United aiming to sell Harry Maguire next summer according to Jamie Jackson

Has retaining value by handing out contract extensions ever worked for us?

All it ever does is mean we're stuck with a player we don't want for another year or two.

I don’t think we've ever extended someone with the actual intent on selling them though? If we actual want rid of him extending and selling for like £10m would make sense. Better then nothing...but it would also involve a level of competence from the club that I'm still not sure exists.

I presume he doesn't want to go and no one wants him, so he will be quietly released in June.

Was he in the last WC squad? Cannot remember.
Don’t think he was. Been un heard of for about 7 years.

The annoying thing is that you know he'll look half decent in that kind of set up and we'll have idiots knocking the club for not getting the best out of him and all that nonsense.

yea true. Put him in a team that just parks the bus all the time and he will look good. Just clearing the ball anywhere holding on to a one nil lead.

Absolute comical in an attacking team. Mistake after mistake last night. Like he was a pub player.

Nice. Publicise it right now so we don’t look desperate at all.

I think it might push clubs that he'd be a relative coup for to go for him in January. Like a West Ham or a Villa, instead of waiting till there might be more around the table in summer. Especially if he has a decent World Cup.

From the same Jamie Jackson who said had Eriksen rejected us last summer.

Tbf, looks fairly obvious that we'll sell Maguire. I think for his own career, he'll look to move on. Wouldn't be surprised if Fred got a new contract and was kept as a squaddie.

Didn’t we do that with Evra? He was pissed at Woodward for a while because of it

I don't doubt that ten Hag wants to get rid but Maguire will be a hard sell. We'll have to take a serious hit on the transfer fee and his wages won't make it easy to move him on either. Only just realised we signed Maguire on a 6+1 year deal as well when he came, what a mental signing it was on every count.

Good. Hope we can get at least 30m. He will be 30y.o. come summer but should still be worth quite a bit to some mid table team.

It's a pretty safe bet no doubt but take early transfer window predictions with a huge pinch of salt. They didn't have a clue we were going to sign Casemiro, Eriksen and Martinez last summer, all the stories were about other players.

Aye, I'm not really in the loop for who's reliable etc. when it comes to transfer news. I take them all with a huge pinch of salt, but the Maguire story just seems obvious, anyway.

Is Fred on silly wages though? Just think he could be sold relatively easily for a small fee. That said, no issue with him going for free.

Phil jones is somehow still at the club. Why no mention of selling him?

Because he's not on the huge money Maguire is, didn't cost 80m, isn't captain and most importantly expires in the summer, and there's not a chance he walks away from his last decent contract.

Yeah we got £1.5m out of it. I think the issue was Evra saying he wanted to leave, Woodward said no problem, we'll let you go on a free. Woodward then triggered the contract extension and that delayed things for Evra. If the extension was the agreed plan all along with a sale, I doubt Evra would have been pissed off.

I do wonder how much of this is true and also, who would actually buy him. That's not being disrespectful but his form hasn't been great for over a year and I wonder what kind of fee we'd be looking for.

Still, if it is true it'll be good for us and good for him to get his career back on track. Win-win.

The Varane and Martinez partnership was the final blow for Maguire, he has had his chance to get back in to the team but he's not on the same level as that pair.

Can only hope he has a trouble free world cup and gets an offer from someone in Janruary.

If he can control his hooligan English instincts and behaviour off shore then a move to serie A makes a lot sense. I’m sure Jose would love him at Roma.

Just read the article and couldn't help but wonder which snake at the club called up Jamie Jackson with this story.

The loss we are about to receive in terms of what we spent & what we’ll get will be interesting to see.

I think we gave him false promises/Woodward lied to him or something... Can't remember.

As long as we're up front with Fred about our intentions I don't think it's bad practice

Sell for what you can get and continue to look forward and plan ahead for EtH. Maguire couldn't make the big step up after the Euros and his limitations continued to get exposed after that. It dragged the team down.

Pretty sure that's what happened with Pogba or at least why he somehow thought he was hard done by.

Personally, I think it's stupid for players to complain clubs are taking up the option to preserve their investment when they themselves are looking to run down their contracts and collect the bag.

Extending his contract so we can sell him for 10m rather than him getting a nice juicy signing on bonus somewhere else, I’m sure he will be thrilled

Sensible. I'd try sell him in January, hopefully after a strong world cup just because sitting on the bench for 6 months wont help anyone.

"Ten Hag admires Maguire's professionalism."

"Ten Hag has been impressed by Fred's application and team ethic."

Reading between the lines Jamie Jackson wants to say Ten Hag thinks Maguire and Fred are just shit at football

Will he want to leave? If not, will he?

Leicester might be an option for him?

Who knows if he wants to leave? I suspect he'll want to keep receiving the same amount of money, but he won't want to be 4th choice, so a move is going to involve some wages being covered.

I doubt Leicester are interested. They don't play exclusively low block counter attacking football under Rodgers, which is the only thing Maguire is suited to. The problem for us is that there aren't a lot of clubs with money that play that way, and even if there is one big club that does they know their only competition is smaller clubs, so there's no pressure to offer a big fee.

Letting an £80m signing go for what will presumably be peanuts (comparatively) will be a big sign the board is fully behind Ten Hag.

We've spent big under all our managers, but contract renewals have always shown they value player value over creating the right culture and quality.
