United or England ?

England for me. I'd take a Euros victory this summer over us winning the PL next season, with no hesitation.

I think Ireland were in a situation where losing a game would have been a better result in terms of getting a play off spot than winning at one point. It really doesn't make any sense. Not that it would have made any difference anyway, we have no hope of qualifying for anything anytime sòon.

A shame. I have a soft spot for the Irish. When was this, 2020 qualifiers or 2024?

I get into the tournaments with England, but then Utd aren't playing. During the season, I never bother with the internationals anymore really, just annoying and in the way.

Internationals are just opportunities for United players to be injured. United!

All of you guys choose United over England because you don’t actually know what’s happening if England win something. If England won the WC or Euro, believe me, you guy would change your mind.

Probably an element of truth in this. England winning a World Cup would be unbelievable (really fecking unbelievable) but the parties across the nation would be great fun.

As others have said it’s Utd for me every day really, but I do agree that it’s nice to be able to watch football with mates and actually all support the same team rather than be the one getting hated on for being a Utd fan.

I'm not English but international football is a fun distraction when there's no real football on

My attitude to England varies on a scale between couldn't give a feck and actively funny how shit they are, depending largely on who is in the squad/team.

The worst thing is that there's nothing at stake anymore. You have to really try your hardest to suck at football to not make it into the Euro's from now. Even this tournament the #3 teams go through. It shouldn't be like that.
Yes, I felt 16 teams was the ideal size for the Euros. With 24 teams, it means well over half of the non-awful teams in Europe (ie not pointless teams like Andorra and Gibraltar) have qualified, with only 10 or so missing out, which makes the qualification process mostly a waste of time. If they’re going to have a 24-team tournament, the qualification process could have been dramatically streamlined, which could have meant fewer mid-season international breaks. But they won’t do that because €€€

I like to think I'm this, but then I must give a bit of a feck because I still put myself through enduring most England games, even though it's like watching paint dry.

Definitely helped at the Euros and World Cup having a Utd player in the team and actually playing well (Shaw, then Rashford), so my apathy towards the bunch of (mostly) dislikeable players in the team at the moment is probably at an all time high.

Lot of people vying to be top reds at the moment remember uniteds greatest ever player was also Englands greatest ever I support united but I also passionately support England for all its faults England is a bloody great country to live in with a lot to be proud of

For me it's United, there is nothing quite like supporting your club team, but it would be crazy to see England actually win something or play with some passion in my lifetime. It's funny seeing the entire country experiencing what we go through every week. No tactics, and all of a sudden every player is bad and needs to be dropped, weird excuses from the manager, and players basically admitting they're confused by their instructions.

For Euro 2024, to be in a position where losing is a better result just shows how stupid they've made tge qualifiers.

  that is wild. I had never seen this, what a joke. Thanks for taking the effort to pull this up.

Funny thing is I would bet that if any player was asked if they would rather win the World Cup for their country or win the highest honour for their club then they would choose their country.

Feck off! You are no United fan.
United first country a distant second.
I'm Irish by the way.
That explains it :D

Partly my view is because I've never seen England win anything and I've seen United win plenty including the PL multiple times (even if it was ages ago). If England win the Euros and the next WC and United continue to be shite, maybe my stance will change.

They probably would, yeah. But I don't think that's too 'funny'. Most players play for plenty of different clubs in their careers, often (apart from most British players) in many different countries, etc. And aren't 'fans' of any of them. No matter how much they kiss the badge and praise the fans of whichever club they're currently at. So it's quite likely they'll have more genuine emotional investment when representing their nation than the various club sides.

I'd say it's different for a lot of fans who live and breathe that emotional investment into the club team they support every day of their lives. As evidenced on here, there's obviously some fans who support their national team just as much as their club - but I think the percentage of fans who'd choose a world cup would be smaller than the number of players (though with recency bias, I guess the figures might change if asked during an international tournament or club season?)

Had this discussion in my shop with a lot of customers this week so I’m genuinely interested to know on here who people care more about between United and England ?

For me it’s always United over England and outside of Italia 90 and Euro 96 it’s not even been anywhere near questioning, I’ve had people in this week that support all kinds of teams and it’s probably been around 50/50 so far.
Euros and World Cup bring certain level of unique patriotic passion in many countries that can be entertaining in and of itself, but national teams-level football is not anywhere close to what Premiership level is. Not to mention that you watch your beloved club multiple times a week for almost entire year, for many years. Compared to once-in-four-years competitions.

It is not even close. United above anything else in football. 100%.

In my observation, only people who are not that interested in football, care for national teams more than their club :)

I do get frustrated when work colleagues / friends / neighbours, who when it comes to club football scoff at the idea of silly men being so into it and passionate about it, suddenly became 'yeah, come on Engerland!' and throwing parties / BBQ's for the matches, etc, whenever there's an international tournament.

Often similar with things like Women's football international tournaments, Wimbledon, Olympics ('Team GB!'), etc. They don't talk about them at all in the long gaps between those events (year, two years, four years) then are so into it / 'I could've cried with pride' etc for the few weeks that they last.

It's that kind of thing that means I often even prefer 'neutral' (not England / Team GB) performers or teams to win to quieten down the whole pantomime.

I think there are a lot of United fans who remember the fact that the Football Association have screwed United time and time again over the years that there is still plenty of animosity towards the FA specifically and the England National Team by default.

When you then add in how the southern press and southern-based football supporters treat United players turning out for England (Mainoo the most recent example), then no wonder so many United fans don't really care too much how well England perform.

I’d take an England World Cup win over United winning the league cup and that’s it. Any other United trophy I’d rather over any England trophy.

Certainly I’d rather United win just 1 CL or PL than England win every World Cup over the next 50 years.

I think it depends on whether you think your team deserves to win the Euros. They don‘t.

United. (I‘m not English).

Funny aul question to ask in an Irish forum!

England, of course. Everyone get their hopes up really high. England are favourites for a reason. Southgate is at the wheel, Bellingham is definitely better than Zidane, Declan Rice is Gattuso mixed with Pirlo. Everything is coming together. There's no way England can feck up this year. Everyone should have their hopes so sky high. It's coming home!

I used to care about England, but having been to a number of games to watch them I got sick of hearing the anti Manchester United fans around me just hurling abuse at United players, for no other reason than because they played for United - especially during the early 2000's following the fall out of Euro 98. I wish England well and keep an eye on the games, but for me it will always be United above England.

United without a doubt. Plus, I expect I'm in the minority when I say British over English.
English nationalism is the worst kind of nationalism. Not that British nationalism is particularly righteous in the context it's most often declared in.

United over Norway for me. But not sure what I’d pick between United winning CL or Norway winning a major tournament. Might only go for the latter as it’d be a once in a lifetime event, but considering I’ve never even seen Norway in a major tournament it obviously won’t happen.

Believe me, you know fecking nothing.

United and its not even close. England losing a world cup final would bother me far less than United losing an FA cup final.
