US Politics

It seems there are people around who prefer to ‘show sympathy’ for everything and pretend the world is a great, caring place. It’s no different from ‘thoughts and prayers’.

The fact is, as a Brit I don’t think any of us deserve any sympathy for Brexit, likewise the red states deserve no sympathy for Trump policies. You reap what you (as a state/country) sow.

Nobody is pretending the world is a great caring place at all, but that doesn't mean we can't be caring. Everything is so black and white with your posts. And are you really saying that those who didnt vote for Trump and Brexit deserve what happens?

There is just so much wrong with your posts. The last few have definitely been some of the worst I have ever read on this site, and believe me, the bar for that is low! Congrats for going lower.

Feck me, do you want a new shovel? You're doubling down on your own ignorant statements. You are talking about real people's lives being destroyed. People losing their livelihoods, their homes, not affording to eat and you're dismissing it all in such a disgusting yet exceptionally ignorant, childish and naive manner.

Your posts sound like they are being written by a very flippant and not very bright teenager. The disdain you are showing is almost bordering on sociopathic.
I’m not dismissing any of those issues, but I just don’t see how ‘showing sympathy’ helps at all.

I’m going to ignore your last paragraph before this descends into petty playground insults.

"'They poked here,' explained the beautiful German girl, lifting up her skirt, 'all night. They were old, some were covered in pimples and they all climbed on me and poked - no less than 20 men,' she burst into tears.

"'They raped my daughter in front of me,' her poor mother added, 'and they can still come back and rape her again.' This thought horrified everyone.

"'Stay here,' the girl suddenly threw herself at me, 'sleep with me! You can do whatever you want with me, but only you!'"

Cal: You reap what you (as a state/country) sow

It shows you are human. You saying everyone deserves what they get just sounds ignorant and bordering on sociopathic. And you clearly are dismissing those issues if you say they all deserve what they get.

 indeed.

How exactly is showing sympathy on an online forum going to help anyone or anything?

It’s all very well trying to be Mr Nice Guy and cry over everything and anything, but the fact is the matter remains that the US/UK messed up badly in 2016 and can’t really blame anything that’s happened since on anyone but themselves.

Seriously? Showing no sympathy is worse than advocating genocide?

Great, you’re really learning from Trump and his cronies regarding false equivalence.

The rest of the world suffering from the Trump presidency deserve a lot more sympathy than the red states who put him in the White House, particularly those geniuses who voted 3rd party.

The dust bowl was always going to end a lot of careers. Instead of hoping for sympathy, one should be trying to position oneself for transition out of subsistence farming and into saving for retirement. After all, Oklahoma voted for Hoover so those people deserve what they get.

The alternative is just to blame everyone but oneself and hope (pray) the government provides for them.

They deserve what they get. Always voting against their own interests to a party that holds them in contempt.

Why would people blame themselves for something that's got something to do with them? In a lot of states certain industries were essentially the lifeblood of small towns. As soon as they leave there's not much left. Only someone living in some fantastical libertarian utopia would expect people with families and other commitments to be able to just move somewhere else and find work, with the added caveat that many of said people were basically trained for one profession their whole lives.

I do think the eulogising of small-town America often becomes extreme, and many of the genuinely racist attitudes you'll find in such areas are often dismissed as key reasons as to why many of them voted for Trump in favour of economics, but there are many fairly decent, hard-working people who've been fecked over by unemployment and the tide of automation. Such people need government help; it's not somehow absurd that they want it when they have nothing else.

The way that the merest hint of dissent against Israel has been attacked like a drone swarm, repeatedly twisting fairly benevolent comments into accusations of anti-semitism, in both the UK and US recently has been remarkable. Say what you like about the Israel lobby, they're nothing if not well-organised.

In my opinion, it's like this. If there was to be even a small shift of opinion in the US towards the Palestinian view, and a president in office like a Sanders willing to pressure Israel, then it may have no choice but to agree to peace along the lines of the long-standing international consensus. For the Israelis, this cannot happen. So they are merciless about stamping it out.

Indeed and the pro-Israel lobbists are immorally ruthless as well

Those are two atrociously phrased polling questions. Completely meaningless loaded phrasing.

Why do you always make such ignorant and disgusting statements? Do you honestly not think before you post? Or are you just on the wum all the time? Your post above and the Brexit post are truly despicable posts tbh and I would be banned if I responded how I would if you said those in person.

Well said.

I’ve tried to give you a wide berth and not waste each other’s time for a while. The fact you felt the need to do a deep dive into my posts seem to indicate some kind of unhealthy obsession.

Your posts reflect an extremely unhealthy world view.

Just one of the underlying conditions there were greedy banks not willing to re-write tons of loans for new farm equipment that they were shoving down farmers throats. So the farmers defaulted instead.

Oh yeah and that libertarian troll didn't think business greed had anything to do with the Depression.

Ultimately whilst the government should try to help those people, there really isn’t that much that can be done in the face of automation.

Well, yes, hence why governments will need to increasingly move towards things like UBI and the like.

That’s one thing we can agree on.

But your initial posts suggested we shouldn't even feel sympathy for Dem voters in Red states. Surely if you agree the problem is so dramatic they need government assistance to be able to live comfortably, you're sympathising with their flight and understanding it's not down to them?

I think we need to find solutions, offering sympathy is no different to ‘thoughts and prayers’ and serves no purpose than to feel good about oneself.

Maybe I’m just too blunt with the way I phrased things.

That’s true, I personally expect the world to end within my lifetime one way or another.

Awfully convenient. "The world is ending in my life so there is no reason to be anything but selfish and greedy and don't care about any long term damage. Everyone will die in 50 years anyway."

How exactly have I been selfish and greedy? Just because I don’t subscribe to the further left the better thinking that some people on this forum do?

There are real problems in this world and there are so many people who think abortion is the top priority. Clueless fecks the lot of them.

I'd at least have a modicum of respect for them if they actually gave a feck about what happens to the fetus once it's born. As it stands they're only really interested in the life of the child up until it's born. Then it's not the state's problem anymore.

Ocasio-Cortez outdraws presidential candidates, decries moderates as 'meh'
"At South by Southwest, the 29-year-old freshman congresswoman drew bigger crowds than any of the half-dozen presidential candidates who came to Austin, too."

I bet Useless Joe Biden will never draw a crowd as big as AOC
