Actually the number required reduces if someone is absent, so if 10-15 Republicans were indeed absent he could win, not likely to happen thoughHe needs 218 and has been getting around 212.
I believe 5 or so Republicans are out today for personal reasons. Although I would be shocked if the Rs don't somehow recognize the numbers and allow Jeffries to win.
Progress, not perfection. That's it then. 5 have voted no

There is about precisely zero chance Jeffries becomes speaker, people needs to stop holding out hope for that.

I don't think anyone believes it. The best the Dems can do is to strike a deal with McCarthy to get some confessions in exchange for committee/rules changes that favor the Dems. Short of that, I think they will keep at it for McCarthy into next week. If he continues to fail, they will eventually move to Scalise.
No need for Dems to support any Republican, it is GOP’s responsibility to find a way here. The only way Dems should support McCarthy is if they get written guarantees to co-lead committees and that he won’t ever use majority of majority rule.I disagree, McCarthy isn't worth supporting anyway, nor can you trust him, he has been pandering to the extremists, so let him keep at it.
Dems could support a better, more trustworthy republican for speaker, however.

They don't have any leverage at the moment since McCarthy is gaining momentum in this vote. He has peeled off a handful of no votes and is getting close his magic number.
So? The goal was never to support McCarthy regardless.
He is living on borrowed time anyway, next debt ceiling will be the end for him as speaker, if not earlier, he has given a lot of promises and will be removed if he acts outside of that.
13 flipped. This changes the dynamic
Fourteen now.
Why is Jefferies at 211? Did a Dem go home?
They flipped?!? No doubt they were insane.McCarthy must've made insane concessions to get the likes of Scott Perry and Paul Gosar to flip.

How does that work though? Would he need a majority of the House to vote to approve the change from majority to plurality? Would the Dems do that if it came down to a vote? From what I see, he could now vote to have majority decide, because he has - for the first time - more votes than Jeffries

Of the seven crazies who would even vote present to make thus go through... I'm sure he needs to flip about 3 or 4 of themBoebert and Gaetz must be bricking it right about now. Hopefully they are not included in any committee assignments.

Gaetz was talking with Gosar who completely blanked him when his name was called to vote & walked down the aisle a bit to yell out ‘McCarthy.’Yes.
Who is the third crazy after Boebert and Gaetz? There are at least 3 that are not flippable imo.
