Someone knows you've got a job with top security, uses a secret (e.g. you've had an affair) to bribe you to do something (e.g. give them classified information). Its not a trial - its a job interview. Therefore there is no burden of proving things beyond a reasonable doubt. Her testimony is evidence and since it is highly unusual for job applicants to be accused of rape, its more than enough to disqualify someone - especially when there are plenty of non-rapist job candidates waiting in the wings.
Look at Gorsuch last year for instance - he went to the same school that Kavanaugh went to but never had to deal with this sort of shitstorm because no one claimed he raped them.

I don't know if you've watched the Hunt, but it is a pretty good depiction about what happens to these men who are falsely accused of raping someone without any single shred of evidence, besides the word of the woman. It just ruins the whole thing. If a woman is raped, she should come out. Not 36 years later, not as a political tool and she better have some evidence for it beside her word.
If I remember correctly, Anthony Rapp has been speaking about it for years and only recently it caught up. Furthermore, Spacey himself shot himself in the foot when he semi-admitted it.
