He needs 218 and has been getting around 212.

I believe 5 or so Republicans are out today for personal reasons. Although I would be shocked if the Rs don't somehow recognize the numbers and allow Jeffries to win.
Actually the number required reduces if someone is absent, so if 10-15 Republicans were indeed absent he could win, not likely to happen though

There is about precisely zero chance Jeffries becomes speaker, people needs to stop holding out hope for that.

It is funny that there are republicans whining about dems coming to save them though, its not their responsibility to find a speaker, you have the majority, GOP.

Find a better option than McCarthy, and maybe there is a chance democrats play ball, in the meantime, they will continue to do what they are doing, 212 votes for Jeffries.

I don't think anyone believes it. The best the Dems can do is to strike a deal with McCarthy to get some concessions in exchange for committee/rules changes that favor the Dems. Short of that, I think they will keep at it for McCarthy into next week. If he continues to fail, they will eventually move to Scalise.

I disagree, McCarthy isn't worth supporting anyway, nor can you trust him, he has been pandering to the extremists, so let him keep at it.

Dems could support a better, more trustworthy republican for speaker, however.

No need for Dems to support any Republican, it is GOP’s responsibility to find a way here. The only way Dems should support McCarthy is if they get written guarantees to co-lead committees and that he won’t ever use majority of majority rule.

Looks like McCarthy will get enough votes sometime today. Make no doubt though, he will be the most weakest and ineffective speaker in our lifetimes.

They don't have any leverage at the moment since McCarthy is gaining momentum in this vote. He has peeled off a handful of no votes and is getting close his magic number.

So? The goal was never to support McCarthy regardless.

He is living on borrowed time anyway, next debt ceiling will be the end for him as speaker, if not earlier, he has given a lot of promises and will be removed if he acts outside of that.

There's no doubt about that. He has made concessions to peel off more votes and will have to live with that if and when he becomes speaker.

McCarthy must've made insane concessions to get the likes of Scott Perry and Paul Gosar to flip.

Gonna be fun seeing how he maneuvers next debt ceiling, safe to say.

Its not going to end well, for him.

From what I see, he could now vote to have majority decide, because he has - for the first time - more votes than Jeffries

How does that work though? Would he need a majority of the House to vote to approve the change from majority to plurality? Would the Dems do that if it came down to a vote?

Boebert and Gaetz must be bricking it right about now. Hopefully they are not included in any committee assignments.

Of the seven crazies who would even vote present to make thus go through... I'm sure he needs to flip about 3 or 4 of them

Gaetz was talking with Gosar who completely blanked him when his name was called to vote & walked down the aisle a bit to yell out ‘McCarthy.’

Gaetz’s face as he walked back by was quite fun to watch.

McCarthy on to Yrump to put pressure on remaining nutters. That way Y’rump comes up smelling of… you know what I mean
