UEFA Champions League 18/19 Matchday 5 fixtures (27th - 28th November 2018)

All this time people have been saying Liverpool had to win their last game 2-0 if they lost against PSG?

So Liverpool are fine with a 1-0?

Liverpool beat Napoli 1-0 and they get through. But that is providing PSG win.

Here's another random head scratcher

If Liverpool beat Napoli 1-0 and PSG draw in Belgrade they will all be on 9 points.

PSG will have beaten Liverpool on away goals h2h, Napoli beaten PSG away goals h2h, yet Napoli and Liverpool will dead even. If you're taking h2h's before GD, surely Liverpool would go out in this scenario?
This is really interesting.

Any great mathematician can work out for us?

I have a headache now.

Think Liverpool and Spurs have fine chances. Barca have certainly looked beatable in many of their matches and were honestly lucky to beat PSV. Spurs just need to show up like every other team that has done that have faired well against Barca and press them in defense because the Barcelona midfield isn't very quick this year and they don't defend well.

Napoli I don't know. You can't really expect a team to just beat them by two goals or get the favorable result of 1-0. They've only lost 2 matches so far in the season and both their away matches in the CL were draws. Liverpool do just sometimes turn on and they are a lot better at home than away in Europe. Personally I wouldn't bet on either Liverpool or Spurs to go through but it's close.

Yep, Spurs and Pochettino will believe they can do it, which is half the battle. So we just might go there and win … you never know.

A lot will depend on how much Barca want to put into the game.
+ They have currently just 13 fit first team players.

But Barca have lost just 1 CL home game in the last 9 years (0-3 against Bayern Munich).

Spurs got DESTROYED by Barca a month ago. They also weren't playing Arthur today who has been on of their best midfielders on the season.

The only reason Spurs have any sort of prayer is Barca may not field a full XI since they have the group wrapped. Tottenham have looked like junk in CL this season.

Surely with that tag you've watched Barcelona this season? They were lucky to secure their qualification tonight against PSV who could have scored 5.

Key word here is month ago. Spurs weren't in form, they're in form now. Barca have been the worse side on the pitch for 4 of the last 5 matches and have only gotten points because of a few superior individuals and the fact that their opposition didn't put away their chances like they did.

They were better than Atletico but I agree that they weren’t promising today. Having said that 5 is a massive exaggeration and Vidal had two shots saved on the goal line that would’ve killed the game off much earlier. Tottenham struggles just as much against PSV.

Spurs beat Chelsea but hardly looked like world beaters against Inter.

Again, Barca should be resting players but Tottenham are very poor away from home, had Barca not had the group wrapped up I’d expect another drubbing.

I don’t think Barca have been amazing lately but I’m not sold on Tottenham all of a sudden being a force to be reckoned with. Their defense is as bad as Barca’s, although Barca having Umtiti and Arthur back will Ben huge. They also really get up for thumping EPL teams but do suffer from complacency this season.

Did you see the players we were missing vs Barca?

Our form has improved since then .. we were trash at first but have got better. Regardless, winning at the Nou Camp is a big ask but hopefully the fact we need a win and Barca don't will give us an edge.

That’s true, and best of luck in that match. You guys looked great against Chelsea

Don't think we'll beat Barcelona away, though it's not impossible I guess, especially if they decide to rest some players.

They did handily beat us before but we were missing a few and our form was quite a bit worse then.

Realistically, we shouldn't be in this situation at all as we should have picked up 6 points from the games vs Inter and PSV. It still annoys that we didn't. Oh well.

Would be handy if PSV could do us a favour too!

Yes. The SSN pundits thought we'd struggle as Valencia had spent big

Youll find plenty of videos online of popular football channels saying this.

Fair enough. Could you post some of these? This is a genuine request as I don't watch SSN or any kind of pre or post match stuff tbh. I only go by what I see myself, conversations etc.

In my head, seemed a bit like the top 4 stuff. Seems mostly Man Utd fans in that thread who are proclaiming Man utd out of the race and fans of other clubs who are mostly saying we're literally a third of the way into the season.

