US Politics

Seriously, flipping out over tweet comparing one user pestering another to catcalling? Did I miss the part where she directly called someone sexist or accused them of sexism?
I'm just confused at the forced outrage on this one. With some of them I can at least see why...

So he's well known even among Liberals, always on CNN and goes on left leaning shows but he wants to only boost his profile. But you know his intentions weren't pure for a fact. Interesting

Doesn't have his own show, not even Fox would give him that and it's fairly obvious. Like I said he's the right wing equivalent of the guys at The Young Turks.

Is there a name for this phenomenon where someone pretends to be outraged or disgusted by something hardly disgusting or offensive whilst also supporting people that say stuff like Palestinians live in open sewers or black people suffer no institutional racism in modern society?

It's like concern trolling, but not quite.

Also Ben Shapiro is not a respected conservative, he's a loudmouth cnut who made a career from preaching to the choir and riling up morons. You say you abhor the fact that the left shies away from bipartisan dialogue. You must be a huge fan of Trump and his 12341241 rally circle jerk MAGA fests? Nothing screams bipartisan dialogue like 50.000 rednecks screaming LOCK HER UP and CNN SUCKS.
I believe the word is snowflake. They're little snowflakes who can't handle criticism.

Did you read the tweet? Crying sexism because she doesn't want to debate a man she'd probably lose against. Doesn't get much lower. And how exactly is a serious discussion about issues that raises money for charity "bad intentions"? These people on the left drive me nuts.

Hard to argue with this response as well:

This culture of 'Debating' is ridiculous.

I've met so many people in my life that can be wholly wrong headed on a topic but still tie someone in knots through facts, logic and obtuseness and 'win' an argument.

Really thick people have began to herald the likes of Shapiro as messiahs.

Her tweet was spot on. Life is not a series of call and response, transactional encounters. She did well to respond so succinctly and still tell Shapiro to get back in his box.

Jesus Christ this is detiorating fast. Who is a respected conservative in media then? Just because you don't like them doesn't mean he isn't a relevant figure now. I don't follow the second part of your post of all. It screams of the old "I don't agree with you -> You are a fascist (or in this case Trump supporter)" shtick. How boring.

Then just say no? Why bring it to sexism. Its completely unwarranted. But she's your second coming so I guess it's cool

Another one who paid sod all attention to this bloke's challenge to her - asserting himself that the only reason she's hot property is because she's a latina and so gets asked kid glove questions about lipstick. Feck off with this disingenuous bullshit man, it's tiresome hypocritical nonsense.

Like I said he's the right wing equivalent of the guys at The Young Turks.

That's fair. And what is wrong with that? Conservatives should debate The Young Turks likewise. I watch them both occasionally and I like that they both defend free speech and healthy debate which is more important to me than which side they are on.

Oh thought he did. My bad. What was he medium was he using when he videoed the request to debate?

I did watch his challenge.

I did watch his challenge.

And you completely ignored or failed to notice the fact it was laced with references to gender did you? You instead reckon that a long winded version of "check out this dumb fecker who only gets a pass because she's a Latin woman, I'd pay to show her up for the fraud she is" was a genuine challenge that should be met with politeness? Yeah right.

Nothing wrong with it, don't really consider either to be politically household names.

Probably a town or an university hall like a lot of his debates, shown on youtube.

Relevant and respected or completely different things.

You complain about the progressive left dodging non partisan dialogue. Whether you are a Trump supporter or not, Trump is clearly not on the left. Trump never debates anyone, ever. Trump does campaign style rallies for his supporters. Do you think, that maybe, just maybe, it's not just the left that's dodging non partisan dialogue. It's nearly fecking everyone. America is polarized beyond belief. The problem is people on both sides on the isle are too busy pointing at each other screaming, WAAAAAAAAAHHHH you are dodging non partisan debate.

Yes, there's moron on the left, and yes there's equally many morons on the right. Saying things like "people on the left drive me crazy" like the problem is completely concentrated on that part is just so fecking thick my skull nearly explodes when I try to imagine what it would feel like to actually think this way.

What this has to do with facism, I have no idea. I was calling you a hypocrite.

Oh and here, you find some respected conservatives: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_American_conservatives

I genuinely didn't see it as a gender challenge . If you all who know him better than me genuinely think it was then I apologise for my comments and would say she had all right to respond like that. I honestly didn't see it that way but I don't know him half has as well as most of you do.

He could call her up at anytime and ask to sit and talk to her. She'd probably say yes.

