US Men's National Team Discussion

The chant Mexico fans regularly do for goal kicks is "puto," which literally means "gay prostitute/man whore", but it's roughly the equivalent of "f*ggot."

It can mean a myriad of things, I'd say it's more similar to the word "pussy" than the F word, it can be used as a friendly term as well when taking the piss with your mates, it's definitely being used in a derogatory term but the way some want to categorize it alongside the N word or the F word is laughable, might as well ban every swear word in football stadiums. I have hardly ever heard it used as a term to describe a promiscous man, but the female equivalent is strictly used to describe a promiscuous woman.

Not surprised by yesterdays result, this is by far the worst Mexican national team I have seen in my 25 years watching football. Maybe changes will finally be made now that both the US and Canada have overtaken Mexico but I highly doubt it, I love mostly everything about Mexico, but in the words of Logan Roy, we are not serious people.

It's official: he's back.

There weren't too many options left after Patrick Vieira, I guess.

Or is it that US Soccer are skint nowadays? Some countries pay a lot of money to lure high-profile candidates as their national managers.

I knew that the federation has stupid people, but this takes the cake in terms of idiocy. Definitely Grampa Simpson walking in and out stuff.

And that fecking photo montage they used for the announcement. The only thing worse than Berhalter is 3 Berhalters.

Absolutely insane. I know they are cheap fecks, but damn. He's got 2.5 years to get it right and the expectations are very, very clear.

It's a total joke this is how it netted out and some players really wanted him back?

No reason to take the Nations League or whatever B or C rated tournament very seriously. It's going to be the same ups and downs, highly questionable moves, and outcoaching when it comes to better teams. The goal must be to get out of the group at first position, then win at least 1 knockout round match. If U.S. doesn't reach the quarterfinals of the next Men's World Cup, it'll have been a total failure for everybody associated with US Soccer Federation and heads must roll.

Seriously though what’s the thinking behind the decision? Have there been any interviews with the federation?

Scores one goal all season then belittles opponents in his Concacaf competition.
Yeah, Pulisic often comes across as a bit of an asshole. Poor form to do that when you win so comfortably

I hate this re-appointment with a vengeance but imagining the look on Claudio and Danielle Reyna's faces today is putting a little smile on my face.

Nah. This was not the end of the game, Mexico had just wrecked Balogun a minute earlier and then surrounded Weston.

Interesting lineup changes, not sure I like two of them.

- Scally for Dest is a no brainer.
- Zimmerman for M. Robinson makes not sense if Miles is healthy. Zimmerman's lack of footspeed is going the be a problem. The only reason I could see this making some sort of sense is if they are trying to make up for the loss of McKennie's aerial ability on set pieces. Still don't think it is a good call.
- Aaronsson insteadt of LDT in for McKennie is a head scratcher. This means Reyna has to drop deep unless they are counting on Mussah to fill the Adams role as a super duper American Kante clone. Gio needs to be as close to goal as possible, and while his defensive cover was great against Mexico it is still a massive flaw in his game.

edit...apparently Miles is hurt.

Scally has done an exceptional job on Davies. How exceptional? Canada just shifted Davies to the other side of the field.

I don’t think any of the other American psuedo 9’s make that kind of run. Probably back off to the corner of the box and wait for the pass to feet.

Pepi makes that run, but he doesn't have the pace to make that half yard of space.

Canada are executing Mexico_Meltdown.exe. Dirty feckers are hacking Reyna and Balogun all over the place.

US looks as good tonight as I can remember. Canada is supposed to be the upstarts in CONCACAF and they've been dominated.

The whole US back line has been fantastic tonight and Mussah has been everywhere. Great team performance.

Really professional game by the US. Reyna ran the show in the first half and you could see the drop off when he had to come off at halftime. The back line was phenomenal and Mussah apparently is as good a 6 as he is an 8.

Balogun is just different gravy.
he makes the front line so much better b/c of his ability to get in behind with his pace and he can finish.....it opens up a lot of things for weah and pulisic as now you have to worry about Balo creating issues

Would you celebrate scoring one goal against Liverpool? I think this is a bizarre stick to try and beat him with. We fecking hate that Mexico team.

Bizarre to mention this considering the MEX fans were chanting homophobic slurs at him the entire time.

Na after the shambolic capitulation Canada produced at the WC, I think it's pretty clear what their level is. Once you figure out how to keep Davies quiet, the rest is straightforward. You had the 2 CAN fans on the Caf getting all giddy in this thread after they topped WC qualifying, they've disappeared since then.

One more thought....Mussah was so damn good the last 2 games playing in a new role. The talent that guy has is immense! He would be great at Utd (counts as homegrown too I think???), but I doubt there is any interest.

a really solid performance considering you were without dest and mckennie then you lose Reyna at HT....Thought they looked a little leg heavy the second half which is understandable given the intensity of the match against mexico

just keep building the depth of the squad and push for more tournaments where you get into those win or go home scenarios

only disappointing thing is i would have liked to see zendejas get into the match to see what he could do

You could see Callaghan talking with Zendejas after the game and the boys over at Total Soccer show said he was apologizing for not getting him in. He is on the Gold Cup roster, so I bet that this was a consideration. He should be the focus point of that squad.

He should have gotten him into the match for sure but clearly he should be a main figure head for the gold cup roster....yes, we have a set pair of wingers in pulisic and weah but we still need quality depth and i liked the look of him back in january.

Callaghan showing US Soccer yet again that going back to GGG is a huge mistake. Instead of playing a system and expecting everyone to fit it regardless of the Xl available, Callaghan was flexible, playing a different system for both games and dominating both. Let's not forget the US lost to Canada (who were without Davies) 2-0 last year.

Takeaways:
  • Let the boys play free-flowing football. They have the talent if you give them freedom. GGG just overthinks everything, trying to show he's some mastermind and failing big time.
  • A question for years is who replaces Adams when he can't play. Callaghan finally answered it: you don't, you can't. You instead shift tactics and innovate, putting in Musah who came out a star. You still need more defensive strength against tougher teams, but for 90% of the US' games, Musah is your man moving forward when Adams can't play. Hopefully, GGG didn't see these last two games and think Musah can play the Adams role; he can't and that's the wrong takeaway.
  • Callaghan got the best out of each player, some playing the best games of their US career or matching their heights (Pulisic vs. Mexico was tied for best we've seen from him, Weah was at his best, Musah was at his best, Gio was nearly flawless, even Dest was showing off against Mexico). That's what you need from an international manager: not a hardass System-Above-Everything-Else, but a guy who recognizes his goal is to get the most from his players at a man-to-man personality level and at a tactics level, bending the tactics to the players.
I find it extra funny that they don't trust GGG with the Gold Cup. My assumption is they don't want him to bomb and everyone jump down US Soccer's throats for what's an awful hire. Now he can lose to Germany and say, "He needs time with the team again. Give him a year!"

Also, US Soccer should stop claiming GGG is their most winning manager when the two years leading up to his firing the team played counties like El Salvidor and Jamaica three times, padding results. He only won 5 of 12 against none CONCACAF teams, and mostly against traditionally poorer teams.

Throw all your pennies at Callaghan to hire him full-time and let him be the puppetmaster behind the scenes. Then hire him when GGG bombs in Copa next year.

Awesome, can't wait. What a fecking coward. No way does this relationship get fixed to where it needs to be any time soon when the adult in the room can't be bothered to even try on his own.
