US Open 2009 Flushing Meadows

To be fair Murray is a bit shit. Massively overrated because he's British.

He's 3rd in the world. If United had a player who was the 3rd best in the world you'd get quite rightly crucified for coming out with such crap. It's no different from saying "Torres is a bit shit because he's not on the same level as Messi and Ronaldo."

No you are, and not just a bit.

First you say now he's struggling to keep up with younger tougher players in which you include Murray and Djokovic, and then you claim the former is a bit shit. So who in tennis is actually not shit, considering Federer is a bottler? It's just Nadal is it? Or is it now Del Potro now that he's won a slam, something Roddick whose part of that shit brigade has done before at the same event. You really do live in a parallel spastic version of our universe.

Now to post in general and not in response to the strange duckman.

I think now we're going to see Federer's dominance slip. He's absolutely dominated the tennis scene like never before with one blip of a year in the middle where Nadal beat him at Wimbledon and he began losing a lot. But i think this year is probably going to be the last we see of him right at the top and dominating the majors. He's 28 now and players peak earlier these days. I don't think he has the legs to dominate the field anymore and despite the fact that he's still the best right now, his game isn't the same as it was 4 years back.

I'm just hoping in the next two years he can get at least two maybe three grandslams to get closer to 20 before he runs out of steam. But this is Roger and the legend that he is you never know, he may just dominate next year as well.

Also i like Del Potro's game a lot. As well as Cilic although the latter needs more consistency.

I prefer them to Nadal and Murray who are retrievers as much as anything else. Their game is based around a lot of speed and running. Federer although his game kind of took a leave in the last two sets yesterday, can match any power player when his groundstrokes are on fire.

So right now, after Federer's time is up, i wouldn't mind seeing Del Potro getting the better of the other top players.

Dont you think Murray's and DelPotros game is more similiar than Murray's and Nadal's?

Dont you think Murray's and DelPotros game is more similiar than Murray's and Nadal's?

Not really. Murray has very little power in his game whereas Del Potro hits forehand winners people think they can reach but go past them before they get done with their swing.

I'm no expert at all but the way i see it all three are obviously predominantly base liners with different strengths. Nadal's is his top spin hitting, stamina, speed, athleticism and consistency. Murray for me is similar, he doesn't huff and puff as much and has a little less venom in his game but his basic game is similar in the sense that he too IMO relies on staying in the point, making angles, and out enduring the opponent. Del Potro seems to be all about dominating from the back of the court. Huge serve, ripping the forehand and back hand and dictating play.

That's why i've been such a big fan of Federer. He doesn't fall into any of those categories. He can match the power players when he's hitting the ball well and he can play great defensive tennis when needed.

I'm not sure why you are even bothering in the first place, Amol.

You're right. But it is strange how people can still doubt someone whose won 15 grandslams on all four surfaces, and returned to the number one spot at 28. I find it bizzare. Even the greatest players in the game have acknowledge him to be better than them. That's the biggest compliment he can receive.

I don't know if any of you watch cricket but this reminds me of that. A couple of years back people were actually doubting Sachin Tendulkar and i found that funny considering all he had achieved. He came back, with the swagger of old,
scored two hundreds in two finals against Australia to beat them in Australia, was excellent in tests, another century yesterday in a final and generally proving his critics wrong once again.

I just don't see the point in criticizing these guys when they've broken every record and really don't need to be lifting a racquet or bat again to be spoken of as the greatest.

Requiring an injured opponent to do it. If Nadal didn't feck his body up this French Federer would have retired with no French Open and no number one spot.

Mark my words, Federer will not win another grand slam. He's done, over, burned out, kaput.

What injured opponent? Nadal lost to Soderling. Would never have beaten Federer playing like that. He played someone fit in the final and won and over the course of the tournament was the best player like he usually is. Federer has gotten close to winning the French too many times. He's only worse than the possibly the best clay courter ever. It was only a matter of time he won the French. I'm surprised he didn't win it sooner.

I love the over exaggeration of the Nadal injury. He was injured only during Wimbledon. Besides, Federer had lots of injury issues the previous year when Nadal when won both titles. No one took any credit away from Nadal and rightfully so.

Right. Getting to a grandslam and coming within inches of winning it, winning two in the year and making every final is a sign of burning out. You've out done yourself again.

