I think if we get a Rojo type player for the right side of the defense we should be all set. By Rojo type player I mean someone who can play both as a CB and RB without a drop in quality (I think Jones and Smalling have a big drop in quality when they play as RB).

I think Valencia will be used as the cover RB for now.

No it's just City and Kompany. But Chelsea's defence is better than ours because it's more well rounded. Liverpool and Arsenal's are probably no better than ours now but their not going to be competing at the top of England and Europe this year. I'm talking about what we need to win the big trophies. I agree they are few and far between. And I want Jones and Smalling to be given opportunities (I like Snalling more), but not both of them together. One and a world class partner is what we need for the next year or two until Jones or Smalling have either proven themselves, or not.

Then they'll continue be used in fits and starts like they were when Rio and Vidic were here, and we'll have people moaning in the next couple of years saying they're not good enough.

In my opinion, we should at least give them a full season to see if they can step up, otherwise, we'll never know.

Would be ideal but it'll be hard for us to when they pick up injuries every few weeks.

Same, I dont think he adds much apart from goals, in build up play I'd rather have Reus, he is like 5 years younger, costs less and I think our team is more balanced then in attack. Reus, di Maria, Falcao, Reus are complement to eachother.
Ronaldo is one of my all time favourites but I have to agree, I do not want him to come back now. He will upset the balance of the attack. Everything has to go through him or he gets upset.

No, they don't have to be. Buy a world class CB then give Smalling and Jones 10-15 games straight each with him to see how they do. And I don't think we can afford to do what you said. Jones and Smalling lining up to face City, Liverpool, or Chelsea scares the hell out of me.

Having said that not everything is going through him at the moment at Real. And he's become even less selfish recently too.

If Ronnie returns he might want his #7 shirt back and the club might think it's a good idea, personally I think if he does return then Di Maria should keep the #7 and be the main man at UTD!

Why? These two, on their best form, have shown they have the talent to mark some of the best strikers/wingers out the game, especially Smalling. I'd be very confident with a Smalling/Jones partnership, especially if they were given time.

Well. I wouldn't be. Whenever I think of Smalling and Jones, like quite a few players we still haven't god rid of, I think; good, but not good enough. Now, in their cases, they may well get better. But I don't want them in the lineup together, at least not in the big games. And I'm pretty sure they won't be anyway as long as Rafael, Shaw, and Rojo are fit.

Im with Walters on this one but I see the other side of this as most non-United fans I speak to would identify them as our weakest link, and some did even last season when I argued the midfield was in far worse shape. The bottom line for me is not a question about ability but availability. If the two of them could stay fit and put a run of games next to each other I think they could form a very good partnership. Evans as well. Id like Van Gaal to make a decision about who his main CBs are and then give them a run and for fate to smile on that partnership and not kill it with injuries.

Wayne Rooney is an integral player for Manchester United, and anyone who can't see this is deluded.
Surely that's not an unpopular opinion, is it? I think most that don't like him, myself included, can still admit he's one of our best and most important players. Only the really bitter ones would say otherwise.

I don't want Jose Mourinho or Pep Guardiola to manage Utd as I find both of their styles of football boring.

Welbeck would have been ridiculed on here had he been at another team and not us. I honestly believe if he came through the Liverool academy, no one on here would have ever rated or defended him. I also believe that some of the comments about his supposed ability on here are extremely Rawkish.

well. dunno if thats unpopular or controversal at all? Like almost all other fans, people tend to overrate their own player. Its not only Danny. There are a couple of other examples where the caf has fairly exclusive views, that nobody outside Manchester would ever share.

Well I'm talking about his staunch defenders on here. The ones that swear he is brilliant and will find any defence for him. Those same people simply would not rate Welbeck had he played for a rival.

Funny thing is, in these 'big games' you're talking about, Jones and Smalling have always performed well, so I'm not sure why you wouldn't be confident with them at the back.

I've not seen anything from Luke Shaw in his time at Southampton to convince me he'll be a good signing, and don't understand how it's even possible to value a left back at £30m when they're not even 20 years old.

I've also not been impressed by the lack of fitness reports, stupid posey photos, and being mouthy on twitter.

Only Van Gaal's recent positive comments on him are keeping me from being seriously sceptical.

Also, I don't think Falcao will be the revelation everyone seems to have presumed he will be. I think he'll score some goals and work hard and be decent enough, and I'll like him, but in a year's time whether we keep him or not we'll be looking for another striker again.

Its unfortunate there arent lots of compilation of defenders but I hope you can remember Southampton vs United, he was arguably their best player, and he is the only LB who doesnt play at a topteam who had Januzaj in his pocket :p. He was 18, in the team of the year, earned his international debut and even went to the WC, bet you would be shitting your pants if he went to Chelsea.

Name names. Surely no-one's that deluded?

I can't evisage a situation where I shit my pants because another team signed a left back. Sorry.

I've watched him a number of times and he's been decent, but most young fullbacks look decent and he wouldn't be the first young English fullback to be engulfed by his own hype.

He was good against United, but in a meaningless game, and England's world cup campaign is something no player should be proud to have been a part of...especially if they somehow manage to be deemed unfit to play only a couple of weeks later.

We needed a left back, so I don't necessarily disagree with signing him. I just think he has it all to prove and there's a few concerning indications that he thinks he's already made it.

Hmmm best not to name names: I think his staunch defenders know who they are. Some of the defences of Welbeck on here are not just bordering on ridiculous, they are bat-shit crazy.

Its fairly extreme with Danny, but there are several other examples where exactly the same happens.

Oh there are for sure. I have had debates with defenders of Nani (to a lesser extent), Cleverley and Ando, in the past. Those particular three, along with Welbeck, always cause extremes with posters. I guess Berbatov did too, but I steered well clear of that.

I guess the Welbeck departure has caused such massive hysteria in the media, amongst posters on here, coupled with the "lost identity" crap, that it is bringing out the worst in both the pro / anti Welbeck camps.

After the last few days, I'm decided that the line in Fergie's book where he refers to Rio Ferdinand as "an intelligent man" is even more concerning than the one where he claims Ashley Young was "signed to replace Ryan Giggs"

Decent? Hope you're saying that because he isnt really spectacular, but defensively he is always excellent, one of the most solid LB's defensively and attackingly he picks out the good pass and has good link up play, he is extremely rapid, and very strong, dont know what a LB should have that he doesnt.

Ryan Giggs legendary goal against Arsenal in the FA Cup was mainly as a result of sheer incompetence from Arsenal, and would have been saved if Seaman had stood up rather than falling backwards on his arse.

Basic levels of match fitness?

This is afterward talk, Ashley Young was pure pure class when at Aston Villa, shame it didnt work out.

That's as unpopular opinion as you'll find in here I suspect.

Ashley Young turned out to be exactly as useful for United as I thought he would, and if you look at the comments on here when we signed him a large number of people felt the same.

There was very definitely no point in time when he looked remotely capable of reaching the level of someone like Ryan Giggs.

Shaw is an outstanding defender given his age. Like, insanely good at defending. That's what counts most.