The grandstanding nature of the whole thing playin out online for an audience of sycophants is the issue.

He behaved like an ass. He got called out for it in reply. The man is a top-tier gonad.

And said sycophants commenced spreading a narrative about sexism off the back of this guy they look up to getting shown up by a woman I'm guessing? Colour me surprised...

This is another thing that annoys me. We are discussing Ocasia-Cortez and the left at the moment so this is what I commented on. I should be free to do that without pointing out in every other sentence that Trump is indeed an autrocrat with fascist tendencies. That's some form of inverted whataboutism if you like.

I'm sure Shapiro is an excellent debater. Doesn't make him any more or less right or a good politician though. Being eloquent means feck all in the grand scheme of things.

A question to Americans in here....Why do Governor polls get so much visibility? I would have through Senate and Congress get the priority.
Partly because of Federalism... Governors are the chief executive of their state, some as large or as populous as European countries.

Also, partly because it serves as a bell-wether for the state in who they like as a chief executive figure.

Finally, and most importantly, partly because of the connection between the governor and Congress. Governors have veto power over congressional redistricting and have the power to appoint people to vacant legislative seats.

Noone expects you to do that tho. I think it's more to do with you doing the exact things you criticise others for doing, which is your right but don't get upset when someone calls you a hypocrite.

I'll try it with less words.

You: Progressive left dodges non partisan debate.
Me: So does the conservative right.
You: Stop calling Trump fascist.
Me:

Nobody has said anything to the contrary. In fact he is terribly wrong about a huge number of things.

What? Trump is a fascist. I just don't see how it is relevant when we are discussing the problems on the progressive left. It's like pointing out United haven't signed a full-back and responding with that Hull haven't either.

For what it's worth @Pagh Wraith it would be great if Trump went on the Young Turks as well. Heck if someone like Paul Ryan went on would be brilliant.

Because dodging non partisan debates is a characteristic of people in general not of the progressive left. When discussing problems with the progressive left don't you think it's more efficient to discuss problems that are specific to them?

Hull and United have different means and different needs, so that analogy doesn't make sense. All politicians would benefit equally from non partisan debate.

Neither Trump nor facism nor any form of policy in general are relevant to my point.

Yeah, and they won't do that. Which is a shame. I mean I can't even imagine Trump in a real interview outside of his Fox comfort zone anymore but mainstream politicians shouldn't really be afraid to go on these shows. I think there were a number of Ted Cruz vs Bernie Sanders debates on CNN recently. This can't be a bad thing for political culture.

I fully agree with the last bit. Maybe we were just talking past each other. I don't even have a problem with someone refusing to debate Shapiro. But it's the way she did it.

Yeah it was a good thing but they both have skin in the game so it was also an equal perspective. As opposed to a media personality at best with a politician.

Which was relatively benign imo...

Shapiro: Cortez only gets treated seriously because she's a woman and a Latina. I'd pay money to show her up on here as the dumb ass she is. She's only gets asked questions about lipstick and hairdo's.

Cortez: Just like cat calling I don’t owe a response to unsolicited requests from men with bad intentions.

Pagh Wraith: I don't have a problem with someone refusing to debate Shapiro. But it's the way she did it.

Any notes on how Shapiro chose to call Cortez out Pagh? Listen to yourself man.

I even would have been fine with something along the lines of "The fact he has a show on YouTube and a few followers doesn't mean every politician has to debate him now" if she wanted to get a little dig in. A reasonable point actually. It's the bringing sexism into it which cheapens it and really weakens her position in my opinion. That and giving unnecessary ammunition to the right.

Where are these quotes from? Some quick googling got me this:

“Miss Ocasio-Cortez, I’m really excited that you’ve been elevated to that position and I would love to have a real conversation with you about the issues,” Shapiro said.

“You’ve noted that you think Republicans are afraid to debate you or talk to you or discuss the issues with you. Not only am I eager to discuss the issues with you, I’m willing to offer $10,000 to your campaign today for you to come on our Sunday special".

“I would love to debate her because I have one question for her," Shapiro continued later. "Name an industry you would not nationalize; which ones should the government not run and why? Alright, can she name any of them?”

Shapiro also offered to donate the money to charity instead of the campaign.

"So let’s make this happen! Let’s make America a more civil and interesting place. Let’s do this thing," he concluded.

It's provocative but I think he's hitting on the truth there to be honest. Having a candidate that represents intersectionality and inclusion is certainly very valueable to the Democratic Party at the moment.
