United set for 'busy' summer of transfers

Fergie Targets Three New Players

From SSN:

Sir Alex Ferguson is aiming to make three signings during the summer to ensure Manchester United will have a strong squad for years to come.

United wrapped up a record-breaking 19th title last weekend, but Ferguson is plotting the next stage of his team's development and has identified his transfer targets.

A new goalkeeper is expected to be the priority due to Edwin van der Sar's impending retirement, while there are doubts as to whether Paul Scholes will carry on next season.

Gary Neville retired earlier in the campaign and there are also question marks regarding the United futures of Michael Owen, Wes Brown and Owen Hargreaves.
Ferguson's squad should be boosted by the return of Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley from loan spells at rival Premier League clubs, but the United boss will not rest on his laurels.

"We have some ideas in mind," the United boss told MUTV. "Hopefully we can get them put in place.

"We have Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes coming towards the end of their careers, Gary Neville has already retired and Edwin van der Sar is retiring, so there are holes we want to plug up in terms of the safety and security of the team for the next few years.

"Of course, we have some excellent young players and a lot of them have progressed, which gives us a great, powerful squad.

"I am looking at maybe three signings which would boost our overall quality in our team."

Meanwhile, Ferguson has joked about the United fans who took a banner into Anfield proclaiming 'MUFC 19 times' for Liverpool's game against Tottenham, just 24 hours after the Red Devils had sealed the title at Blackburn Rovers.
"I wish I had taken that banner to Liverpool on Sunday," said Ferguson when he went up to present the players' player of the year award to Nani.

"I bet there were 76,000 fans wishing they had thought of that."

So... Who will they be?

one GK
two Outfield players

My money is on: De Gea, Rodwell and Modric.

I would be very happy with that :D

(though A. Young would be good too! :P)

I'll do it for you:

Sounds like Rodwell is not happening now.

More and more people saying Young will be first through the door.

I think our best hope of a 'muppet' signing is in midfield.

Fixed.

And, no!!! Conveniently, this MIGHT have something to do with the ST renewal date drawing ever closer.

But Sir Alex pretty much said the same thing

We are obviously going to buy, as long as we buy the right players, not much else matters. It's going to be 'fun' over the summer :)

Sniejder, Young, Sketelenburg and hopefully a few cheap young promising surprises!! I am sure Fergie will surprise us all again though this summer like he has been doing the last few years!

He said he was looking at three players, not that we will sign three players. Some of them might not be available, some might be wanted by more than one side, only a goalkeeper is a certainty because we will not be able to cope without a new player there, other than that there will be no rush at all because we are well equipped.

I'm starting to think that signing Young is looking more and more likely, especially considering the fact he can play on the left, right or behind the front man.

I get the feeling that Young would also be the ideal player to play off Berbatov should SAF feel the need to rest the Rooney and Hernandez partnership.

We haven't really got a regular back up parnership at present, and although i don't feel that Young will be signed specifically for this purpose, he does appear to be just the right type of player who will get beyond Berba when he drops deep.

Additionally Berba up front, flanked by Young on the left and Nani on the right, would also give us a pretty balanced and potent 4-3-3 option that we do not really have at the moment.

He said he was looking at three players, not that we will sign three players.

I think in Fergie's language, 'looking at three players' means he's looking to bring in three players. Not that he's only got three options.

Ah, perhaps, especially as we have to have back up plans for our goalkeeper target.

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed he intends to make three new signings this summer.

It was always likely to be a time of change at Manchester United given Edwin van der Sar is due to follow Gary Neville into retirement and Paul Scholes has yet to confirm whether he will extend his career by a further season.

In addition, there are major doubts hanging over senior figures such as Michael Owen, Wes Brown and Owen Hargreaves.

And whilst youngsters Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley will be given their chance after impressing during loan spells with Sunderland and Wigan respectively, Ferguson realises he must bring in new blood.

"We have some ideas in mind," the United boss told MUTV at the annual United's awards ceremony at Old Trafford. "Hopefully we can get them put in place.

United have been heavily linked with Atletico Madrid's 20-year-old keeper David De Gea, although it would go against Ferguson's preference for a goalkeeper with great experience.

Aston Villa's Ashley Young has long been viewed as a potential United target, although more latterly Inter Milan playmaker Wesley Sneijder has come into the reckoning.

The Dutch World Cup finalist would be an obvious replacement for Scholes, whom chief executive David Gill admitted last weekend might opt to call time on his stellar career after the Champions League final with Barcelona at Wembley on May 28.

What makes you say that re: Rodwell?

I think (hope) its likely.

A. Young would be a very good addition too.

We need to blow some big mula on a world class CM, also.

All the info coming out (if it's believable) is that the Rodwell interest has cooled significantly.

I'm well aware how many fullbacks we have, which is why I said it may not be like for like.

We have plenty of defenders anyway, four proper center halves even without Brown who may leave in the Summer and four full backs. With 25-men squad we need to be careful with how many senior players we keep at the club, although one additional defender could be useful indeed.

Sneijder
Stekelenburg
Sanchez

Cleverly and Welbeck to add some yoof to the ranks too.

Keep Hargreaves and Owen on pay as you play deals.

VdS, PiG, Brown, Scholes all out.

