US Open 2009 Flushing Meadows

I have work to do and stuff to write so have only dropped in to have a look now and then but from this thread I realise I've been missing out. Feck.

Murray had a poor match. He didn't blame his wrist, he blamed his sh1t tennis. Plenty of work to do before January and the Australian Open. His own analysis of his failure was once again very insightful. He is yong enough and wants to be lernin and still number two in the world.

Is it right that he loses his No. 2 spot if Nadal wins today?

Nadal was just too good, there was a point early in the second where it was in the balance and it seemed that Monfils had a good chance on the night. From that point on Nadal just was of another class. That's the difference between a good player like Murray and a great player like Nadal, mental strength.

What a cracker of a match. The rallies were incredible. Monfils can serve like nobodies business and rafa is finding his form. great great tennis.

was out during the day and saw murray lose to cilic when I got home. was it bad? I was at the open in 2008 and saw cilic give novak a 5 set run for your money match. hes got a great serve but looked a tad slow on the move.

Murray had a set point in the first set at 5-4, lost it, and was in shambles after that, pretty poor performance.

I want Nadal and Oudin to win it all, but my head tells me its going to be Federer and Serena.

Yeah I think your head is spot on, although I have a weird inkling about Clijsters, that said Serena looks like she is on form. I still think Nadal isn't in his top form although he does have Rog's number recently so you never know.

Can`t imagine Nadal beating Federer in a tournament that basically belongs to Federer and where Nadal has never won.

I couldn't tell if you were being sarcastic or not.

First set he should have won, he needs to sort out his aggression. Every break point he messed up. One in particular where he really had Cilic on the ropes and if he had followed in one of the shots that had Cilic on the stretch he would have had an easy volley to put away.

Worst i've seen Murray play in ages, a totally inept performance. Fair play to Cilic, i always thought he was to be feared but still thought Murray would come through in 4 or 5 at most but he was awful.

Performances like these in majors keep on nagging me that he'll never do it. I think only if everyone thinks he has no chance will he ever really have a chance...

Feckin' hell, you've changed your tune.

I wasn't his biggest fan for a long time, but the lad will win a couple of majors, no doubt in my mind. He's improving so quickly, and it's a mark of how good he's become that folks like myself assume he'll be in the semis or thereabouts every big tournament.

Once he gets over the hump once and wins one it will all become a bit easier for him. He really isn't helped by the mongy British media though.

I think i'm talking through bitter dissapointment brophs.

Hopefully my Murray optimism will return in time.

Chin up, Frankly.

He's the third best player in the world, and he looks far more capable of beating the big two than the chasing pack. Add in his age and the fact that he doesn't seem to be plateau-ing like a lot of the other players around his age, and he has every chance of getting a few majors.

This is weird, eh? Me talking up Andy Murray and you being indifferent.:)

hah it is indeed a little strange!

I've just seen him throw away another opportunity against a guy who has massive potential but a guy who if Murray took a lead over would crumble. Murray had his chances and failed to take them then lacked the character to battle back. I think his wrist really could have been an issue because his touch and backhand were rather poor.

Against A-Rod at wimbledon i was dissapointed too, he should be beating these guys and needs to start doing it.

Nadal doesn't look the same. His serve seems to have been much weaker, he should still beat Gonzalez though.

I don't think Nadal is in top form physically and that is affecting his power. He is a warrior who never quits so you can never count him out.

Funny that paul talks about Murray being ranked higher than Nadal if Murray has a good next tournament, when it in all honesty is like having Safina ranked higher than Serena.

Djokovic - Verdasco

7:6
1:6

third set just started now 0:1

Djokovic looks damn tired. Verdasco on fire.

Murray sometimes reverts to his old, inferior passive game, and he's got to get over that if he wants to compete with Federer in the grand slams. Murray also needs to look over his shoulder at the younger guys coming up, like Del Potro. He's going to have his work cut out even to stay at #3.

I have a hunch his abdominal injury has affected his serve. Though by the end of the Monfils match he was hitting 110 maxing at 122, which is as fast as I can remember him hitting it (ie. not his fastest but thats up there for him)

agreed. Murray has come in leaps and bounds but Nadal is approaching Federer level. Murray is ahead of Djokovic in my books.

Anyone see the end of Novaks last night match, where he did a John McEnroe impersonation and called Johnny Mac down for a rally? funny stuff.
