Kerry was a very weak POTUS candidate tbf, but he was running against Bush, the ex-Alcoholic, globally naive, strategically manipulatable son of a former President & part of a Dynasty only equatable with the Kennedy & Clintons who was clearly elevated to office by his family wealth and connections. Neither side could've run with the "out of touch" stuff without shooting themselves in the foot.
That said, the right wing really tried to get him on his War record, which was frankly astonishing considering he was a three time Purple Heart winning soldier and Bush was a veritable draft dodger...So, you know, if anything's devious, it's that.
