US Men's National Team Discussion

The Federation can't even provide the proper welfare for the more successful and better Women's National Team. What makes you think they are actually logical and competent when arranging these fixtures? Can understand if there might be a NFL conflict to use the stadium, but the home field advantage really only comes into play versus Mexico.

Absolutely agree regarding WNT.

Just to point out that the US Soccer Federations own guidelines recommend that this game needs to be canceled.

Sadly this is true. I focused on baseball as a kid after little league/AYSO years because the cost of baseball camps/travel teams etc. was affordable but travel soccer was not. It's not helped by the way MLS is structured. The draft/salary cap/single entity format kills off the need for most clubs to give 2 shits about youth development. Could you imagine how amazing it would be if we had 30 FC Dallas's?

I think the boldened bit is the biggest detrimental effect to MLS as a league. Perhaps it was smart in the beginning and perhaps through say the first ten years to maintain sanity and whatnot, control costs to an extent, and so forth. But it needs to be eliminated and full control given to the individual teams, perhaps with a cap/luxury tax system remaining (I'm fully against hard caps but no problem with soft caps and luxury tax systems).

The National Weather Service (NWS) forecast a low of minus-13 for the qualifying game between the USMNT and Honduras at St. Paul, with a northwest wind up to 10 mph. The game is expected to be played in extreme weather conditions because FIFA doesn’t have any rules about playing in extreme cold.

If the NWS is correct about the freezing temperatures, the game on Wednesday between the United States and Honduras will beat the coldest Major League Soccer game in history. The record was set on 20 February of 2018 between the Colorado Rapids and Toronto FC and it was three degrees with a wind chill of -16 degrees.

Any club whose player gets injured tonight should sue the ever loving shit out of US Soccer. This is insanity.

jesus christ what a dumbass decision to hold this game here. Against freaking honduras. You want to try and psyche out mexico or something whatever. Allow your talent to shine against crap teams and maybe we could actually score a goal in the first half.

The entire leadership of US Soccer should be fired for what is going to happen tomorrow night. The game is set to become the lowest temperature game in international/1st division history. Kickoff temp is set to be 4 degrees and around 0 by the end of the game. This negligence shows the federation has zero concern for player safety. If I was Honduras I would refuse to show up and force CONCACAF to make a call on this. Disgraceful.
I was close to replying with some snarky comment how you shouldn't be such wussies until I realized it's 4 and 0 degrees in your kind of measurement. Minus 15 degrees Celcius, what on earth are they thinking.
Florida, California, Arizona. Lots of cozy places there. Instead they hold the game in the city that's known in film history for even Steve Buscemi's handkerchief getting frozen stuck to the gunshot wound in his face.

What they are thinking is:

1. Where are there lots of white people and little chance of Hondurans to show up
2. If we get cold weather it will benefit our team.

This is how small time our federation is. They have so little faith in the players they think we need to play in a hostile environment that is "slightly less hostile" to our players. It is pathetic. Out team is way more technical than physical at the moment. The game against Canada showed that. A team like this needs decent field conditions to thrive, not conditions where the ball freezes and is slightly deflated simply due to temperature. We don't need our players having to worry about fast twitch movements injuring their frozen muscles. Small time idiots.

This is so Greg it is not funny. He had planned to have the temperature lower in the dressing room at halftime during the game against Canada so the players would feel it was warmer outside when they returned to the pitch. The worst thing is nobody in our federation can look at these gimmicks and say GTFO! It is sad that we have such inept people in control at all levels.

i can understand using the cold to your advantage when a teams coming from a location where they are training in 75degree weather but this is a bit beyond stupid. It takes away the advantage as no one will be able to deal with the cold comfortably enough to want to play football.

Bit of a worry to read about the issues with the weather. I hadn't realised that.

Looking at the table, the US really can't afford to drop points here - given how tight it is between 2nd-4th, and the remaining 3 games being harder.

I see Mexico play Panama. With 1 point between them both and the US, what result are people here hoping for in that game? A draw, so they both 'drop' points (although, really, a great point for Panama); a Mexico win to help with the US battle for top 3 by pulling away from Panama? Or gamble on a Panama win to help the unlikely scenario of Mexico missing out?

Rivalry aside, I'm assuming the first two options are the best in terms of helping USA to get through in the top 3.

So basically, the US is in if the win their remaining 2 home games (Honduras and Panama) and Panama loses tonight against Mexico. A Panama win tonight and the next window is chaos and the US is in trouble as next window is both Mexico and Canada away and Panama at home.

You mean Costa Rica away, yeah?

Yeah, a USA win tonight, and a Panama defeat, certainly takes a lot of the pressure off needing anything away to Mexico. And then, as you say, you'd just need to beat Panama at home to avoid needing to go away to Costa Rica and get a result.

yep, CR you ae correct. Canada is in my head! :wenger:

An awful lot of changes in that line up.

I don't know much at all about Luca de la Torre, other than the basics. What kind of midfielder is he? And is he highly rated at all (in terms of this latest US group of youngsters)?

From the few clips I have seen of him from Holland he looks really tidy on the ball and does a good job of receiving and then turning to push it forward. He's not the dribbler that Mussah is but he should deputize just fine.

Thanks. :)

He sounds a decent player and a solid enough understudy at this stage.

Do Honduras really have nobody better available than Maynor Figueroa? He must be turning 40.

United should sign Acosta to take free kicks. That’s 3 more assists in one game than all year for Utd.
