UCL Round of 16 - First Legs - Feb 18 - 26

Drogba's spell at Chelsea is one of the most over rated things in football.

I agree, apart from winning the golden boot twice 3 premier leagues 3 fa cups 2 league cups and a champions league including dragging us through the semi and final of that competition and scoring the final penalty kick he was a bit of a let down.

Absolutely, Drogba let himself down against every top opposition in the past decade.

One day it would turn out like this. You can't have a handful of clubs capable of churning out 30m+ for every little gap on their bench and not have serious consequences on the competitiveness of the competition. This may the biggest result, but let's not forget that it will be at the very least 6 out of 8 away wins in the final 16. If Chelsea gets a winner, we have only Manchester United as a group winner not winning the first tie, and this is due to a very exceptional situation at the club right now.

The most boring ever set of second-legs of the Champions League awaits next.
The flip side of this is the quarters and beyond will be epic. Only the Olympiakos tie will be a bit shit as whoever they play should thrash them.

How exactly?

His goalscoring record was average for a leading striker at a top top team. He had 2/8 prolific years, the rest he was massively inconsistent and the general theme of his season was to always score against Arsenal and dive about a bit.
Yeah he more or less carried them to the Champions League in 2012, but it masks what was generally nothing more than a "good spell" at the club.

They might play Galatasaray

opponents to the semi's in the past 3 years, Lyon, Spurs, Apoel, CSKA, Galatasaray and us and before that 6 years in a row of going out in the 2nd round. Awful record.

Could be a bit different this year. defence not tested tonight but their attack is the best in europe I think. Agree bayern overall a better team just about.

Why didn't we go for Ancelotti?
Le Parisien reported in May we'd offered him the job and he turned it down, and Sky Italy also reported this the other day for some reason. He did deny it of course, although I suppose we could have asked him to respect our position. I don't buy it personally.

Everybody is so impressed by Madrid tearing Schalke apart, but the reality is that those 2 clubs operate on different planets. I wonder what the respective squads of Schalke v Madrid costs?

Yeah in football you get the odd upset (Olympiacos :nervous:) or teams going through transitions/rough patches (us ATM). I'm not downplaying Madrid at all. They're much better then us ATM & deservedly favorites along with Bayern etc, but Schalke's not really a fair measure for these guys, especially with Ancelotti getting them to gel :nervous:.

You need to put it into context & well probably see some much closer matches when Europe's 5/6 forms teams meet one another. (Bayern PSG Barca Madrid & possibly Dortmund/A Madrid).

Anyway, forget it, all these United struggles is probably just making me bitter

Average? 1 in 2 is hardly average. If so, Rooney and RvP must be fairly average too.

He was a great player for them and their main striker throughout a period where they won a load of trophies.

Don't be so touchy, I said over rated, that's all.

He was hit and miss(mostly miss) his first two seasons. He had a great year in 2007 and when you won the league in 2010 but generally his form was up and down. It gets ignored because of the CL run and his knack for scoring lots of goals against Arsenal.
His record against us was pretty shit for instance, like 3 goals(one well offside) in about 20 games.