With Rafael, Fabio, JOS, Evra, Vidic, Rio, Evans, Smalling, I think we have enough defensive cover.

thats all folks

I dont get the hype about Ashley Young. Admittedly, I don't know much about him but surely with Valencia, Nani, Park, Giggs and Cleverly we have more then enough strength in depth on our wings?

We've got Cleverley, Diouf and Welbeck coming back from loan... they'll be like new signings.

Welbeck>Owen
Cleverley>Obertan

I'm not sure Diouf, Obertan will be around next season.
Hargreaves has never been replaced
Scholes will need replacing. (Anderson has not developed as hoped)
VDS obviously
I fear Brown has lost favour with SAF

Rodwell is an interesting acquisition due to his versatility. He's perfectly suited to deputise for Carrick/Hargreaves, and be an able deputy at centre back. If he progresses as expected he could be around for a decade.

Valencia's injury left a massive void. No coincidence we started to play our best football on his return. A young deputy or someone like Ashley Young can provide cover or competition for wing places. A player like Sanchez can even play Rooney's role, play as an attacking Midfielder or cover both wings.

My preferred choice would be Modric coming in for Scholes. However, I can't see Spurs releasing their best player. I'm also not sure United would pay anywhere near the salary Sneijder would demand. Our renowned RedCafe scouting team of Ekeke and Chief will have to come up with some names.

Possibilities

Rodwell
Young
Sanchez
De Gea

I'm really skeptical on the Young link. We've Cleverley and Welbeck coming back.. and both can play on the wings.. why would we splash out on young, who would probably not be below 10 mil ?

GK - Buffon? ('cause it's not like Fergie to splash out on a 20 year old for first choice GK - and Stekelenburg is all over the news, so I'm thinking it's media bollox)
CM - Sneijder? Charlie Adam? Henderson? Modric? (Really really doubt if Spurs will let him go for anything less than a hopeless fee) .. Pirlo, even?
Def - Varane?
Surprise package: Gareth Bale ???

So you want Young, Rodwell, a keeper and a world class CM?

Yes please :D

Guesstimates of this would be:

De Dea 17m
Young 12m
Rodwell 18m
Modric 40m

77m

I would expect us to recoup 5-10m from player sales, possibly more.

A net of 60-65m shouldn't be out of the question if we are to believe that the remaining Ronaldo money is there to be invested and that Fergie has 25m a year to spend.

Not sure we should believe that though!

Step 1: Announce possible signings.
Step 2: Say you have your eye on someone.
Step 3: No value in the market.

;)

This, the Sneijder and Modric rumors are madness

We will never spend more than 25 million for a single player

Welbeck>Owen

I agree with all of this.

As you say, Rodwell is an attractive option for many reasons:

- Versatility (covers two key positions)
- Age and nationality (suggest long term commitment based on past experiences)
- Talent - he does have a lot of good qualities

Anyone doubting discount Young clearly has not watched him play enough. He is a very good, proven PL footballer. He has only one year left on his contract and would make addition to the squad. A very low risk option, both in terms of transfer fee and likelihood to succeed.

Sanchez would be superb but I'm going to remain sceptical that we are in for him.

Modric is a must imo. There are not many top class CMs who are remotely available and we have been desperate for one for years.

Varane, GK, midfielder.

Agree.

Varane - we know close to a deal
De Gea - fee agreed, just need his final decision
midfielder - I'd imagine it will be someone early 20s, not that expensive

What about Berbatov?

Or Rooney. Or Ferdinand. Or Veron.

If Fergie has identifed a target and wants him badly enough then he'll usually pay what is needed.

No point signing a player for £25 million you're not sure about when the player you want might only cost another £5 or £10 million.

Besides they CL run will hav generated a few quid.

do lads think our performance against barca will dictate some of the moves we make?

i.e. if we win, it'll be modest moves....but if we lose, that'll be 2 losses in 3 years, and some big moves would be done to change the team?

A Proven PL player, England International and can play all over the attacking midfield you don't get that. I agree though we don't a winger or a striker for that matter yet most people want us to blow 30mil on Sanchez.

We on;y missed Valencia so much because 3 lungs was also unavailable ... ie very unlucky. Do we really need Young when we have Giggs and Cleverly as cover?

Just how good is Ashley Young? What is is talent development curve? Do you see him becoming as good as say nani has become?

Our targets are probably players who we are not even considering, it usually is.

I think we should expect a few surprise buy's...ala York, Hernandez, etc.

Fergie thinks long term, that would be too knee jerk for him, I imagine the deals for the players he wants are well advanced.

Personally I don't.

I think what governs the buys is, what is going to continue to make Utd successful

I'd say he's very good, and works very hard for the team. Has been Villas stand out players for the last 2 seasons. He provides plenty of pace, and is versatile enough to play on both wings. Perfect for the counter attacking football United have played under SAF. In a long season 3 quality wingers are a must - Obertan or Bebe look nowhere near good enough at present to provide that cover. Park is not a winger, and if anything Cleverley covers the same position as Park. We're not even sure if Cleverley can cut it at United.

In fairness Sultan, we're not entirely sure Young could cut it either. If he steps up like Valencia did however in coming to United, he'd be a good addition undoubtedly.

I think we'll get Modric, Young and a goalkeeper (most likely De Gea).

Modric is a hunch and might depend on what other clubs do.
