Had this discussion in my shop with a lot of customers this week so I’m genuinely interested to know on here who people care more about between United and England ?

For me it’s always United over England and outside of Italia 90 and Euro 96 it’s not even been anywhere near questioning, I’ve had people in this week that support all kinds of teams and it’s probably been around 50/50 so far.

It’s not even close. United by a long way.

Wrong team ofcourse, but I've always been a Holland over Feyenoord person.

I do feel England really sort of hate/love their national team.

I'm patriotic, and will always support England regardless of whose in the squad (Gerrard and Owen was a test! haha), but United is in my heart and will always come first.

It’s because of the fan base.

United over everyone.

I always thought a lot of United and Liverpool fans were different from a lot of other clubs in that regard- I think Carragher stated that when he missed a penalty for England he thought 'At least it wasn't Liverpool' . And of course United have the history of Beckham, Neville, Rooney and Ronaldo all getting blamed for England's numerous failures so a lot of our fans seem to have a 'feck England' attitude.

I think when I was a kid and didn't have Sky to watch United week in week out, I was maybe more into England but nowadays, a big part of me even feels more joy from seeing United players do well, to the extent that even if Hojlund had scored against us today, I would've kind of been happy

If you had to choose United winning the Champions League in 2 years time or England winning the next World Cup what would you choose? This should settle the 50/50ies.

I’d happily never see England win a single tournament if it meant United won the league again.
In fact I’d take another FA cup win like the other week over a World Cup.

England World Cup I’ve seen United win the champions league I was 6 in 1966 so I can’t really remember the World Cup final

United, and it’s not even close. Struggle to even support England when there are no United players involved, like today.

I struggle to care about most international football tbh. I think there’s far, far too much of it played, and much of it could be scrapped ie pointless mid-season friendlies, qualifiers against teams like San Marino, and the entire Nations League

i care more about United than Ireland. That’s mostly because Ireland have been largely uninspiring for years. I’d love to see them do well but when they’re effectively out of the running for tournament qualification after a few games it becomes a moot point.

I was spoiled with the teams of the early 90s. Even seeing that it was 30 years since Houghton got the winner against Italy in USA 94. Or Lineker saying her never won any of his opening matches in the four tournaments he played at, and two of those games were against Ireland. It seems a world away from the current squad levels.

100% United for me.
International football is good to watch from a pretty neutral point of view, but I don't 'support' any of the nations, including England.

'Cheering on' England is often difficult for me as they're usually full of rival players who I just have negative associations towards from supporting United. Today, for instance, not one minute for a United player while I'm watching players from City, Liverpool, Arsenal, etc, instead.

Meanwhile, Denmark have two current United players in their starting line up! Watching that game, I was more eager to see Hojlund and Eriksen do well than the likes of Kane, Foden, Saka, etc.

Sliding scale.

I hate the jingoistic bullshit around the England team. So United > England. No question.

But the scale?

United PL > England anything
United CL > England barren for another 4 tourneys.

Overlap point would be;

United 3 PL’s or United 2 PL’s and England a major trophy, I’ll take the latter. Unless it was under the Tories.

Really irrationally love the National team. But it’s nuanced and qualified.

I'd choose United winning a league game over England winning the WC.

Way back in the 80s I went to a couple of tournaments with England used to get quite a few united lads following Robson was Englands best player and very popular it was only when united started to play in Europe regularly united fans stopped going it was the London media that whipped up the anti United shit

I'd care about England if they had any capacity to be good. But I watch United even when they're shite so no contest

I would take United winning another FA cup over england winning anything haha

United when they are playing and England when they are playing.

I don’t care for international breaks though. I rather we took them away and then had the domestic season say September to April and then international season in mid-May to mid-July. Years with no tournaments can be qualification years.

United easily. This year easier as we have no one in the team :(
I always get swept up with England at major tournaments though.

My love for united runs deeply where as england its hardly even there tbh. I get nervous watching united in a league cup game vs charlton whereas england only really ever get nervous in a final or semi like world cup 2018

United, always. But I'd love to experience England winning something

United. I’m Indian. And I’d take United over India winning in cricket.

No contest whatsoever.

I'd chose United winning anything - the EL, ECL, FA Cup, League Cup, FA Youth Cup - ahead of caring about whether England win the World Cup.

That's 90% because I only support United and so only get that level of delight about seeing us win things. But a small part of it is that I generally prefer neutrality and emotional distance with other things non-United related - so generally prefer the international tournaments when it's about foreign nations rather than the constant bias and jingoism towards any of the home nations that you get when they're still in / doing well.

I’d rather Utd win the league cup than England win the World Cup. With England I’ll jump on the bandwagon but it’s nowhere near the passion I have for Utd .

United all the way.
Totally agree with the too much International football sentiment, holding up the whole league for games against The Faroe Islands and their ilk is ridiculous
All competitions should be like the FA Cup, straight knockouts.

In the end - how many people continue to spend time on a forum like this or talking to their mates about the national teams vs talking about the club they support? Exactly. No one cares much about natl footie anymore as soon as a tourney is over.

International tournaments are the rare occassion where you can really feel a sense of unity everywhere you go. I love it. And I also prefer Holland over Feyenoord! :smirk:

It doesn’t really count when United supporting England ‘fans’ admit they don’t really care about the national team. I’m not that old and already seen United win everything multiple times over, I really want to see England win something.

United by a huge distance. I was even willing Hojlund to score today. I feel even less for England than usual with us having no United players out there and bloody Southgate in charge.

I still want England to win, but I don't want to see Fil Phoden and pals doing well, so it's a conundrum.