Also i'd just like to add that it really doesn't matter what he does now on. I think he might nick a few more, maybe two, maybe none. But now he is truly entering into the twighlight of his career. You fail to grasp the concept of players aging. He's now 28 and that's really the reasons he's going to struggle a bit more now. Like all great sportsman do. Like anyone great at anything does. No one can stay at the top forever unless they quit early. Federer loves the game a lot so he's going to continue. Was Sampras rubbish before he beat Agassi in THAT final? Before that he was struggling like anything. Everyone was beating him. Agassi became a fringe player in the tennis scene for ages. I think you need to get things in perspective.

What a match last night. Del Potro thoroughly deserved it. He was superb. I haven't enjoyed a tennis match that much in a very long time.

i went to bed last nite after del porto double double faulted to give federer a 2-1 lead

wish i'd staying up now.....great match - the US open is much better than wimbledon - much faster with a better atmosphere

I think that proves once and for all that Federer lacks bottle.

When an opponent really takes it to him and doesn't just give up he can't deal with it. Mr. Federer, I think you've met Mr. Nadal, well here's Señor Del Potro.

:lol::wenger:

You don't know what you're talking about.

the count in with a good shout for most retarded tennis-related post ever.

Remarkable

You're showing with each and every post just how little you know about sport

Tennis or otherwise

Why not say 'I love Nadal and hate Federer' at the start of the thread and then you could be happy with that alone

Del Potro is the real deal and will begin to challenge for all the majors from now on. Once Nadal gets fully fit and regains his form, Fed is going to have to deal with him as well as the new talent.

Funny thing is that the Count usually says that he likes Federer.
Maybe to appear slightly unbiased. His statements sound very childish. Like in football you can deny Robbie Savage having a lot of ability and no one would contest that. You could deny Lampard having a lot of ability and many would contest it. You deny Maradona having a lot of ability and you're just a clown who doesn't know what he's talking about.

I don`t think it`s reasonable to expect that Federer will be winning everything from now on. Many on here seem to think that winning absolutely everything is what Federer has to do to be regarded as the best ever though. I think that`s asking too much.

To be fair, it’s obvious Count is a bit of a WUM, as evidenced by the “Is Federer out yet?” tradition. Not sure why he does it though, when it seems mildly irritating to people and there is never anything amusing created in the threads as a result of people biting. The key to a good Redcafe Federer WUM is timing; take the amusing Kevin for example. He waits in the e-shadows, hardly posting anywhere else, until Federer gets ‘humiliated’ again in yet another gland slam final. He then emerges victorious like a fat kid who just robbed a Chocolate Cake from his local Gregg’s. Kevin attended the ‘Vijay school of CAF Wummery’ as a wee e-youngster; there can be no doubt about that.

CD's a terrible WUM, don't know why he does it. He seems to spend quite a lot of time at it but still doesn't get any decent reactions. I don't think Kevin was a WUM, he genuinely underrates Federer. Vijay lost all credibility as a good WUM when he claimed thomas muster was better than Nadal, a step too far.

I'll give you that most reactions aren't that good, but it only needs one person to be sucked in and actually argue with me to make it all worthwhile. Amolbhatia100, step forward please.

I think his place is already cemented as the best ever. He'll never win a slam as Laver did, but then again, doing so is vastly overrated. His record in slams speak for themselves and will likely stand for generations. The only players that I rate in the same league as Fed are Borg and Sampras. Borg could've had far more slams had he not retired half way through his career.

Umm i prefer to call it a discussion. An argument involves anger or some sort of emotion. So you enjoy wasting time discussing on a topic you don't care about stating an opinion you don't believe in. Sounds er, fun.

I agree. The unbelievable part is how consistent he is. We all know how brilliant he can be and turn it on when required, at least when he's on form. But even through the ups and downs the run of semi finals and finals of grandslams he's gotten to is stunning. I don't think he's playing nearly as well as he was a few years back last year he was average. Average for him is reaching almost every final and winning one. Crazy world Roger lives in.

Absolutely.

And even now, in what can probably be considered as the autumn of Federers career he has reached all the GS finals and won two of them, twice and many victories than anyone else.

Regarding Count Duckula and the tennis threads, I think it has reached a point where it`s just pathetic and irritating.

The tennis threads, I tend to think, are one of the few places on the caf where we can get a nice decent discussion where most posters know their stuff and the discussions are kept orderly. It`s a nice break from the usual caf threads IMO. Having to read and disclaim CDs posts is just a bit annoying IMO.

Think of what his parents are like I bet they are borderline suicidal at this point, just counting down the days till he is out of the house.

Agree with Ruben. The tennis threads are usually a nice pleasant break away from the footie stuff where every opinion is so charged and there are so many utterly biased viewpoints looking to drive their point home. And ducks don't help.
