UEFA Champions League Matchday 1 fixtures (18th - 19th Sep 2018) | Kick off @ 17:55 and 20:00 BST

We really looked incredible tonight.
At times we did, until we decided to take the piss(last 20 minutes)

Still, Roma right now are not a good test. Can't defend for shit, only their goalkeeper, De Rossi and Dzeko showed up for them, rest were crapped their pants as soon as they saw the Bernabeu

Disagree. Our weakest link was our mentality at times, just taking the piss. Most of the chances they had were down to stupid, lazy mistakes from us.
Erm, okay. True we looked a bit arrogant at times in attack but I meant our worst player tonight of course.

By the way, you are always so harsh on how you view our games and some players. Try to enjoy it sometimes too, man! We looked fantastic tonight.

BBC just quoted an ‘unwanted’ stat for city:

First 3 successive home defeats in Europe in their history

This is only their 8th Champions League for Christ sake, we’re not talking European royalty here. Arrogance from City is astonishing, love the fact they lost.

They are a pathetic club, they would love to wipe all football history before 8 years ago.

The highlights just came on and the commentator said " the champions league favourites lose at home"

How the hell are they favourites ?

I think Benzema was our worst player, that said, "worst" tonight means a 7. For 70 minutes we absolutely humiliated them. Just need to fine tune our finishing

They're also the first English team to lose 4 CL games in a row.

Thanks. Would you want him as a first XI player or do you think he doesn't have enough quality?

He's a good player but doesn't do it versus big teams. For me he's behind KDB and both Silva's so 4th choice for our midfield roles. On tonights showing I'd be tempted to give Foden his spot next time out. It's no coincidence soon as he went off we looked a lot lot better.

How have you been doing this season without Ronaldo ? And how is Courtois getting on ? I haven't been following to be honest.

Shame Valencia couldn't manage a draw.

Why ? Perfect result for us is for Juve to win the rest of matches so that we settle the first and second position with them in the games between us. We want Valencia to lose both games against Juve.

Heh, we're definitely missing his presence in the box, but we're doing well enough. Still adapting. First game were we started with our best XI and we looked unplayable, though Roma made it easy

4 CL defeats in a row, 3 of them at home.

We looked better when we got Gundogan and Jesus off the pitch, but Fernandinho, Laporte and Delph all put in 1/10 performances as well. Fern and Gundogan need to take a long hard look at themselves, Fern is guaranteed to play because he's only only holding mid, but after tonight Gundo has clearly made himself 4th choice.

Also credit to Lyon, they just wanted it a whole lot more than us.

Who would have thought that the almighty Premier league champs City would be beaten by not even the best team from a farmer's league?

Didn’t watch the game but apparently it was a big night for Renato Sanches who put a MOTM performance away at Benfica.

Hopefully this is the start of him getting back to fulfilling his potential.

"Real Madrid today beat a record held by Tottenham, who went 42 European games between 1961 and 1984 without failing to score at White Hart Lane, a run that was also eventually broken by Real Madrid in a 1-0 victory in London in 1985."

Guess it was their only European record. Poor lads.

Am I wrong in my assumption that Madrid players actually look more happy and relaxed now that Ronaldo is gone ?

Optimism. If Juve and Valencia drew both matches and we best Valencia we have a better chance at first.

The lineup was pretty surprising as until now Thiago and Müller have been the ones that always made the starting formation and until now really were top. But Thiago had problems with his toes and that is why he had to play James and behind him Martinez. And he wanted to give Sanches the chance at home. Bayern did not have the organization and pressing of the last weeks in which the opponents did not even come to shots - but Benfica was pretty harmless and they had a too open defense what made it pretty easy for the offensives and if Robben did not waste 3 big chances it could have been more goals.

Sanches played very well - especially after the last two years he had. Looks differently now than he looked in that time, too. He will not be a regular in the starting formation - for this the competition for the midfield spots at Bayern is just too big - but with 2 matches a week in the next weeks will get his time. And Schalke will be glad to see Thiago and Müller again on the weekend...:D

I hate to say this as it makes me look bitter towards Ronaldo but we're looking better in our last few games (bar vs Athletic) than we have in a long time. Ronaldo is a fantastic player but everyone in attack has to play in service of him, which was detrimental to the team sometimes.

Didn't have a chance to see the other games since I was of course watching United Young Boys.

But just looking at those Madrid game statistics it does seem like the absolutely dominated Roma. And their 3 goals were just nasty. It seems the road to Madrid, goes through Madrid after all.

Going by the stats for distance covered Liverpool had it very easy vs PSG - the laziest team in the first round with just 101 km distance covered. Shocking (non-)effort. Some non-big teams have run a lot: Benfica and Lyon 115 km, Hoffenheim 114 km. Young Boys - 108 km.

Madrid covered 105 kms, Roma 110 but were beaten so easily. Distance covered is a good stat but doesn't tell much. PSG were 1 kick away from getting very good result away from home.

Didn't watch Madrid and Roma. The point isn't that running a lot is a sufficient condition for peforming well but it is normally a necessary condition vs good teams, unless you are lucky. PSG looked lethargic and the stats prove it. They have some exceptional players but the effort wasn't sufficient and they did not deserve to get something from that game. Liverpool themselves didn't run much, maybe because they did not need to. Lyon might be mediocre but running 115 km helped them stop City, I guess.

Btw, Madrid wouldn't get away with 105 km distance covered vs Liverpool, not a chance.

The usual EPL fans bs. Madrid wouldn't this, Madrid wouldn't that and then Madrid goes on to win it season after season after season. At some point you should learn.

There is only one winner in the Champions league. The rest are just here fore the show.

Madrid can run a lot when necessary. Last season they covered over 110 km vs Bayern at home and over 115 km (!) vs Juve at home.

Liverpool will make any team run a lot, but I think the key to Real Madrid success is their midfield. They rarely looked like they have control in big games under Zidane but they could always go a gear up when it was needed.

Let's see how they cope without Ronaldo in the knock-out stages. They don't need him in the group stage anyway.

We would if liverpool run for 107 km...

Running is how technically inferior teams close the gap. It's all relative.

How many kms did liverpool cover against PSG?

"Running is for animals. For football you need a brain and a ball". You all know who said that

Agreed. But they would run a lot more imo, especially at Anfield where they ran 120 km vs City in the CL.
