Unpopular Opinions Thread

Anyone who uses the term "fanboy" to refer to others is a cretin.

I dont think its about the people actually. I think its about the appeal of London versus Manchester, of Spain versus England, and particularly more recently of richer clubs distorting the market, being willing to fork out whatever it takes to bring in the player they are after, while we worry about value in the market.

That has also led to a strategic shift. I think we decided we were, generally, going to stay out of these bidding wars and look to recruit younger players. We have all seen the evidence of that: Smalling, Jones, Chicharito, Powell and Zaha.

Im not criticising the value in the market thing per se either. I just found it strange that people expected value to return to the market. These things tend to be quite skewed, like the price of oil. Prices go up much more quickly than they come back down. If there is no value in the market one window, with billionaires throwing money around for all and sundry, its quite optimistic, you might even say dellusional, to expect the next window or the one after that to be offering bargains.

Of course you can always find the hidden gems, the less glamorous signings that are nonetheless exceptional, like Vidic and Evra, and we have had a few of those too. But for the players everyone wants, I think soft factors make other destinations more appealing, and our competitors often having deeper pockets, or more willingness to put their hands into them, is often decisive.

That is all the long term explanation. This summer we have the added challenge of not being in the CL which makes things harder still.

1 Even without any additions in this transfer window and the departure of Giggs, Vidic, Rio - our squad is still Top 3 quality.

2 We should limit signing Premier League proven players. They are overpriced and generally don't perform in Europe.

Same goes for 'hater'.

Edit: Actually I don't find 'fanboy' that bad. I've never used it, probably never will. But some people are blinded by their love of individual players.
Whereas 'Hater' is usually just thrown at anyone who doesn't believe Danny Welbeck is the next Thierry Henry, for example.

To be labelled a 'fanboy', you've probably gone way over the top in praising a player and making excuses for them.
To be labelled a 'hater' you simply have to think a player (who isn't Young or Valencia) isn't good enough.

I don't find 'fanboy' as annoying as 'hater'.

i've only ever heard a particular set of people so expressly and fluently use that term. always makes me question whether we're talking of footballers or boy bands.

Yeah. Though you can sometimes understand what's meant by it, there are certainly better ways to put the point across.

DDG's size is perfect IMO combined with his agility. He doesn't have any trouble commanding his area anymore and is athletic enough to reach either top corner while still being able to get down to the low shots which people forget make up a large percentage of shots taken. It's why his shot stopping ability is up there with the best in the world.

You don't have to convince me. He is the best GK in the world for me currently. I rate him higher than Neuer and Courtois.

Or, it is completely false and all you have is an unpopular opinion. What has actually Courtois achieved which DDG has not? Yes he won the league but that's not DDG's fault that he was not a part of a strong Atletico team. DDG won the U21 WC with Spain and the EL with Atletico.

What exactly has Courtois over DDG except for size?
Get where you are coming from, hence the probably true.

I wouldn't swap DDG for anyone, but I wouldn't say he is best in the world, yet. I certainly expect him to get there eventually. Courtis, has improved every year, as has DDG. Courtis was very good last year and shone. DDG's performances went largely unnoticed last year largely because of United's poor performance.

Courtois being part of successful team does not make him better than DDG. That's a really flawed logic right there.

Probably the 2 stupidest things I've read this year.
Right. You've come into the unpopular opinions thread to express your disagreement at said opinions. Have fun.
The Moyes quip was in half jest, tbh. Half serious only because we offered him 6 years and were waffling on long term planning or some shit like that.
GTA online though....me and my group of friends were stoked about pulling off heists together. We kind of got bored waiting.

I'm expressing my opinion. Apparently it's unpopular with you, so it looks like I'm in the right place ;)

The online is awesome. Missions, Deathmatches, races, survivals, capture.. The heists aren't that missed for me anyway.

United's international players are getting a disproportionate level of abuse because opposition fans finally have had a valid reason to criticise their ability after our first poor season in 20 years.

We won't get back to the top of the league just by signing a bunch of big names.

The pieces we need are already in the reserves and academy. All they need is a chance.

Chelsea will walk the league next year.

That's probably the most popular opinion here..

That certainly has been the view expressed by a few, particularly since the Fabregas signing, but I still think it's a bit early to predict when Mansour hasn't yet properly opened his wallet. I'm not expecting anyone outside of those two to properly challenge anyway.

LvG is overrated.

There's no question that we are all getting right behind him because he's ours, and we did the same with Moyes. You look for all the most positive aspects of your manager, it turns out (never really had to for the last 25 years!).

But at the same time, he simply must be better than Moyes, and even if he somehow emulates our 7th place finish he is guaranteed to do it in a more entertaining way. The one thing he isn't is a dour and grey, and that in itself is something to get excited about.

And, of course, when he's got it right in the past, he's got it very right.

The thing is, as good as he's done at times, he's been equally as bad at others. He's an unknown quantity in a way coming into his time here. It could go either way. There's certainly the potential for it to go very wrong.

thats exactly my opinion and I am a bit scared. If he fecks up, United might be in trouble. I hope, that he gets it very right, but I am not entirely convinced yet. Pessimism sucks.
