US Men's National Team Discussion

most pitches get watered prior to a match to help with the speed of ball movement unless of course you are playing for Burnley

tbf...it's going to be hot really just about anywhere in the US right now bar the northwest so it's more about the time of the kickoff than anything else

as for the team and match...i think they are starting to look better and more of a unit as this tournament moves forward simply b/c they are spending more time together

need to get more out of the wingers though as they aren't really as involved as we typically see when we have Weah and Pulisic out wide

Okay, I’m gonna tune in tonight to see us play Canada.

Who should stand out to me / should I be watching?

e - just realized this is the 1/4 final. Cool.

Well there is something you don't see everyday. 30 seconds in the linesman gets KO'd.

Completely unrelated but... In like 2015, WakeMed Soccer Park hosted the Olympic qualifying tournament for Rugby 7s for Rio. The Canadian team was beating a Caribbean team pretty badly and one of their players started a shoving match with an opponent. Some dude in the stands behind us screams, "Leave him alone ya hoser!"

feck. Heard the announcer say Liam Millar (Canadian player) and it brought up the memories of Liam Miller. So sad.

That is a red card
Yep. Managing to stay up to watch it so far (almost 2am here). How the hell the ref or VAR didn't deem that worthy of a red card I've no idea.

Poor game so far. Not much creativity or attacking quality on show.

Agreed, and kudos to you for staying up! The lack of depth in the MF for domestic players is really apparent. Also, whatever the hell this formation/strategy is....it's shit.

CONCACAF sets the standard for great officiating in world football. Couldn't imagine ever criticizing them. :nervous:

I actually thought the non penalty decision was right.

It was a handball, but I think it would be poor from VAR to ignore the foul that came first and just award the later handball.

It might not have been a big enough foul in and of itself to, say, award against a defender as a penalty. But when already using VAR to assess the handball, I think they did right to take that earlier foul into account and show the ref both incidents for full context.

I know a lot of the best attacking players aren't in the squad, but of those selected I thought Vazquez would get more playing time.

He and Ferreira pretty much look the only real goal threats - can't Ferreira also play deeper / wide as well as leading the line? I'd have thought Vazquez starting as #9 and Ferreira one of the ones behind was getting more threat on the pitch than some of the wide players / AM's they've tried?

ugh.... so boring.

On a side note, this Caada team reminds me of US teams in the early 00's when we played Mexico; lots of graft, cohesion, and fouls but little actual threat, counting on one counterattack-based moment of magic to get a goal.

Vazquez is suffering from Fereira having two hat tricks against countries with populations smaller than most US cities. As a result Fereira keeps getting the start at the #9. Also, this team does not have the MF talent to start an actual #10, so the option of starting Fereira there is not not....well....an option.

Yeah, good points.

Against those two weaker sides there was enough 'quality' to dominate and score goals. But against the two stronger nations - Jamaica and Canada - the US have had more of the ball and created plenty of half chances, but haven't really looked great in terms of either creating good chances or in their finishing.

I'm sure it would have helped having more of a presence like Vazquez starting but, as you say, that would take a midfielder out and it's probably having an extra midfielder in there - albeit quantity over quality - that's helped them have more of the ball, even if they've not done enough with it.

Bloody hell, that feels like watching United for the last ten years - struggle to convert possession dominance into chances / goals, then finally take the lead and, immediately, the opposition score a soft equaliser with pretty much their first attempts at attacking.

I really wish they gave more youth a chance in this tournament and fewer mid-30 year olds who will be retired by 2026.
Yeah, at least we did that. The problem is our A and most of the "B" team are Euro base dnow, so his team, mostly MLS is just...bad. Young...but bad. Mexico brought their A- team, so they better win this.

Maybe that's it - our MLS/domestic team would be hot garbage

Was that a choice of US and Canada not to have strong squads for both, or the European clubs only willing to release for one of the tournaments?

If the latter, how come Mexico have similar squad for both? Are most of their current main players still based in Mexico, rather than spread amongst European clubs as the last generation were?
