US Politics

Can elected lawmakers really be bound by any such written agreement?

Technically it could be broken, but given that all members of Congress need to be reelected and more importantly, the fact that there's a Presidential election around the corner, neither political party would want to go into 2024 on the wrong side of voters.

Genuine question: what's the incentive for Dems to support any Republican speaker? The longer this goes on the worse it looks for Republicans. If Republicans can't sort it out, maybe a handful of them would be willing to support a Democrat.

I can't imagine that has any chance of happening. It would have to be someone that already decided they are absolutely not running in 2024 and even then they would be so brutally savaged by conservative media and influencers, they'd probably have to move their home.

I can't even see Republicans agreeing to a more moderate compromise to obtain Democrat votes at this point.

The only way to neuter the dissident members is to steamroll over them. This might be the only way.

It will be interesting to see what Trump says next, he's told them at least twice publicly to vote for McCarthy and they haven't paid any attention, in Republican circles that usually provkes something
There's more bi-partisan stuff done than most realize, low-level stuff that may be important to them, funding for local projects and stuff, break an agreement and they'd kiss that sort of stuff goodbye + I suspect that they'd be offered some plum assignments in committees and such like that would get pulled

It's a hollow threat. The concessions that McCarthy would give up to get the Dems on board would cost him his own party.

I'd say so many of them are in their element on the house floor right now. Gossiping, plotting backstabbing and conniving in between votes. Some of them probably feel high on the buzz of it all, governing the last thing on their minds.

This cringeworthy stuff from the latest speaker. Bringing up Fredrick Douglass to justify a Byron Donald vote.

What did you expect, elect idiots you get morons, they're doing exactly what they said they were going to do
Oh, I am enjoying the feck out of this because it was always preordained. I just wasn’t expecting to be as gleeful as I am now. McCarthy is claiming he isn’t going anywhere. The buffoonery is breathtaking.

I agree but at some point it becomes a serious problem, if McCarthy steps aside who would get the job, Scalise is McCarthy Mk2 and presumably wouldn't pass muster with the likes of Gaetz

I think Gaetz would have Scalise as Speaker in a heartbeat, it’s the moderates that would need winning over.

There’s a reason why someone glosses themselves ‘David Duke without the baggage.’ They ain’t moderate.

If so why hasn't he proposed him - Gaetz is known to dislike McCarthy on a personal level so is never going to vote for him, Gaetz is just a shit stirrer IMO - not he only on either

I too think that Gaetz et al enjoys being in the middle of the chaos & is a shit stirrer. They want the debacle to continue.

Well they'll change their tune by Jan 13, as I understand it, their staff won't get paid after then and none of them can function without flunkies!

Can someone not just give John Bercow the US citizenship already? I would honestly pay a lot of money just to see this from a speaker in the House of Representatives.

If he doesn't do then Betty will sort them out
