United or England ?

International tournaments are the rare occassion where you can really feel a sense of unity everywhere you go. I love it. And I also prefer Holland over Feyenoord! :smirk:

Feyenoord maybe, maar er gaat niets boven Groningen surely?

I struggle to care about most international football tbh. I think there’s far, far too much of it played, and much of it could be scrapped ie pointless mid-season friendlies, qualifiers against teams like San Marino, and the entire Nations League

The worst thing is that there's nothing at stake anymore. You have to really try your hardest to suck at football to not make it into the Euro's from now. Even this tournament the #3 teams go through. It shouldn't be like that.

It's like the difference between United and my home town club. I want my home town team to do well, but United are my only love. United without question. Every single time.

United by a million miles. England are a shitshow that keeps on shitting.
I have a slight hope that United can return to glory

Had this discussion in my shop with a lot of customers this week so I’m genuinely interested to know on here who people care more about between United and England ?

For me it’s always United over England and outside of Italia 90 and Euro 96 it’s not even been anywhere near questioning, I’ve had people in this week that support all kinds of teams and it’s probably been around 50/50 so far.

United all the way

Nothing could surpass England winning the World Cup

As long as our current mayor is in charge, that statement is thrown out the window until further notice. Have you seen the rules pubs need to follow during the euro's? The whole city centre feels like a dead wasteland

United CL
United League
England World Cup
England Euros
United FA Cup
United Europa
United League Cup

Probably my order. Pre 2013 you’d have swapped the PL for England World Cup.

Always United first, England just fill in the summer until the PL starts again.

English football is very tribalistic, so this is probably a fairly unique thing to Engand.

I'd imagine lesser teams root for the NT a lot more because it's nice to support a team capable of winning things.

As my point of view, “small club” supporters in England tend to choose the country over the club. Contrary, big club supporters with the big ego, they couldn’t enjoy the rival players play for their team. I could see the flags, it’s all about the championship team supporters. It’s a bit weird to me, in my country, National team is the best, no matter where u come from, we love all of them when they play for national team.

So you'd have chosen England to win this Euro's ahead of all of United's trophies post Fergie? :o

I'm not particularly patriotic (don't give much of a shite for 'Team GB' at sports I don't care about at the Olympics, etc) so I appreciate most people will support their national teams more than I do - but I'm still always surprised when I hear people would rather their national team (often made up more of players from 'rival teams') win things more than the club side they support day in, day out.

it's hard to say. I get nervy watching both teams.
With United it's "edge of your seat, nailbiting, raging at the ref" nerves
with England it's "can't watch - want to just fastforward time so i don't have to live through it" nerves

This is both in big games btw.

Utd every time. England have the pick of the players and still can’t win a trophy and I have become apathetic to them now.

Well, yeah. But also…. Offer any team in the land a Leicester season and they’re sacking off England.

Ironically, the 72+ support their clubs to a far higher degree than most of the upper 20.

I am not English so United over England every day of the week. :)

BUT of course it is country over club. It is not even a contest.

I haven't, what are they?

No screens allowed outside of the pubs doors, no bigger than 55 inch inside, terraces need to be blocked off so you can't peek inside. It's a mess.

Read up on it since your last post. Fecking grim. Surely Groningen with their kakstudenten population can put a screen on de grote markt.

Utd 99 times out of a 100.

Come from a family with a Scottish Dad and English Mum, always felt British never English. Don't want to see England do bad but it's a feckin toil on on your sanity watching England at times tbf

I think so. However the FA Cup this year, beating city in the final was really fecking nice.

i have mates (we all live in manchester) that support Arsenal, Villa, City, Spurs and then some smaller teams like Bury, Rochdale, Stockport etc.

It is nice all be able to support the same team instead of ripping eachother when the international tournaments come around

Ipswich staying up over England winning the Euros. And to be honest it’s not even a difficult decision.
I’d really like England to do well, but Ipswich is in my heart, it goes much deeper. And as others have said, the stupid, jingoistic, ten German bombers crap just leaves me absolutely cold. I’m embarrassed by association.

The older I get the less I'm arsed with the England team. Got little in common with the average match going england fan. Don't like the songs they sing or the way they generally conduct themselves abroad.
I'd rather United players didn't get picked for England but I want them to do well when they do.

Also, what proportion of England matches are you genuinely emotionally invested in? Friendlies, not a chance. Nations league, nope. Even tournament qualification feels like a foregone conclusion. So really it’s a 4 to 6 (if we’re lucky) match spell over the course of 3 weeks, once every two years. Club football has genuine jeopardy, once or twice a week for nine months of the year. I can’t see how club football doesn’t win for every fan.

I think Ireland were in a situation where losing a game would have been a better result in terms of getting a play off spot than winning at one point. It really doesn't make any sense. Not that it would have made any difference anyway, we have no hope of qualifying for anything anytime sòon.