I'm still confused, what decides who goes through between Inter and Tottenham if they are equal on points?

Ref decisions in the CL game we just watched ? What the feck has all that got to do with it? But outside of this game and this CL thread yeah.

They should have owned Liverpool..... the Liverpool pen was a pen, dumb excuse for a club who was spent the money they have spent. Absolutely no excuse.

Pretty sure it's decided by a 3 way table of results between the 3 teams. In effect just removing all of Red Star's results. If that's the case then it would look like....

Liverpool 2-0-2 6 points
Napoli 1-2-1 5 points
Psg 1-2-1 5 points

Then as CA1 said, Napoli would top Psg on away goals in their head to heads.

Not 100% but I'm sure that's how it's done.

PSG would go through ahead of Napoli on goals scored in the mini league 7 vs 4

For all of how well he's done in the league for them, thought Van Dijk was poor last night. Poor on the first goal. Should probably have conceded a penalty on Neymar and generally looked uncomfortable.

In short a very good defender but not a world class one.

Yep, if Napoli hadn't conceded yesterday they would have gone through even with a 1-0 defeat.
Napoli will go into the game with a better mind set knowing that if they conceed one goal , they are out. So Anceloti will go in the game setting up as normal. Had they had the cushion of Liverpool needing 2 goals, then it changes the mentality of the team and manager and it changes how they would play there normal game.

Yeah, Ancelotti is too experienced to let this one slip under his nose.

No they are not  Spurs have the best away record in the PL. If you are talking CL, Spurs was the better team in PSV and Milan, you could say it was very bad luck that they only got one point, they were minutes away from 6 points.

I actually fancy Spurs to win in Barca, Poch will win at the home of his arch rivals.

90minfootball, Ballstreet and ESPN all made videos a few months ago saying that United were in a group of death due to Valencia being good last season and strengthening. I watch most decent sized football channels and all of them had our group as one of the toughest. There was also a consensus that Liverpool were the best team in their group and would be first comfortably.

Van Djik swept Neymar off his feet in the box and then was acting as if Neymar went down without contact, and asking him to get up, was ridiculous.
And Carragher expressing shock at how the players faces the family after diving on pitch is hilarious. Pep's Barca and Spain made it an art form more than a decade ago. Was he sleeping?

Hmm … not a very promising stat from Spurs' point of view.

I watch some of those channels and I thought they all had Spurs in the worst group?

No. There was a consensus that the tough groups were Liverpool, Spurs and United's with disagreement on who had it worse. I believe Craig Burley said he expected United to get knocked into Europa. My opinion at the time was that Liverpool had the most difficult group with Spurs and United a toss-up. I still hold that opinion currently.

Barca's home record doesn't mean much in a meaningless game against a very good Spurs team. Anyone expecting a top performance from Barca is unrealistic. Barca lost recently a more important game 4:3 (Betis?). Spurs stand a chance.

But they haven't lost such a "meaningless game" (Game on Matchday 6) since December 2008.

Barca always wrap up group before last game, still they always win their home gamea.

Obviously Spurs stand a chance, just like any other club playing against any team, just that Barca are very much favourites to win their home game, especially in CL.

Maybe because (1) they weren't guaranteed to finish 1st no matter what or (2) the last game wasn't against strong opposition or (3) they didn't have an oldish squad and could play a strong team, etc.

Inter are a way more challenging team than Valencia. Our group doesn't really compare to the other two. It's tricky of course, but not difficult and our current position is par for the course.

Thats not the way I look at these games. I look at the fixtures and how they would pan out. I had our group as a battle between United and Valencia. This was a largely accurate prediction as we got by the skin of our teeth against Juventus and they missed a lot of chances to kill the game. We were very close to having to win away at Valencia.

I would see Spurs group as the same thing. It is basically a battle between Inter and Spurs for who finishes second. Liverpool obviously had the most difficult group as it was a toss-up between 3 teams with no clear favourite.

If Spurs finished 3rd place behind Inter, I would consider that under par, largely because they should be dispatching PSV home and a way which they didnt. Inter being a tough opponent hasn't been their undoing, they won at home and lost away. That's very expected.
