle is rarely a winning gambit.

a third party candidate only helps one or the other.

think we are stuck with the 2 party system.

too much vested power in both parties.

Not necessarily, there's a good variety of them this time round. Gary Johnson/Virgil Goode will be taking some votes away from the GOP, as will Jill Stein/Rocky Anderson from the Dems.

If you're not living in a swing state then there's no harm in voting 3rd party, it'll at the very least send a strong message to the establishment.

It won't, really.

Some rumours of low turnout in some key dem, and high in gop areas in Ohio.

Probably twitter bullshit.

Though florida looks promising for Obama.

Yeah I guess that makes sense, there's less of a party platform than there is over here.

I'm reading that they're on track to surpass 08 in Cuyahoga and Franklin, but haven't done so yet.

EDIT - just Cuyahoga actually, can't find any mention of Franklin now I look back.

It certainly does if they reach the 5% vote level. I believe then they qualify for matching funds and whatnot which would help for the next time around and so on. Until they can get some mass publicity they will remain irrelevant.
